I saw this last night. A lot of cool visual stuff to see and a terrifying old lady character, but the movie had a weak ending to me and made the rest of the storie less enjoyable. I usually enjoy M. Night movies but this was not very strong.
Crap. Crap crap crap. I was staggered at how incompetent it was. Horrible writing, horrible directing, horrible acting. Laughably illogical in both the plot and the behavior of the human characters. Sitting through this was practically torture. Not just Shyamalan's worst movie, one of the worst movies of the year. Total shit.
I saw this tonight and I have to ask: how does this guy (M Night Shamalyan) still get backed for movies? I quick run down of his movies show that he is without a doubt, a one trick pony.
Praying With Anger and Wide Awake I never saw and those were his forst directorial films. I have to assume since I have heard nothing about these movies that they are nothing special
The Sixth Sense was awesome and a movie that will stand the test of time. A phenomenal film - acting, writing and dorecting - and one that I watch whenever I see it on TV or cable.
Unbreakable was decent but a huge let down from The Sixth Sense. I was more that willing to give him a pass since The Sixth Sense was so good that ANY movie following it would have been seen as a lesser movie. The writing and directing were weak, but the acting (Willis and Jackson) carried the movie.
Signs. Awful. I remember seeing the promos for this and getting really psyched and when I saw it, I came out of the theatre shaking my head in disgust. Writing, dorecting and acting were poor. A terrible movie.
The Village. God Lord - even worse than Signs. Not one redeeming thing about this movie. Just plain awful.
The Lady in The Water. This is probably the only MNS movie that gets mixed reviews. Either you loved it or hated it. I hated it but my wife loved it. But really - if half the people out there hate it and the other half love it - you can;t feel good about it if your the Film Company backing it.
The Happening. I won't spoil any of this film in case there are peolple who want to see it, but much like Signs, the promos are WAY better than the movie it self. A utterly ridiculous movie.
But I guess the reason he still is able to make movies is the box office. I was stunned to see how much his films have made.
BOX OFFICE
The Sixth Sense - $293 million Unbreakable - $95 million Signs - $228 million The Village - $115 million The Lady in the Water - $42 million
Oh well. I guess at this rate, if The Happeining pulls in the average of these flicks (roughly $160 million), then we will see anothe MNS "shocker" in two years.
"Marriage is like that show ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, but it’s not funny. All the problems are the same, but you know instead of all the funny, pithy dialogue, everybody is really pissed off and tense. Marriage is like a tense, unfunny version of 'Everybody Loves Raymond', only it doesn't last 22 minutes. It lasts forever."
I think Wpob is actually being too kind. Sixth Sense is overrated too. It was a decent watch the first time but once you know the ending re-watching it is excruciatingly boring, which is probably common with that type of movie but it's still possible to make a movie with a twist ending re-watchable.
In addition to his movies doing well at the box office I wonder how much it costs to make. I don't think there are big special effects and he hasn't really gotten top level talent (expense-wise) for a few movies now. Still, the last one only made $42 million and I think most people have started to catch on so I'm not sure how much longer it will last.
After Friday estimations were it was only slightly ahead of Kung Fu Panda for second place ($12.8 mil to $10 mil)

Other than that, I had a terrible time.
I saw this movie on opening day with about 15 other people that I will be living and working with for the next 2 months. It was an excellent bonding experience... because it was possibly (probably?) the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. It was so illogical, so unintelligible, so irrational, it was just laughably bad. We've been quoting the movie nonstop all day Saturday.
If I saw it by myself or with a smaller group, I would have cursed a blue streak out of the theater. As it is I couldn't help but boo at the screen when the credits came up (and everyone in the theater laughed). If you ask me, M. Night is like Nintendo's Super Mario franchise: sometimes he puts out good work, but sometimes he puts out complete garbage and depends on name recognition to make money.
Don't see this movie unless you want to have a new movie to call the worst you've ever seen.
I know I am almost surely alone in this, but I kind of liked "The Village" when I saw it. I always felt like some of the anger came from the terrible marketing campaign, that made the film look like some sort of horror flick. It wasn't the greatest film ever by a long shot, but it was solidly acted, had some beautiful shots and an excellent score. I wasn't watching very closely when I saw it, so perhaps it was obvious and I just missed it, but I was surprised by the final twist and I thought it made sense within the movie. I can see it not being on someone's top 10 films list, but I don't get the stinging vitriol thrown at it.
Now "Unbreakable" and "Lady in the Water"...those were awful.

You're not alone, spf. My wife and I saw this in the theater (and we don't see many non-kid movies in the theater, I tells ya) and we were entertained by "The Village." It wasn't great, but it wasn't awful, we didn't think.
This is M. Night dealing, as a father, with the story of a family unit running from faceless malevolence. It's absolutely a reaction to 9/11, and, seen that way, it's an affecting film. I'm glad I saw it, and I'm glad he went small-scale for this.

The Village is the only M. Knight movie I have liked other than Sixth Sense.

I liked "The Village" also and believe that the marketing campaign for "Signs" was the main reason alot of people hated that movie also. I really liked "Signs", but I think alot of people were expecting a big sci-fi "War of the Worlds" type of movie.
"Unbreakable" I liked too, but "Lady in the Water" was possibly the worst film I have ever watched.

Uhhhhh, what?? Using environmentalism and fears of global warming as a metaphor for 9/11? That's quite a stretch, Mr. Tracker.
