3:00pm has come and gone. The big movers and shakers of the day:

- Dallas acquires Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist for 3 guys led by Mike Smith. Good trade for both, Tampa dumps salary AND picks up that #1 goalie they needed. Dallas just gets better.

- San Jose picks up Brian Campbell and gives up Bernier.

- Montreal gives up Cristobal Huet for No Apparent Reason to the Capitals. BALLSY and I bet it backfires this season!

- Washington also grabs Sergei Federov.

- And the big one ... Marian Hossa is going to PITTSBURGH! Who saw THAT coming??? Of course, all they had to give up was Colby Armstrong, Erik Christiansson, the Esposito kid, a 1st round pick, and Mario Lemieux's 1st, 4th, and 5th born children. A fair price.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators don't trade Ray Emery. He is late to the arena again. Local media heads explode. Lynching forthcoming.

I'm excited to see Crosby play with "the winger for Crosby," but yiiiiiiiiikes. All that for an UFA. Maybe "all that" will never pan out. But this is jarring. They'd better re-sign him.

What's Colorado doing? They forgot Tanguay and Blake.

I was paying close attention to this trade deadlinw for good reason. When we traded Huet, the first thing that came up in my mind was "clearing cap space for a sign-and-trade!". When the Big Trade never happened (ie; The Pens gave up more stuff for Hossa) I will admit I was concerned. Deeply concerned. After time to reflect, I have cosnideed the following:

- It also made perfect sense because we weren't going to keep Huet after this year anyway, so why bother pulling a Buffalo 07?

- We have a solid team right now with a good, young core. There was ZERO reason for us to trade Higgins for a UFA.

If the Price is Right and he drawns within himself to become Roy 86/93, then we'll look back at this and say Gainey = BRILLIANT. If the Price is Theodore, we will look back and cringe. I'm betting on the former. Price has shown hismelf to be a winner on all levels he has played on, and I think hell perform well (albiet with some minor hiccups). Halek ain't bad either.

I will say one thing, I do not want to face Shaprio's Pens in the first round.

I don't understand all the hype over Smith. Potential #1 goalie? Sure. He ain't been one yet, though. Granted, he'll be better than Holmqvist, I suspect.

Meanwhile, Tampa dumps some of the salary they can't possibly justify with the way they've performed this year. As much fun as it was to watch LeCavalier, St. Louis, and Richards, the writing's been on the wall for quite some time.

At the very least, Carey Price is on top of the world right now. This was a smart move: give Price his head and see where it leads; maybe he gets hot and they make a run. Otherwise, keep bringing Halak along and rest comfortably knowing this is a young team that may not make the Conference finals this year, but will be a threat to go all the way if they keep playing their cards right.

    Washington also grabs Sergei Federov.

I hope he came with a complimentary walker...

Does Washington think they can make a run? I don't see them paying for Federov's next contract.

And the big one ...

Pittsburgh apparently thinks this is their year. I can't think of another reason to give up so much for a 3-month rental.

I guess if you've got Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury under contract, you figure you've got a few kicks at the can over the next couple of years, but I personally suspect that one of those guys won't be there when the Pens next lift the Cup (don't get me wrong, though, it'll happen in the next five years).

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators don't trade Ray Emery. He is late to the arena again. Local media heads explode. Lynching forthcoming.

I don't understand Ottawa. Never have. Probably never will. I'll never get tired of watching them lose in the playoffs after a great regular season, though.

I agree with El Nastio - that when the Huet trade went down, I figured it was the first piece. I figured the NEXT step was the very obvious Hossa/Hedberg combo. In fact, they may have been led to BELIEVE that was what was coming. From what I understand Don Waddell went MIA sometime in the late afternoon and just decided not to call Gainey or Murray back after the Pittsburgh offer. I guess he had no urge to squeeze the grapefruits one more time and try for Vermette + Kelly + Foligno + a draft pick. The fans in Ottawa are ready to riot, and from what I'm reading the very vocal Montrealites aren't much happier.

That said, NOBODY in the NorthEast division improved, so both teams can cram it.

Justin - I understand Claude Lemieux was spotted at the Colorado wave pool this afternoon practicing his diving while Marc Crawford looked on in starry eyed approval.

Tarnish, Smith may not have ever performed as a #1, but he's ready. He's stepped up to task when Turco was struggling early, and has looked sharp the whole way. Getting a little playing time in Tampa can only be good. I'd MUCH rather see a kid get his crack than John Graehme or Holmqvist, or Sean Burke, or Darren Puppa, or Manon Rheame ....

Re: Ottawa choking - I could write a book about the joy I've gotten from seeing this city flattened like an atomic bomb after every playoff exit. Seriously, who throws a parade for winning a playoff series???? OTTAWA, that's who. Sens Army, marching proudly to the honk of Dany Heatley's rental car. Poll 100 people and you'll no doubt discover their favorite player is Wade Alfreddson.

Don't forget the Wild picking up Chris Simon! I can't wait for Chris Simon to take the ice for the Wild (but I bet I'll be waiting a long time)!

Weren't you a Sharks fan at some point? They just got Brian Campbell, which should kick start their season. He is the great puck moving defenceman they have needed for years.

As stated above, the Pens gave a lot for Hossa. They will be an incredible team to watch, but nothing short of the conference finals (or Esposito being a total bust) will do after this trade. Still, I am glad they made the trade simply from an entertainment perspective. I know I will watch every Penguins game I can (as if I didn't before).

You'd assume the Penguins already figured out if Hossa will stay after this season.
If not, this is a very strange move.

Montreal take a gutsy move, and I hope it works out for them.

Fedorov could do well in Washington. I always like him so I'm hoping for the best.

Campbell to the Sharks and Richards to the Stars just made the top of the west even more interesting.
Three viable Cup contenders fighting for one division title.
Sweet

As someone on ESPN pointed out, if you look at the teams right now, there's no way the Eastern conference can match the West in terms of power and stars.
Despite the East having most of the top scorers.

Oh, and Toronto is no longer a ship without direction, they're the freaking Titanic long after hitting the iceberg.

*sigh* Why bother?

After listening to Shero on the Fan last night they are making an effort for this year, but still feel they have the young talent to keep this up for a few years, whether or not Hossa stays.

They will be a tough out in the playoffs, with one caveat. If their goaltending does not stand up (Conklin or Fleury) adding what they did won't matter. To me that is a big IF.

Add to that Anaheim adding Bergeron as a what, #5 or 6 D and Colorado getting Forsberg and Foote (assuming they make the playoffs...), the West playoffs are going to be a lot of fun.

What's that mean? They know they're going down!! I give Fletcher a lot of credit. He couldn't do much thanks to all his big names having no-trade clauses and all of them saying NO. He dumped what he could at this point, and got back some draft picks. Everyone keeps pointing out that they Leafs have no young talent and needed to start this process of stock-piling picks and young guys. To me, this is the first step, and one that no-one in this market has had the balls to do before.

Cliff made a point to say yesterday that they will be buying-out, cutting and re-tooling in the offseason. He seems to have a plan, or at the very least the beginnings of one.

I am going with LA six games, mainly, because I would like to see a majority of these games. As long as it wasn't the Flyers, I really just don't care. Yet, I will be watching these games, I find this a very intriguing match up.
