Well, It looks as though I am on my way to getting the "Red Ring of Death"! Just great, at least I only have 3 hours into "Lost Odyssey".

It started out with a game freeze. Then I reset the game, freeze again. Reset once more the Xbox turns on then I hear a beep and 3/4 of the ring is red. I turn off the 360 for a number of hours. Turn it back on..black screen and full red ring. Shut it off for three more hours. Turn it back on xbox loads game, I hear a beep and 3/4 of a ring is back again. Turned it off and left it alone.

What's the deal? Can I get this fixed? I've searched online and found nothing but bad news (other than a clean the hardrive cache trick...which didn't work either). Can this be taken to a shop?

Needless to say I am not happy about this and am already considering my options if this problem cannot be fixed. If this is fixable is it worth it? Will I just see this problem again? Or, am I better off selling the hardrive, wireless controllers, guitar hero controller, 2 rechargeable batteries and charger, head set & games on ebay to put the funds towards the PS3 (already have a Wii)?

Sorry for the all over the place rant...I just went from a 360 fan to wishing I never left Sony. The system is only a year and half old!

Any advice is appreciated (except from WMATISTIC, only because of his love affair with Bill Gates and this specific console that I am hating right now).

Your Xbox 360 is under warranty for 3 years after the date of purchase for any 3 red rings problems.

Just call 1-800-4MY-XBOX (1-800-469-9269) and they will ask for your systems serial number and then mail you a shipping box with packing materials so you can ship them your Xbox 360 free of charge.

They most likely will just send you a brand new one (that's what they did for me and also for a few of my friends). The newer Xbox 360's supposedly are fixed of the overheating problems that cause the "3 rings of death". My friends and I have never had a problem with our newer 360's that were mailed back to us.

Hey now I'm not in love with Bill Gates, I just dig the 360 more than the PS3. I like the Wii just as much actually. I don't hate Sony, I just think they dropped the ball with the PS3 and it upset me because I loved the PS2. If they put out a bunch of great games and I'll change my tune and go pick one up.

And I've had the three rings problem too. I called in, got the box, sent it in on Monday and got it back that Friday. Though the repair center I sent it to was in the same state I live in so that was probably faster than you'll get it back.

In the end it's seems to happen to every non-Nintendo system I own so wasn't a big deal to me, especially because of the warranty. My Dreamcast died on me the day I got it, I went through two PS1's and three PS2's. Not fun, but it happens.

Yikes. I get one red light when I more than two 6-min qtr games of Madden in a row. Sometimes Madden will just randomly freeze. Once I got a WEIRD green screen that told me (in 6 or so different languages) that if I wanted to play the game, I had to put it in an X-box 360. If I ever get that screen again, I'm taking a pic.

Any other game is ok.

I STILL play my Dreamcast to this day. Launch one too. I can't get enough of Marvel vs Capcom 2. I even wrote a FAQ for it (or was it the 1st game?) for gamefaqs.com back in 2000-ish under my old alias of Rikidozan for people who wanted to select the right color and assist type for their team. I probably play it once every 8-10 weeks. Same with my Saturn too. All those killer Working Designs games.

Had to send mine in a few months ago. The one I got back from them wasn't brand new, it was a refurbished one. I've had no problems with it, though. The whole process start to finish took about a month, but it started Chrismas Eve, so they might get you done faster. I also got a free month of Xbox Live Gold out of the deal.

That's great news. I'm going to give it a shot.

I actually had a similar problem with EA's NCAA game, I think the previous version, not the current one. Don't think any other game did that. Though this was all before I got the 3 lights. Hasn't happened since but I don't play that old version anymore.

Have you had the lights yet, or is this an original system? I would say it sounds like the overheating problems most people have. Might be leading to a failure but you can't do anything about it until it happens so I wouldn't worry too much.

To clarify, my Madden is last year's (2007) as well. The 2007 NCAA would have a few lockup issues as well, but it is not as bad as Madden. I had to skip on the 08 games after playing it at a friends's house. It wasn't because we had more INTs than completions, it was the interface. It reminded me of Madden 89 than 08.

I have a launch day 360 and I haven't had the RRoD, yet, but that was the closest to it. I thought it was overheating as well, but 2 hours of Madden will lock it up. 6 hours of Mass Effect? No problems. I have it in an open-air cabinet under my HDTV and my PS3 four feet away and the Wii above it have no locking up issues (except for games I get from Gamefly. Kids are hard on those Wii discs).

I've always had issues with EA games (including the latest Sim City from a few years back on the PC) since about 2004. The PS2 version would have the same issues as the 360. Sometimes the game wouldn't load after multiple attempts, but that may be because of the laser.

I tried to watch a DVD on it while I worked out in the basement and it can't read the 2nd layer of a dual layer movie. I only got halfway through Stripes during my cardio. Sadness.

Dude, that's you? I used that FAQ a lot when I played MvC2.

I'm wondering about system problems. I mean, I've never had a problem with a PS2, a PSone, or any other system. The only problem I ever had was with a PSone that had a faulty modchip installed.

That's me. If you go back and look at any thread from my first 1500 or so posts, you'll see people quoting me as Rikidozan until Guru was kind enough to change my username.

I was WAY too much in to wrestling back then (1998-2003) and used Rikidozan for almost all my screen names.

It was silly to have a wrestling themed name here as I pretty much gave up on wrestling back in 2003ish. I still watch it, but only for ODB and Santino. Seriously. They both amuse me in very differnt ways.

I never got the urge to write up a FAQ for any other game. That was the only one guide that I felt was missing from all the huge movelists that were coming out. I remember being pretty proud when it they added it. I might have to go back and re-read it. I think there's a shout out to my GF at the time who I haven't talked to in eight years...

This will probably come up as an anti-leech page, but here's the link to it.

I don't even have that hotmail account at the top of the FAQ. If the game was still reverent, I would update that, I guess.

EDIT: I wonder why I never finished making the color groupings list. Sounds like a good excuse to update the FAQ.

I have had my 360 since Oct 06' and outside of one freezing issue playing Forza 2, I have never had any problems. Is this more prevalent on first run systems and maybe I am out of the woods on this?

I have only owned mine for a month longer than you. The manufacture date on the back of the console was June 2006. If I were to compare my situation with yours, I wouldn't say that you are out of the woods yet. I had no signs at all that this was going to happen. The system never froze on a game or overheated.

On the plus side, I called the Xbox system support number mentioned earlier. It was pretty smooth and a very simple transaction. I am waiting for my shipping box to arrive. Once I send it, I was told 2-3 weeks turnaround time max.

I am happily looking forward to spending many more hours on Lost Odyssey's 4 disks.
