Mick Foley is replacing Jonathan Coachman as SmackDown color commentator starting at Backlash tonight.
Thank God! An intelligent, well spoken, dependable veteran and former World Champion providing color. That formula worked before with JBL. Foley will be a relief to how unlistenable the SmackDown announce team has been for the last few months.
If Foley leans heel and provides a foil for Cole, that'd be even better, but whatever. I'm just glad Foley is here and Coach is gone.
A perfect move, for more than just the obvious reasons. They've been paying Foley a lot of money to sit at home, plus this is a good way to make any other returns to the rings mean more (granted, when his recent matches have included v. Coach and v. Highlanders, anything is a step up).
It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.
If Foley can stay on point I think he could be the best at getting talent and angles over. I would have liked to have heard him with Ross, but now that I think about it I would almost like to hear just about anybody different with Jim Ross just to see what it's like. Michael Cole will get instantly better now that he has someone to playoff of again.
Coachman is better off being a dickhead to some middle card talent.
Great news. I like Coachman as an on-screen toady just fine, but I think the color guy should always be a retired wrestler. "I've been in that hold, Cole, and let me tell you..."

His last stint as commentator was terrible. Coach being gone is nice, but it's not really time to declare this the best move ever just yet.
He's one of the smartest interviews in the business, I'm happy to give him a chance to see him grow into the role. Judging him on one night with no prior experience is a little unfair.

They never gave Arn Anderson a chance to grow into the role after his disasterous performance at the beginning of the Invasion, and he was as good, if not better, than Foley on the mic.
I still would prefer they move Taz back to Smackdown. But Foley's an interesting choice, and I didn't like the idea of JBL at first either, but he proved me wrong. So I guess I'm willing to see how it shakes out.

To be fair, he was with Joey Styles then. Styles isn't as good as Cole, and is used to working solo.
Before you dismiss Cole>Styles entirely (since somebody will likely stick up for him), keep in mind which team was better: Cole/Tazz or Styles/Tazz.

Noted and agreed. In my opinion, Tazz was best with Matthews. If Adamle washes out at ECW, they should give Josh a shot.

I miss Matthews. That guy was awesome calling Velocity. I loved when he would interject random nuggets of trivia about London or Yang and the like. Whereas JR might say "he's so quick, he's sudden" and leave it at that, Matthews would say "one time during a match for Zero One, he got his orbital socket shattered and he still finished the match."
As far the Foley/Styles, it was more ECW's night than anything and well, Styles is a much bigger part of that and to me, it was more Foley letting Styles do his thing instead of trying to talk over him or just say something just to be heard.
Cena can't be beat because he's some unholy genetic recombinate of superstars past. I mean, you might as well call him John "Realest of the Real, Sargent Rock - Cold - A - Mania" Cena.
