Perhaps the worst-kept secret in Sci-FI was officially announced today as Steven Moffat will succeed Russell T Davies as executive producer of Doctor Who.
Moffat takes over in 2010, more than likely with a new Doctor, since David Tennant's contract runs out in 2009.
Moffat has written some award-winning episodes of the new show, including "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink."
This news is probably greeted with thunderous cheers in some Doctor Who fandom circles, but I never had the problems with RTD episodes that others did.
That said, "Blink" is probably one of my favorite episodes of any TV ever, so this change will make for some fantastic Who in the future.
Agreed. Moffat is responsible for the best of the best when it comes to the new series. "Blink" was fantastic, as was "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", and, shockingly enough, "The Girl in the Fireplace" beat out Douglas Adams and "City of Death" for the title of my favorite Doctor Who episode of all time. 2010 can't come fast enough.

It's funny that you mention that "Girl in the Fireplace" for you bests "City of Death," which is an absolute triumph of not only the Graham Williams era, but of the classic series as a whole, because, really, at least IMO, there's so much from the new 'WHO' that completely outshines the classic series, while at the same time, capitalizing on all that has been developed.
Modern 'WHO' doesn't try to diminish the original series in any way; rather, it takes the mythos of the series to a whole new dimension. And I LOVE the fact that the current series isn't afraid to reference the past, and finds a great medium to where the past isn't some fanboy-fetish. I think that actually has a lot to do with Russell T. Davis. To boot, the foundation he's set for Steven Moffat is solid all-around.
I'm gonna have to get used to referring to the current series as Moffat 'WHO' eventually, as I'm usually accustomed to discussing 'WHO' in the present as Russell T. 'WHO!' If 'Blink,' 'Girl in the Fireplace,' and 'Empty Child/Doctor Dances' are but a glimpse of what we all have in store for us (and most likely, or inevitably, a new Doctor), the future of what I think is the best show on television is brighter than the brilliance of the Eye of Harmony itself!
BTW-- How soon do all of us Whovians start speculation on who succeeds David Tennant as the 11th Doctor? Hmmm...
Robert Carlyle is the current frontrunner if the rumours are to be believed. I think he would make a great Doctor, albeit a very different one to David Tennant's (who has been fantastic).
I dunno...I have loved Tennant's Doctor, but sometimes he seems like the Peter Davison to Eccleston's Tom Baker. That being the case, you know what's coming next...

He already had his chance :-). Believe it or not, Grant was originally supposed to be the Ninth Doctor. I'm not counting his cameo in that Comic Relief program.
NOTES: The following shows aired reruns in their normal timeslot: Law & Order: SVU, Back To You, 'Til Death, Kitchen Nightmares, K-Ville. Bionic Woman was prempted by a second hour of Phenomenon.
