WWE Open.

-Clips of last Mondays main event aired.

-Jeff Hardys music played and the IC Champ entered the arena. He said he was excited about getting the chance to be WWE champion. But hes angry because he didnt take Orton out last week- but he will tonight. Jeff said Orton could come out or hed go back and get him. Randy came out and made a proposition- Jeff put his IC Title on the line against him tonight, as Randy wanted to be the third person to ever hold the WWE Title and IC Title. Jeff agreed. Orton said Jeff was fresh out of brothers to kick in the head, which made Jeff even angrier- hell take his title at the Rumble.

-Tonight, Flairs career is on the line against William Regal. We see Vince put the storyline in motion two months ago.

-Ashley, Maria and Mickie came out for six-diva tag action, next!

[Break]

(1) Ashley, Maria & Mickie James vs. Melina, Jillian & Beth Phoenix
We got all the heel entrances, instead of joining the match in progress after break. Ashley got whipped into the corner but missed the buckle. She clotheslined Melina and tagged Maria. Some sloppy work by those two so Melina went for the old-fashioned choke. Mickie got some offense on Beth and took out the heel team. Thesz press from the top and the crowd is finally awake. All six women hit the ring and four soon rolled to the outside. Beth hung Mickie on the top rope and hit the Fisherman suplex for the win.

Winners: Melina, Jillian & Beth at 3:31. Match was just brutal.

-Backstage, Vince told Regal he was confident hed beat Flair tonight. Regal said hed end Flairs career in the most undignified way possible. Vinces gift to him was an enema to get some cheap heat, using the Bret Hart give American an enema line and said theyd put it in Mobile, Alabama. Vince mentioned hi-def; speaking of which, Snitsky walked in and wanted to make an impact; Vince gave him an opportunity, in a match against Triple H tonight.

[Break]

-Last year, HBK & Taker were the final two in the Rumble. Taker won, and we got clips.

(2) Shawn Michaels vs. Trevor Murdoch- Royal Rumble Qualifying Match
Michaels got on the stick and complained about having to qualify for the Rumble. He said he didnt want to usurp the power of WWE. Sounds like comments hed make back in the 90s. HBK wanted to face Kennedy in a qualifying match, but got Murdoch instead. Trevor actually looks in decent shape, which ruins most of his uniqueness. He was all offense early on, getting a near fall within the first minute. Michaels retaliated with punches and a Thesz press. Flying forearm and inverted atomic drop followed. Murdoch dropped down on a superkick attempt, so Michaels locked in an inverted Figure Four for the submission victory.

Winner: Shawn Michaels at 2:56.

-KK came on the TitanTron and said HBK cant handle the fact that Kennedy beat him. KK doesnt want to face HBK next week because he has nothing to prove. But out of respect, hed give HBK his day in the sun next week. He called himself the present and future of sports entertainment. Murdoch snuck up on Michaels and got a superkick for his troubles.

-Two months ago, Flair took Orton to the limit. His career is on the line tonight against William Regal.

-Tonight, JBLs second coming to RAW.

[Break]

-Clips of WMVI- Hogan vs. Warrior, title vs. title. A nice touch. Tonight, Hardy faces Orton in a similar situation.

-JR and King ran down the Royal Rumble card.

-Hornswoggle and Vince were backstage, as it sounded like the crowd let out a collective groan. Vince wanted to give Hornswoggle some experience in a RR-like match, so hes having a mini-version of it tonight Hornswoggle will be number one, with Mr. Kennedy second, Mankind third, Batista fourth, and then some surprises. Vince said if hes successful, he may have a shot at the Rumble, but conceded it wasnt very likely. Then he grabbed Horny by the throat and threw him into the couch and said, Youre a McMahon- anything is possible. With the way Hornswoggle has been treated like a child throughout this angle, this segment was more than a little uncomfortable.

-Trips, walking backstage, faces Snitsky next!

[Break]

(3) Triple H vs. Snitsky
The two worked each other over in the corner, but Trips exploded out with a clothesline. Snitsky just ran into Trips, but his momentum on a charge took him out of the ring.

[Break]

Snitsky worked over Trips with a boot, then some shoulders in the corner. Sidewalk slam by Gene. Pin attempt got two. Two elbowdrops got a two count. Trips fought back but got caught in a bearhug. Man, Triple Hs skin looks real yellow compared to Snitsky. Trips snuck out of a pump-handle slam and hit a DDT. Spinebuster, but Helmsley got dumped over the top on a Pedigree attempt. Snitsky missed a shot with the stairs, and Triple H went low to draw a DQ.

Winner: Snitsky by DQ at 10:06. Not too bad, I guess.

-Triple H used the sledgehammer and hit the Pedigree post-match. A restaurant-quality sledgehammer shot by The Game, remarked JR. Huh?

-As Trips headed to the back, Vince was on the Titan Tron. McMahon advised Trips to calm down. Triple H took the sledgehammer and pierced the screen near the entrances. Fireworks went off to make it seem more violent than it was.

[Break]

-Smoke was still billowing out of the small TitanTron and we saw what just happened.

-Triple H walked up to an enraged Vince backstage. Vince said he couldnt trust Tripsso he put him back in the Rumble match.as long as he wins his match next week. No opponent was given.

-The WWE Rewind was Jericho and JBLs brawl two weeks ago.

