After a legendary 18-year career with the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings, goalie Dominik Hasek is retiring from the National Hockey League.
He helped the Red Wings to Stanley Cup wins in 2002 and 2008; in 2002 he became the first European goaltender ever to win the Cup. From 1993 to 2001 he won six Vezina Trophies (best goaltender), and in 1998 he became the first goaltender to win consecutive Hart Trophies (most valuable player).
"It, uh... it was not supposed to be a fight to the death." "Trust me, they're better off now." "Yeah, you're probably right."
Not to mention that he beat the entire world of hockey at the 1988 Winter Olympics. That had to be one of the great underappreciated sporting achievements ever--he was tremendous, and led the Czechs to victory over teams loaded up with talent.
