Replay to start Thursday and Friday; Only questionable home run calls (ESPN.com)

So it starts. Better set aside about five and a half hours for those Boston/Los Angeles ALDS games.

Bright side? More time for Dane Cook commercials!!

I really don't have a problem with this as long as they implement it right and get the right call made quickly. That would be better than the neverending marathon of umps make call, manager complains, umps huddle, umps overturn call, other manager comes out to complain, other mananager comes out to see what the other manager is complaining about, and so on. That's what irritates me.

And it won't matter, we'll still get way too many ads, celebrity sightings(usually of people in crappy FOX shows I don't watch), and Dane Cook "Acktober" commercials regardless.

It's probably for the best, but I remember (and looked up the date) May 27, 1984... Cubs vs Reds in Wrigley. With two one and none out in the bottom of the 2nd, Mario Soto gives up a long moonshot to Ron Cey - right down the left field line - that lands on Waveland avenue.

The initial call was a HR.. about 30 minutes later we had:
(a) The call reversed, to foul
(b) Not before Soto got himself tossed
(c) In a full-scale brawl.

I remember it where the ball was hit, Harry Caray does his "it might be, it could be" HR call, a hesitation for someone to call it, and then "IT IS! IT IS!" when the 3B ump finally gives the homer signal. During one of the many replays (I swear to this day I saw the ball disappear behind the foul pole on its way down) the camera cut back to a live shot of Cub third base coach Don Zimmer just as he was making a break for the melee

Good times...

Yeah, I'm all for it. There are people who are against it, talking about how it takes away from the history and tradition of the game. Pittsburgh outfielder Jason Michaels for example. "Here's the thing: I guess I'm old-school, but I think human error is part of the game," Michaels said. "It's always been that way. I would think I'd be against it." Someone is always making this argument in baseball, probably because it has like 150 years of history. But I can't understand this view. Mistakes are bad. Less of them are good. I want to see the best team win, not the team that got lucky from a mistaken call. And the fact that we had to put up with those mistakes in the past isn't something in it's favor in my opinion. There are all kinds of things that we used to have to put up with before the technology existed to fix those problems.

I'll bet Jason Michaels' tune would change if he played on a team that lost a World Series game on a blown home run call.

(Of course, he plays for the Pirates, so this is something of a moot point.)

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

With Beckett going to see Dr. Andrews, TBS might be showing Tampa vs. Minnesota Battle of the Domes ALCS Games.

I totally agree. I have never understood how seeing wrong calls was supposed to be a part of baseball's charm. I would much rather see the umps get it right, even if it takes an extra minute. I think a system like college football, where there is an off-field observer that can review any play (boundary calls, including fair or foul in the field of play, catch/no catch, even bang-bang plays at the bases) would be a pretty good solution. Having the umps walk off the field to a tunnel or something could be a problem taking a lot of time. I don't really understand why they didn't wait until next April or spring training to try this out and work out any bugs, but I'm glad it's finally here.

They showed the setup in Wrigley before today's game.. the box is back in the umps' room, which looks like it would take the better part of a minute just to get to, before you put in a call to "the war room" in New York. Of course for the three-to-five times a season you may have a questionable HR call, we could live with it.

I guess they say that one ump will stay on the field, and the other *three go to discuss the review? I just have this picture in my head of Slap Shot, when the teams started a brawl before the officials had taken the ice..

The interesting part of today's game was that the Phils got hosed on a key call in the top of the 7th. Instead of the lead run scoring, and a 2-on, 2-out chance to tack on, the Cubs got out of the inning, and Soriano clubbed the decisive homer in the bottom half. It wasn't quite Don Denkinger-bad, but it was pretty darn clear that Howard beat the throw on replay.

And when it happens in a playoff game, the questions are all going to be asking why you can't fix something so obvious.

I personally think it's a stupid thing to bitch about anyway. The Cardinals bring in a ton of money to the businesses in this town. It's not like we have a lot of tourist attractions. We've got the Arch and we've got the Cardinals. That's about it.
