I don't think if you aren't from here you can fully understand how much of an institution this man was. He was the Steelers. He was an icon. He was Pittsburgh, PA. Okel dokel and double yoi.

Probably the closest example of that I can think of would be that Myron was to the Steelers and the city of Pittsburgh as Harry Caray was to the Cubs and Chicago.

Terrible Towel Day Planned To Honor Cope
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) Pittsburghers continue to offer their final goodbyes to legendary Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope.

The beloved local icon died at a Mount Lebanon nursing home on Wednesday at the age of 79.

Everyone from the Steelers to Cope's friends and Pittsburghers to his co-workers have been offering their condolences and fond memories of the writer and sportscaster.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced plans today for a Terrible Towel Day, featuring – of course - the waving towels, on Friday afternoon.

The Mayor and local radio station, B-94, are asking Pittsburghers to bring their Terrible Towels to work with them Friday morning. Then, at noon, join together on the Grant Street steps of the City-County Building for the tribute.

"We want to have a Terrible Towel Day tomorrow for the city of Pittsburgh," said B94 DJ, Bubba, "and also any people that aren't in Pittsburgh anymore - cause you know once a Pittsburgher always a Pittsburgher - where everybody takes their Terrible Towel to work wherever they go tomorrow and make it official Terrible Towel Day."

Cope's tenure as the color analyst on the Steelers' radio network from 1970-2004 is the longest in NFL history for a broadcaster with a single team. In 2005, he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

Cope recently had been treated for heart and respiratory problems.

On Wednesday night, the University of Pittsburgh paid tribute to Cope with a Terrible Towel wave at the men's basketball game. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951, and served as a color analyst for the Panthers football team in 1983.
