Vikings. At least, according to the Packers, who have now filed tampering changers against Minnesota with the NFL. I doubt anything will come of the charges leveled against the Vikings. Darrell Bevell, the Vikings OC, was the Packers QB Coach a couple years back (and a while before that, he was the starting QB at UW). I don't think it's against league rules for him to talk to Favre. It's going to depend on exactly what he said. I suppose him saying that the Vikings were interested in Favre (or even saying that they didn't want Favre on their team) would be tampering.

Obviously Favre or Favre's agent (presumably the ones that told the Packers about it) didn't think it was tampering.

The other news I heard was that Favre's agent says he won't ask for reinstatement right away. They say they can wait up until week 6 of the season.

I guess the plan is to not give the Packers time to work out a trade. But on the flip side, that gives Favre less time to get acclimated to his new team.

On another website I was on they were talking about the possibility of the Packers inserting a poison-pill clause into the trade agreement. For example, the Packers trade Favre to Atlanta for a 5th round pick, which becomes a 2nd if Favre plays for them, and becomes two first rounders if Favre plays for a team other than Atlanta in 2008.

I don't understand. Surely if he's made the decision to retire, his contract with Green Bay would be dissolved? I'm new to the NFL, so could someone explain to me exactly what the rules are here please?

Green Bay still retains his rights for the duration of the contract. Otherwise anyone could become a free agent simply by retiring and un-retiring.

Perhaps what GB should do I trade Radgers to Miami, who desperately needs a QB to grow with, and stick with Favre for 2-3 years. Make Brohm the next QB and go from there.

If Favre leaves after this year, then GB could piss all over him for leaving after a year AND causing Radgers to be dealt. If he bombs, then they can piss on him again for losing a year with Rodgers at the hem AND losing Rodgers. But, if he succeeds and stays for 2-3 years and grooms Brohm, then all will be forgiven and he will regain all the love he may have lost in GB.

Everyone wins: Favre stays in GB, Rodgers escapes Favre's shadow and becomes a sympatheic figure and Brohm gets to learn first hand under Favre.

I'm not sure "how to throw a crippling interception late in a crucial game" is a lesson worth learning. Favre would be the man to teach it, though.

I kind of meant that tongue in cheek since it has been reported Favre never really offered to mentor Rodgers.

The latest is that the Jets have received permission to talk to Favre. It'd be nice to see the Jets have a somewhat durable quarterback. It'd also be nice to have another ancient interception machine* in the same division as the Patriots.

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard! Good luck to those down south.

Update from the home front:

* Favre has officially filed his reinstatement papers. NFL commish Roger Goodell will probably approve them Wednesday. Once done, the Pack has 24 hours to put him back on the roster, release him or trade him. If they keep him, and after passing a team physical, he can return to Packer training camp. And it'll be a ZOO.

* Jets and Chiefs were the only two teams really talking w/ Thompson about Favre. "Kicking the tires" was how Ted put it. Apparently a deal with KC was close, but the Pack insists on a 1st-rounder for Favre...deal go boom.

* Over the weekend, both Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy have reiterated that Aaron Rodgers is the starting QB for the Pack.

* Thompson still won't grant Favre his release (suck it, Vikes.)

* Fans are still torn; players are handling it just fine.

* I'm about to throw something at my TV...even if I shot that video.

Ye Gods.

And now the Packers have allegedly offered Brett oodles of $s to stay retired (sports.espn.go.com).

$20m to be precise, which I figure is in the neighborhood of what's left on his contract.

They surely can'ts be serious? Giving up a first-rounder for any guy who'll give you two years tops would be pretty nuts at the best of times and every other team knows Favre's value to the Pack (as a back-up) is pretty low. Some would argue he'd be more of a distraction than an asset.

Al Davis on a particularly nutty day might be crazy enough to bite if they didn't have Russell though.

