I thought Thursday would be all quiet on the Comic-Con front, but this year's convention started off with a bang! The notable news for Day 1:

From Comics Continuum and IGN:

-Hugh Jackman made a surprise appearance to pimp "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Scenes featuring The Blob and Deadpool were shown, but the biggest pop came for the debut of Gambit. A big fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth is shown. Jackman promises VIOLENCE and lots of it!

-Scenes from the next Marvel animated DVD, "Hulk vs.", was shown. Particularly, the chapter featuring Hulk vs. Wolverine. This story also features Deadpool, Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool. Deadpool gets plenty of one-liners here. This also promises lots of VIOLENCE; the most violent of Marvel's DVD's to date. The DVD will also feature Hulk vs. Thor.

-A trailer for the new "Afro Samurai: Resurrection" debuted.

-A G.I. Joe webseries is coming soon, written by Warren Ellis.

-Holy hell, it's TRON 2! A brief trailer was shown and Disney announced that more will be unveiled next year, closer to the film's release. And yes, Jeff Bridges is back!

-Kevin Smith will write a three-part Batman story known as Batman: Cacophony, which will take place Post-RIP.

-Garth Ennis may be leaving Punisher MAX, but he will pen another Punisher story. Under the Marvel Knights imprint, Ennis will write Punisher: War Zone, a follow-up to the acclaimed "Welcome Back, Frank". Awesomeness!

X-MEN PANEL

-The panelists call the X-Men's move to San Francisco a "seismic shift" in X-Men history. Matt Fraction promises a debut of a Sisterhood of Evil Mutants. Fraction also promises a return for Dazzler.

-Nick Lowe notes that Iceman will be a key player soon and have a throwdown with a major X villain.

-Fraction notes that Uncanny #504 will deal with Kitty Pryde and her fate.

-The panelists note that Sabretooth won't be coming back (he's dead, you know) and Juggernaut will appear outside the X books. Wolverine's son will soon be integrated more with the X books.

-Questions about Vulcan, the Shi'ar, and Starjammers were met with the cryptic answer "See you at the Secret Invasion panel".

That's it for now. More forthcoming as the weekend goes on.

presumably, the biggest news from Thursday is Geoff Johns writing a Barry Allen Flash book.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=17385

Also, Kevin Spacey, Paris Hilton and Kim K. at Comic-Con?

SO VERY WEIRD

---

I would encourage people to go to CBR for their SD news and (selfishly) The Beat for off-kilter stuff like gossip and parties and what not.

Day 2:

-A panel was dedicated to the new Batman animated series "Brave and the Bold". Yes, it's a campier show harkening back more to the Adam West era, though the show's producers acknowledge that it's a better idea than attempting a half-assed rehash of Batman: The Animated Series. Can't really argue there. Of course, BECAUSE they don't want to dwell in that shadow, the series won't include many of the Bat-elements (Alfred, Gordon, Gotham, Joker, et. al.). New trailer shows off Plastic Man, Green Arrow (looking like he came right out of "New Frontier"), and the new Blue Beetle. Also showed off villains Kite-Man, Gentleman Ghost (!), and Grodd. Looks to be worth a shot.

-A panel was held on the Sensational Spider-Man animated series, that took many (including me) by surprise with how good it is. Season two villains will include Mysterio, Kraven, Master Planner, Molten Man, Venom, Doc Ock, and Vulture. Harry Osborn and the Green Goblin will also return. No guest heroes planned as of yet. Season two kicks off in March.

-No one should be worried about the upcoming "Red Sonja" movie, as Robert Rodriguez promises a hard R-rating.

MARVEL CUP O' JOE PANEL

-Danny Miki and Khoi Pham have signed exclusive deals with Marvel.

-Jeph Loeb assures everyone that the Red and Green Hulks will both be around for a long while. Yay?

-Joe Quesada wants to see something like Civil War or Secret Invasion hit movie theaters someday. Also wants to revitalize Marvel's magic world the way Annihilation revitalized the cosmic world.

-Pieces of the new Black Panther animated series are shown, featuring a fight between Panther and Captain America. The series is done in the style of John Romita Jr.'s artwork. To premiere on BET in February.

-Joe Quesada notes that there's a chance Peter Parker and Mary Jane can get back together, but they won't be married.

-Quesada also notes that "Secret Invasion" might mark the end of big Marvel events for the time being.

He's been saying that for years now, hasn't he? I don't think he means it.

Omg Tron 2 is back from the grave? It was supposed to come out... oh jeez, 5-6 years ago? I think the working title was Son of Tron or something horrible.

Mmmm Gambit. Man, I hope he can do the accent...

I actually have a Neil Gaiman written issue of Batman, it has a brief appearance by John Constantine being interviewed as a "guy on the street".

I don't know if it's the same thing, but Gaiman wrote a great story with the Riddler in a Secret Origins Annual/Special about 20 years ago that referenced a bunch of the old villains from the TV show.

It seems to me that JQ usually floats ideas out there waaaaay in advance to whet the fans appetite or get their minds prepared for what's to come down the line (He started the Peter/MJ marriage debate years before they actually did "One More Day" for instance), so just because they haven't gotten around to it yet ("House of M" to "Civil War" to "Secret Invasion" with some "Annihilation" thrown in for good measure) doesn't mean they won't get around to it when the time is "right."

Or maybe he's just trying to see what chatter he can turn up (if any) to see if they even want to bother. I'm guessing with the success of the "Iron Man" movie who is/was (in the general public's consciousness at least) a second-tier character, they see "Doctor Strange," as another potential movie franchise to cultivate and will see what types of ideas they can unearth to "freshen" it up for current audiences. Maybe they'll even try to make "Brother Voodoo" cool(er).
