To me it doesn't seem all that important one way or the other who or what a guy is screwing, but the man has some serious stones or is just batshit crazy if he thought this wasn't going to come out if he were the Democratic nominee.

Well, that's just classy... trying to use his wife's battle with cancer as a way to win sympathy votes, then humps behind her back. There goes any chance of getting that VP nod with Obama.

No thanks, I'll stick with the snarky college dropouts who work for TMZ. Their bitterness just makes it that much more interesting to read and watch.
I remember when Edwards made his first presidential run, because he was a young southern politician from a non-Democratic state, people compared him to Bill Cinton. Boy, did that turn out to be accurate. What a douchebag. If he had won the nomination and this had come out, he would've cost his party the election.
How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person Im portraying. Youre confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard, and I said You are aware that I am not really a wizard? and Peter Jackson said I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show. So I said Okay and then I said to myself Mmm.. How do I do that? And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

I think he's looking more towards Attorney General. By the time that's even a consideration, this will be old news.
He only had a hope of AG if he could provide something tangible to Obama in this campaign, such as helping him carry Ohio or North Carolina. Without that sort of benefit he is utterly useless to them, and if Obama wins there is no way he puts himself out there for someone who has nothing to offer him in return.

I don't recall Reno or Ashcroft being necessary to win certain states in previous campaigns.

According to Edwards, the sex happened in 2006. His wife's cancer didn't return until March 2007.

Or is this a critique of Obama?
If Edwards had helped Obama carry a state, or at least made a state close enough to draw resources that helped Obama win another state, then he would be worth fighting for to get through a Senate confirmation hearing. If he doesn't help you, or if he repulses voters to cost you a state, why would a new president waste political capital on him?

Presumably, Barack Obama will wait until after the election to begin nominating people for presidential appointments.

This will still be a crippling blow in Jan. 2009. There are many people on Obama's list of possible AG candidates who haven't been busted cheating on their sympathetic wife. There is simply no rational reason for Obama to choose to make a stand for a guy who waited forever to endorse him, never really came out strongly for him (his public Hamlet act for weeks/months beforehand stripped a lot of the force from his endorsement), and now will basically have to sit out the rest of the campaign. If Obama wins it will be because he made inroads with the very groups Edwards theoretically would have helped him with, so at that point what could Edwards possibly have to offer that could justify giving the GOP something to go apeshit over and give the media a salacious story to sink their teeth into?
I actually don't think he was interested in the AG spot. I think he wanted a cabinet level "Poverty Czar" type position. Either way this will unfortunately hurt his chances of getting any type of appointment.
Hell, I can get you a toe by three o'clock this afternoon...with nail polish.
John McCain has admitted to having affairs (albeit decades ago) and I haven't heard it come up in this campaign. It'll blow over for Edwards, too -- maybe not by January '09, but it probably won't take too long.

The problem for Edwards on this one isn't so much the affair itself, it is that his wife was either in remission from cancer or being treated for cancer, depending on the timing of the affair. Also, it is not like Edwards has the Ted Kennedy longevity to back him up, he's a 1 term former Senator who has lost 2 Presidential Primaries and a Presidential election as a VP, with him unable to even cover the spread in his home state in the Presidential election. If Obama wins, then it is 2016 before he can look at a Presidential run again, and that is 12 years after leaving office and being surpassed by whatever rising stars occur in the next decade. Should Obama lose, tough to see the Democrats choose him in 2012 after passing over him twice before, even without the affair.
Redsox is right about why this is bad for Edwards. But I have a question. Just what states was Edwards going to help Obama win? Edwards had no and I mean no traction in the primaries.

I suspect he would have spent much of the fall in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, talking to lower-income white voters. He had a good track record of support in those groups, and might have helped to bring some of the ones who would have voted Dem for him or HRC but are now thinking of straying back into the fold. He wasn't going to carry a state by himself in the LBJ giving Kennedy Texas model (though he might have been helpful with that constituency in NC), but rather by helping Obama in swing states with important constituencies.
Edwards was pretty much a useless goof anyway (ask the Kerrys), and this gives Obama an excuse to not have to consider him.

The problem with Dean is the fact that he has moved so far to the left on the war and nationalized health care that it's going to be very hard for him to come back notwithstanding his relatively conservative positions on guns and the budget.
