Baseball home run king Barry Bonds tested positive for steroids in November 2001, just a month after hitting his record 73rd home run of the season, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday.

Well, this is a new and unexpected turn of...nevermind.

In any event, what does it really mean at this point, other than something to distract us from the good news of pitchers and catchers reporting, and the bad news that either Brian McNamee or Roger Clemens has decided that lying to CONGRESS is a viable strategy? Yes, it kills whatever slim hope he had of being a first-ballot Hall of Famer dead. In fact I'll go a step further and say that if this ends with Bonds going up the river for perjury, he doesn't get in to the Hall at all via the writers. But, this has dragged on for so long that it doesn't really seem like a blockbuster announcement any more. It's just another name on the roster at this point.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not surprised about this news. Just tired about hearing it. Kwik's right, it doesn't change anything; the only impact I think it might have is if the proscecutors use this as evidence for thier trial... if they finally ever go through this trial after all these years. You think after all this time, the law could have done something to convict Bonds by now.

This is actually a typo - the test Bonds failed was in 2000. Though I can't figure who would've been testing him for drugs at that point - MLB sure wasn't.

OK, THIS is a new and unexpected turn of events!

Well, not really, but still...

Doesn't really change a whole lot, he WAS juicing at some point during his run, and that's been pretty well established at this point. At least this happened early enough for the morning editions to kill their stories.

This is all spinning out of control. I'm not even sure it matters who did what anymore. I don't think people will rest until there are heads on stakes though. It would be nice if they could just stop it from happening from here on out.

Well considering they don't have a reliable test for HGH, the only way I can see to try and stop it is to put fear into the players. Fear that anyone, even their good friends, might turn on them and that it could lead to the end of their career and jail time. Because right now I think none of them believe that can actually happen, what with Bonds being able to keep himself playing and safe all this time. I think that's mostly why Clemens feels he can get away with lying now.

Put those two in jail and we'll see what impact it has.

Well, so much for this thread.

I take it cbs5.com also edited their own story between the time StaggerLee posted link and now? Because that link says that the "report" was a typo and that there is no news of Bonds on steroids.

I think Barry Bonds has proven repeatedly he's a complete DOPE. Who cares what Barry Bonds thinks? Barry Bonds is a total jerk. Just in the past three weeks I can think of two completely ridiculous statements he's made: 1)
