This is a relatively irrelevant and off-topic side thought, but does anybody know if Palin's accent is typical of Alaskans? It has a very midwestern sound to it. She sounds like Bobby Generic's mom!

In the end, I would imagine exactly 0.2 percent of the eighteen million who were going for Hillary are going for a pro-life pro-gun person.

It may, however, excite some female conservatives who would not have otherwise been motivated to get out and vote. But how many of those are there?

In the final analysis a television commercial is successful if people who previously would not have bought the product, buy the product. It's nice to win awards, it's cool to know people are entertained by your work, but the bottom line is the bottom line: is the commercial generating sales?

Likewise, in my humble opinion, McCain will be judged to have succeeded or failed with his VEEP selection based upon how many additional votes he receives in November than he otherwise would have without Governor Palin on the ticket. The case has been made that Palin helps to draw in the more conservative segments of the Republican Party who were, at best, lukewarm to the McCain campaign. For historical reference this compares to Dole's selection of Jack Kemp in 1996. But the real wildcard here is the female vote in general, and the disenfranchised Senator Clinton voters in particular. And before you dismiss that number as small or trifling, consider the following quote:
Originally posted by former vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro
"For 24 years I've been saying, 'It's great to be the first, but y'know, I don't want to be the only. And so now it is wonderful to see a woman on a national ticket."

Ferraro defended Palin from charges that the Alaska governor doesn't have enough foreign policy experience.

"What she doesn't know she will learn very quickly, she seems smart enough," Ferraro said.

As for whom Ferraro will vote the former congresswoman from Queens, N.Y., said, "I'm like one of you people, I'm sitting here working on my, on my decision. Y'know I'm a Democrat and I am a person who feels very strongly about issues that are facing this country so when I go into the booth I will make my decision."

If a lifelong Democrat and prominent office holder (who, to my knowledge, has never been labeled a "Conservative") is considering voting for McCain, I think it's fair to conclude that there are many, many other Senator Clinton supporters who will not just consider voting for McCain, but who will actually pull the lever for the Arizona Senator.

The complete article containing Ms. Ferraro's comments may be found here (blogs.abcnews.com)

Hey, part of being pro-choice is that you can be happy when someone chooses to have a baby, too (as Gov. Palin did in the case of her youngest, for example). Going after personal issues is often swinging at a pitch at the dirt, for effectiveness.

Me, I think that McCain having to pick Sarah Palin out of near-obscurity to shore up his conservative base is awesome. Her story may be interesting to tell, but in the end her extreme-right views are less appealing to the moderate swing voters that pay any attention. And what the selection says about John McCain. (Besides being a rash "politics first" electoral decision that shows off his maverickiness in the bad sense, it says that he was losing his base to the degree that he couldn't make a bold play at the centrist voters that will decide the election.)

Only rumors of course, but I think McCain's original instinct of Joe Lieberman was the potential game changer - making the evangelicals happy really only reinforces that McCain's campaign path to victory involves having to defend the razor-thin Bush '04 electoral map.

Do you think a 17 actually CHOSE to have a baby? Maybe they chose to have unprotected sex, not procreation.

No way the 17-year old and Buddy no-name get married. Election day they will still be "planning to get married." Whichever way the election goes, afterward there will be, at most, a very low-key announcement that they aren't, but probably it'll just fade away. I am literally willing to bet money with anyone else here on this.

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to come off as snark or spin - I'm just trying to say that as someone who supports a woman's right to choose, I can certainly respect a decision to carry a child to term and raise it under less than optimal circumstances.

That said, I imagine you're right that the 'choice' in this case was (a) "Get married and have the baby." or (b) "I have friends that send people to Guantanamo Bay, you know." (Now there's snark )

And those are some awfully proud parents, considering. (But what else can they say to a nation just getting introduced to the family?) As Sen. Obama pointed out (again), there's no reason to go after families. Even the mob doesn't go after families. Besides, there are a half-dozen legitimate issues that have popped up now that the vetting process has begun in earnest.

But I'm with Zed on the marriage, it may not last 5 years, but it's sooo happening. Regardless of the outcome in November, Gov. Palin will have a political career to consider.

The choice was to have the baby, rather than to abort. The daughter could have aborted, without her parent's permission. That is the choice she made. Not to get pregnant, but what to do after the baby existed.

and I also believe they will get married. I also would guess it won't happen until after the baby is born. That is, today, what I have seen after children have made errors in judgment in Christian communities and got pregnant - the baby is born, the children grown a bit more (because, they are clearly both still children), and then marry.

It's always tricky when kids make babies.