Report: Packers consider sending Favre to division rival
ESPN.com news services

Updated: July 31, 2008, 9:27 AM ET
The Green Bay Packers, unable so far to trade Brett Favre and facing his arrival at training camp, are reportedly considering taking a step they desperately wanted to avoid: dealing him to a division rival.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing a source close to the situation, on Wednesday reported the Packers were considering seeking a deal with one of their rivals, most likely the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, if all else fails.
That follows reports that the Packers on Wednesday offered Favre a substantial sum of money -- as much as $20 million over several years -- to stay retired.
On Monday, Packers general manager Ted Thompson said the Packers would not trade Favre within the NFC North. Favre, who has asked the NFL to be reinstated, is reportedly interested in playing for the Vikings, who play the Packers to open their season on Monday Night Football on Sept. 8.
The Packers are committed to Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback of the future and are not considering Favre, who tearfully retired March 6th, returning to Green Bay as the starter.
But while the Packers continue to try to buy themselves more time to deal, Favre has yet to talk to either team.
Team president Mark Murphy traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to meet with Favre and his agent James "Bus" Cook on Wednesday, and multiple media outlets later reported that the team offered the quarterback substantial money to stay retired.
WTMJ television in Milwaukee reported that the team offered Favre in the neighborhood of $20 million over several years to stay retired. The green Bay Press-Gazette reported on its Web site that the team offered Favre "a substantial salary" to stay away. Both reports cited sources close to Favre. But signs still point to the quarterback reporting to Packers camp.
According to a source source close to Favre, said the Packers have told him they might limit him to individual drills if he shows up at training camp, the Press-Gazette reported.
Murphy left the meeting in the early evening and had no comment for reporters but issued a statement Wednesday night.
"I was in Hattiesburg today and had a nice visit with Brett Favre," the statement read. "We discussed a number of topics not related to football, including Brett's long-term relationship with the Packers. I consider our conversation to be confidential and am going to be respectful of Brett and his family and keep the details private. "[General manager] Ted [Thompson] and [coach] Mike [McCarthy] are going to continue to work on the football side of this issue. They have my full support."
After the meeting, Cook was asked by the media if Favre could be back in Green Bay by Friday and he said that was a good possibility.
"He would love to go back in Green Bay," Cook said, in comments broadcast by ESPNEWS. "I mean, that's why he started working out. But right now, it looks like he'll be the quarterback at Oak Grove High School." Favre worked out with the school's football team on Wednesday before the meeting.
A league source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Wednesday night that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hopes to speak with Favre on Thursday before he decides to reinstate him.
Mortensen reported earlier Wednesday that Goodell was unlikely to rule on Favre's request for reinstatement Wednesday in order to give the sides more time to work out an agreement on the quarterback's future.
"The commissioner is taking no action today," the NFL said in a statement Wednesday. "He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team's roster and salary cap. When Brett is reinstated by the commissioner, we will announce it."

Seriously, as much as we've talked about this at work that past month or so, we always just kind of laughed about it. With it being even that more close to #4 starting in purple, we can't help but laugh even more. Ho. Lee. Shit. Could you imagine the ratings opening night if this happens? Seirously. Pack. Vikings. Lambeau. Favre starting for the Vikes. Yikes. ESPN must be creaming their shorts over the ratings bonanza that is developing in front of their eyes. Let's just see how this day goes.

I don't know what the Packers are doing considering trading him to an NFC North team. Wouldn't it be better to get like a 4th rounder from Kansas City than a first rounder from Minnesota or Chicago?

Well, if you're convinced that he's no good, don't you WANT him on another team in your division. On the other hand, if you don't want him playing for another team in your division, doesn't that mean that he's still good?

This has just been handled sooooo terribly wrong.

I think the thought is that the drop from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers is not steep enough to be concerned, while the increase from Tarvaris Jackson or Rex Grossman to Brett Favre is enough to make a difference.

Straight up would be ridiculous. However, a conditional pick with the possibility of making it to a 1st rounder would be more reasonable.

Sez the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and NFL Network:

Turns out that $20 million was discussed in the off-season, well before this whole standoff began, as some sort of "personal services" contract for Brett. (Goodwill ambassador, maybe? I dunno.)

But the cash wasn't a "please stay retired" bribe.

HOWEVER...the interesting thing that's come up in the last day or two is that the Packers are considering a last-resort option of trading Favre to Minnesota or Chicago...which they previously said they wouldn't do.

(Click those links for hypothetical pics of what Brett would look like in enemy colors.)

This clinches it....this is all a plot to undermine the Vikings or Bears once and for all. Favre gets dealt to Minnesota, and then in the season opener, throws an intentional interception to Al Harris for a return touchdown. Favre then rips off his Vikings jersey to reveal a Packers shirt, while Tony Schiavone...er, Kornheiser screams about Favre tricking everyone.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

This is absolutely the worse thing about this story. MNF has a way of half-watching a football game while they spend a majority of the time on the 'story' that is current. So now every Packers game and whoever, if anyone, ends up with Favre will be an agongizing, inhospitable environment for anything not related to this controversy. Sorry...that was wordy.

Apparently now, Favre will be welcomed back into a QB compeition with Rodgers for the starting gig.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3517219

I stand by my original statement: they should trade Aaron Rodgers to Miami who at this point will give up the farm for anyone who can throw to an open WR and give the job to Favre. Favre has atleast two good years left which is enough time to get Brohm up and running as the eventual starter.

You gotta kinda feel for Aaron Rodgers in this whole mess ... I'm not one for holdouts, but if I were him, I'd demand a trade.
