Steve Rogers is dead. Long live Captain America!

Captain America #34: After all the hype, it's finally here. The new Cap has arrived!

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
As many have guessed, it's the Winter Soldier (the former Bucky. And as for that gun that has some people up in arms (no pun intended), he does reveal his reasoning, as Bucky notes he's been trained and fought with weapons his whole life. And now that he has the Cap mantle, without the Super-Soldier formula that powered Steve Rogers, Bucky now finds himself reliant on his weapons training more than ever.

But lest anyone think this issue is all about the new Cap, Ed Brubaker successfully demonstrates exactly why this series is among the best ongoings out there. The pacing towards the shocking ending is nothing short of fantastic. A must-buy!

The New Avengers Annual #2: The Hood's gang of bad guys bring the fight to the New Avengers. And hey, remember when Doctor Strange helped himself to the essence of Zom back in World War Hulk? Yeah, that's kinda biting him in the ass right now...

Countdown to Final Crisis #13: It's Superman Prime vs. The Monarch! Who emerges victorious?

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Monarch taunts SP one time too many and an enraged Prime tears off a chunk of Monarch's suit. One big bang blast later and it's goodbye Monarch, goodbye Superman Prime, goodbye Monarch's entire multiversal army, and goodbye Earth 51.

Regardless of the outcome, Darkseid arrives to steal the show from all villainous amateurs. Should only get better from here.

Black Adam: The Dark Age #6 (of 6): One of the sadder endings to a mini-series I've seen in a while, as Black Adam continues his reign as DC's single-most tragic and complex villain. Adam also discovers his magic word...and let's give Captain Marvel credit. I don't think any of us could have guessed it.

That's this week's comics. Long live the new Cap!

The only thing I've read out of my considerable stack so far was the last issue of "Y The Last Man" which was very good. This is the one book I've followed through trades (because I was a little late to the party on this one and didn't want to feel "compelled" to buy originals - just the way my compulsive collector mind works), but picked up the last few issues on the stands and must say that the ending was very good and satisfying in a very different way than I thought it might be. It was also very easy to follow along with even though I'm a few trades behind in my reading.

Looking forward to reading the Zero issue of the new Alex Ross book as well as Cap #34.

I also loved the Y finale, even if a few things were left unresolved. The last few pages revealing the final fate of Yorick had me marking out!

Brubaker's run on Cap has included elements that are everything that I hate about comics: Unnecessarily resurrecting a long dead character, killing off a major hero, and replacing said hero with a modern, edgier version. But somehow, Ed makes it work, and I love it. It continues to be one of my favorite titles. That's just damn good writing. I assume Steve Rogers will return during Secret Invasion, but I am fine either way.

Not gonna bother with the rest of this, but this argument was just too silly: http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/2011-08-02-new-spider-man-inside_n.htm