I think a lot of the stuff on Kos trying to spin conspiracy theories about the parentage of Palin children is ridiculous and unnecessary, and that personal decisions like this are not really fodder for the campaign.

However, for someone like Sarah Palin, whose life story and family is such a part of her resume and why McCain chose her and how she was presented to the public, I do not think it out of line to question her on how these events either lend credence or cause questions about her opinions that she would push onto other people. I don't think it is out of line to ask someone who is a very strong proponent of abstinence-only education what lessons she might have learned from the obvious failing of such a plan in her own family's experience.

What has happened in the life of Bristol Palin is her own business, and shouldn't matter to any of us. What lessons or knowledge Sarah Palin may have taken from this situation is in play, and should be fully examined, as her policies and the policies of her ticket and her party have the potential to impact millions of children who face the same struggles and same choices as Bristol Palin did.

She's 17, and lives in Alaska. This is NOT news.

I feel very bad for her. No 17 year old should EVER be up for the scrutiny of the entire nation, especially not while pregnant.

FWLIW, the speculation has begun to swirl that this may end up being an out for McCain to remove her from the ticket. It wouldn't be the worst idea for him. He needed someone the GOP base would like at the convention to avoid an embarassing scene, but after that, if she were to leave he could go for a choice of someone like Lieberman and not have to worry about facing a crowd of angry delegates/party members. I doubt it would happen, but if someone gave me ten to one, I might lay down $20.

I dont think his VP choice was a good one, but I think it looks even worse for him to dump her now (she's gonna be a grandma for crying out loud!), especially not with the Rep convention happening this week. Maybe if she was already picked and the convention was still a few weeks out, but not now.

I really doubt he's going to remove her. Sarah Palin is a play for fundamentalist voters, especially funadmentalist female voters. I have no idea how many funadmentalist women vote on a regular basis, but I guarentee that many more than normal are going to turn out to vote with this ticket. If there are enough of them to offset any of the "base" that are upset at this ticket, who knows?

Honestly, I see her being a much bigger political threat in 4-8 years, but I think you're going to see some weird stuff come out of this that no one is thinking about yet. An army of "Soccer Moms for McCain/Palin" is not something *I* would want to go up against.

Give me 10-1 on anything with a pulse and I'd drop $20 on it (still not mathematically eliminated on the Braves at 10-1 for $50 yet).
I'll say the guy marries her, but for different reasons. Marriage is a no lose for the guy. Worst case is he is the son-in-law of the Governor of Alaska. That should be worth a job someplace. Best case he is son-in-law of VP, which would probably get him into a better position than he would have ever have gotten if he never knocked her up. And, should anything happen to McCain, he really would be in a position where he could set himself up for life.

EDIT: Has anyone heard the rumors that Palin's youngest daughter Trig (born April 2008) is actually the daughter of her daughter Bristol? It's such a crazy story, I sure hope it isn't true.

But they say no one had any idea that she was pregnant until she announced it a month before the baby was born. Even so, she exhibited no physical signs. At the same time, her daughter Bristol missed 4 months of school because of "mono". Here's a picture of Sarah at 7 months. There are rumors (as yet unsubstantiated) that Bristol's classmates knew she was pregnant.

And then the timeline of Trig's birth is interesting.
Here's the summary from someone else:

According to published reports. On Thursday April 17, 2008, Sarah Palin's water broke while she was attending an energy conference for the Republican Governor's Association in Texas. Instead of going directly to a hospital, knowing she was pregnant with a baby with down syndrome, she proceeded to deliver a 30 minute speech at the energy conference.

Sarah Palin apparently consulted her doctor before doing so.

After waiting hours to give her speech and then another half hour to deliver it, while in labor, Sarah Palin boarded a plane to Alaska without alerting the pilot or anyone else that she was in labor.

Sarah Palin spent the next 8 - 10 hours on a plane to Seattle and then on to Alaska, while in labor. No one else knew about it!

According to the flight attendants on the plane during Sarah Palin's flight to Alaska, there were no visible signs that the governor was either pregnant or in labor. Nor did she show any signs of distress.

After landing in Anchorage, instead of going to one of the most equipped facilities for premature births in the state, she drove 45 minutes to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center outside Wasilla, the tiny town she was once mayor of. She "delivered" Trig one month prematurely.

Sarah Palin returned to work three days later after supposedly giving birth 1 month prematurely to a baby boy with down syndrome.

Which makes today the perfect time to start the really deep, intensive vetting process (blogs.kansas.com), doesn't it? I'm not sure it's time to start drawing the Eagleton comparisons, but the Palin pick hasn't exactly been as much of a boon as it could be so far. Lotta potential with her, but also a lot of risk.
