I saw a sneak preview of this last night. All I can say is go see this immediately!! It was all kinds of awesome. The summer action blockbuster bar has been set and will be very tough to surpass. Not only was the movie itself cool, but there are a few little treats (including potential sequel fodder) for comic fans who pay attention during the movie.
Lisa: Poor predicatble Bart, always picks rock Bart: Good ole rock, nothing beats that
Damn. Wish I had stayed for the post-credits . . .what was it, anyways?
Agree with the kudos for this movie. For once, none of the usual things that annoy me when comics gets translated to screen and the shout outs for the long-time Iron Man geeks were also much appreciated.
Summer's off to a great start.

Best Marvel movie yet. I def liked it way more than any of the Spider Man (Men?) movies. I REALLY liked how they subtly set up the Mandarin for the updated world of the character (I don't think that's a spoiler, it was openly acknowledged that they were doing so I believe).
I concur, this movie was totally sweet. Very slick all around, and like said previously the comic stuff didn't get in the way of the movie, but it was there enough where if you knew about it, it was totally "ooohhhh..:)"
I don't read comics, but I do love superhero movies. This was outstanding. I was even able to tolerate Gwyneth Paltrow, who I normally loathe. Terrific movie!
I saw this today and loved it. It almost lived up to all my expectations - which were very high. My only problem with the movie was all the secondary character - with the slight exception of Terrence Howard - were bland and needed more meat. Maybe that will come with the sequel. Robert Downey Jr. absolutely carried this movie on his back and much like Harrison Ford as Indiand Jones, I do not think any toher actor could have pulled this role of Tony Stark/Iron Man off NEARLY as perfect as Downey did. I would go as far as to say he should be nominated for an Oscar, but since the Academy RAREly recoginizes great acting in blovkbuster action films, I doubt he will.
8 of 10 stars for me. A must see for sure.
"Marriage is like that show ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, but it’s not funny. All the problems are the same, but you know instead of all the funny, pithy dialogue, everybody is really pissed off and tense. Marriage is like a tense, unfunny version of 'Everybody Loves Raymond', only it doesn't last 22 minutes. It lasts forever."

I didn't catch any reference to the Mandarin. Can you explain a little?
I thought it was a pretty great movie, but I don't think it tops the bar set by Spider-Man. I did really like the focus on invention and development, as opposed to just having him show up in a new suit.

The terrorist cell that kidnapped Tony Stark and worked with Obediah Stane was called the Ten Rings. A subtle reference to the ten rings of power the Mandarin wears.
I loved Iron Man too. Loved Robert Downey, Jr. Tony Stark was by far the coolest superhero ever in movies. Loved his private jet with the stripper pole and stripper stewardesses. Loved how Jarvis was a computer AI in his sweet pad. Loved just about everything. Even Gwyneth didn't bug me until the last act when she turned into a blathering damsel in distress. "Oh Tony! Oh no! You could die!" Lady, just shut up and turn on the reactor!
For a guy with no superpowers and a fatal hole in his chest, Tony Stark sure could absorb repeated blunt force trauma. Considering how many times he crashed into walls, cars, buildings, etc. at high velocity. His bones should be powder. He should be paralyzed. Or you know, dead.
It will be curious if/when they do the Mandarin, since there is such fear by the studios that an Asian villain (especially a stereotypical one) could alienate the valuable overseas box office.
Definitely my favorite Marvel movie so far too. I think one of the best things they did was start with action, then flashbacked to a day and a half earlier to set up how he got in that position. A lot of super hero movies start from the beginning of the story and are pretty slow for the first half.
Also in some movies we didn't see the superhero enough (like Ghost Rider) but in this movie there was actually not a whole lot of Iron Man and it was good that way. It was more like Tony Stark the movie with guest appearance by Iron Man.

I think that was my favorite part of the movie, honestly. And I really liked the movie.

Maybe his base will be in Mongolia, like in LXG.
I wouldn't be surprised if they just have him be the head terrorist*. Stane didn't kill him, he was constantly twisting that giant ring... and since they made a point of mentioning how many different languages were being spoken, they could easily just avoid the issue of his specific nationality all together and duck around the name like they did with Iron Monger.
*- Obviously if he shows up he's the leader of the Ten Rings, but you know what I mean.
edit: according to wikipedia, the novelization makes reference to a higher leader than the one we saw in the movie. Logically, that'd be the Mandarin.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'll take Robert Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow over Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst ten times out of ten. The chemistry was SO much better here. Every characterization was dead-on, especially Downey, who was absolutely phenomenal! If I had to nitpick, I'd complain that the last fight was a bit anti-climactic. But other than that, this was everything you could hope for and more.
And lest anyone believe that Marvel isn't about to ride the momentum of this, comic book fans (or those looking to follow the continuing adventures of Iron Man) can look forward to the re-launch of The Invincible Iron Man, featuring the son of Obadiah Stane looking to avenge his father AND an out-of-continuity Iron Man story written by the movie's director Jon Favreau. Look for both of those on Wednesday!
As for the post-credits scene...

The entire theater geeked out when Sam "Nick Fury" Jackson mentioned "The Avengers Initiative". Good God, I haven't heard a theater pop like that in years!
Marvel's movie line-up is essentially set for the next 7 years or so.
Looking at the list of films based on Marvel comics here (en.wikipedia.org) , they've been churning them out at a rate of 3 per year. Ironman was done by Paramount and 20th Century and Columbia have done most of the movies lately. With all the titles that have been announced, I'd be surprised if they didn't start putting out 5+ a year. I look forward to an Avengers movie!

Not in "The Ultimates" he ain't, and that's probably been the best portrayal of a Nick Fury character in a LONNNNNG time. If they make an "Avengers" movie with Mark Millar's "The Ultimates" as the backdrop, I'll be a happy happy man.
And dude, you need to read "The Ultimates" and "The Ultimates 2" in trade. It's awesome.
Nothign else to add other than that I really really liked this movie, and I too would put it a notch above Spider-Man...particularly for the performances of the cast. What I really liked about Downey's performance - in addition to the fact that the guy can make a scene relevant with a single facial expression - is that he wasn't afraid at times to subtly play up Tony Stark as an eccentric.

But by all means, please STOP there! Jeph Loeb has effectively murdered the franchise with "Ultimates 3".
Having said that, I caught the movie a second time and it STILL kicks a lot of ass, even the second time around. And it takes a special kind of movie for me to see it a second time in theaters. I haven't done that since "Anchorman".

According to the guy who does movie reviews on our local radio station, the screening he went to saw people realizing 20 minutes in how bad it was, and went MST3K on it. Yelling jokes, booing lines, and basically pissing all over it.
