I am in the midst of a home theater upgrade of sorts, and I'm looking for a good learning remote that won't break the bank (I'm looking at YOU, Logitech!). Here are the devices I need to control:

  • Panasonic Tau series widescreen CRT HDTV (Dunno the model number...I think it's 34" or 36")
  • Comcast Motorola HD-DVR
  • Xbox (original, not 360, running XBMC (not that it makes a difference...))
  • Maybe a receiver in the next 6 months or so...gotta get a surround rig in here

The supplied Comcast remote works surprisingly well for all the devices, except for one little thing...on the Xbox, everything works except the "Select/OK" button, which defaults over to the damn cable box. Aggravating. So, help me out?

I know the logitech ones are expensive, but they are worth it. I think you can get the xbox 360 logitech for $100, and the performance and setup are perfect. You just plug it in to your pc, put in your models and its almost done. Worth a look at least.

Yeah, you're right...the lower-end Logitechs are far more reasonable on eBay. What's the difference between the 550 and the 659?

All the remotes other than the 890 do the same stuff petty much. The differences are some use rechargable batteries(mine uses AAA), the size and shape and color screen or not. The 890, which is ridiculously priced, adds RF capability for controlling lights/fans and such.

So either one will do a fine job I would bet.

I have the xbox 360 one my self and it rocks, as wmatistic said there's no big difference between the lower end ones, just the battery or if the screen is color or black and white. This is a great time to buy one cause the new logitech remotes like the One are getting to store and they have to liquidate the old ones.