-JBL came out. More balloons fell from the sky. When he finally got the mic, he asked Y2J how his neck was. We then saw highlights of last weeks beating. Wheres your savior now? asked JBL. He said when he dragged Jericho around it was like he was dragging every one of the fans with him. JBL addressed Jerichos children, telling them that their father was a coward and gutless. He then said he didnt want to make it personal. He wanted Jericho to tell his kids he gives up. If he comes to the Rumble, JBL said the savior is going to need saving.from him. Excellent promo.

-Randy Orton faces Jeff Hardy for the IC Title tonight, but next, its the Mini-Rumble!

[Break]

-No Mercy 2002 saw Triple H vs. Kane in a title vs. title match. Triple H left as IC and World Champ.

(4) 5 Man Mini Royal Rumble
30 second intervals here. Hornswoggle was #1. Kennedy #2.only it was mini-Kennedy. The mic dropped, but he was too short to reach. Apparently, its not over-the-top rules. After a clothesline and dropkick, Horny got dropped into the buckle. Mini-Mankind was next. I hope he does the loud selling too! Ah, nope. Socko was brought out by Mankind, but Hornswoggle blocked it and threw him out. Horny impressively press-slammed Kennedy out over the top. Mini-Batista was next, with fireworks. Spear by Batista. No powerbomb, back-drop instead by Horny. Honrswoggle almost eliminated himself. Mini-Kane was #5. Big uppercuts from Kane and a spinebuster from Batista. Batista Bomb on Kane. Shot to the groin by Hornswoggle and Batista was thrown out. Kane went to the middle rope and hit a clothesline. Chokeslam didnt work, so Horny hit the Celtic Cross and Kane was tossed. Khalis music hit.and the real version came out. Meanwhile, Batista came back in and assaulted Hornswoggle. Finlay came in with the shillaleigh and Khali rolled out of the ring. He came back in and wrestled the shillaleigh away from Ranjin Singh. I guess thats a win for Hornswoggle.

Winner: Hornswoggle at about 7:00. No bell.

[Break]

-Technical difficulties greeted us out of break, so we got a WWE In HD ad.

-Finlay was pissed at Vince backstage, but McMahon said he had nothing to do with Khali coming out. Finlay again referenced a deal between the two, but Vince told him never to talk about it. He then told Finlay to take out his frustrations on Khali on Smackdown.

-Ric Flair and William Regal made their entrances.their match is next.

[Break]

(5) Ric Flair vs. William Regal- Career-Threatening Match
The match was joined in progress at 10:52. Flair was on the outside, but grabbed Regals leg and wrapped it around the ring-post. Chop block by Flair back inside and the figure-four was applied. Regal got to the ropes. Roll-up by Regal, but referee Marty Elias saw Regal using the tights for leverage. Flair then rolled Regal up and used the tights for the three-count.

Winner: Flair, 2:06 shown.

-Regal yelled at Elias back in the ring as Flair walked up the ramp.

-Split-screen showed Hardy and Orton walking backstage: the main event is next!

[Break]

-Next week, RAW goes HD with Michaels vs. Kennedy in a rubber match. Also, Triple H faces an unknown in what is now being billed as a Royal Rumble qualifying match.

(6) Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy, Intercontinental Title Match
Hardy got right in the ring and Orton decked him with a low-blow for the DQ.

Winner: Hardy by DQ at :09.

-Orton said the show wasnt over- he threw Hardy under the rope to the outside. He pulled up the ringside mats, but Hardy fought back. They fought up the ramp and Orton threw him off the metal of the Tron. Orton set up to kick hardy in the head, but ended up get back-dropped off the stage. It was a relatively short fall compared to others. As refs checked on Orton, Hardy climbed one of the metal railings and hit the Swanton onto Orton. They obviously didnt show the impact, but Hardy was sprawled over Orton when they did show inside the landing area. Medics worked on both men as the announcers were silent for the last few minutes. Agents Mike Rotunda, Johnny Ace and Rick Steamboat were out as well. Both spots were replayed and Jeff raised his arm to the fans as he was stretchered out.

Too bad HHH had to get DQ'd against Flair to set up those huge repercussions about him getting kicked out of the Rumble.

I feel so bad, but I loved the mini-royal. That was a better use of my 8 minutes than the 15 I lost on Snitsky.

Ranking the minis:
Entrance:
1) Kennedy
2) Batista
3) Kane
4) Mankind

In-Ring:
1) Batista
2) Kane
3) Kennedy
4) Mankind

Im not convinced that mini-Mankind has ever seen a Foley match.

It seems like ever since Kennedy got the clean W over Michaels that he just seems more motivated and confident, which does wonders for his credibility. Lets see what happens next week though before I totally buy into him.

There is nothing crueler than coming back from the break and realizing that we missed 3-4 minutes of chain wrestling between Flair and Regal. But if Flair cant get a figure four tapout from even William Regal, then this angle doesnt have a lot of hope of truly lighting on fire. Regal has the whitest ass since, well, probably me.

As far as bait-and-switch main events go, Orton delivering the mega-ballshot 3 seconds in was pretty fabulous. When Orton gets the win, no one can complain because they have built Jeff up and incredible amount. I just hope Hardy gets something major at Mania, beyond just a Money in the Bank. [Note this was all typed prior to THE CRAZIEST FUCKING THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. I was SURE there was no way they would actually deliver the Swanton. Jesus Christ I cant believe I just saw that for free.]

Now, this is where you would need the 'Bill Watts Banned Top Rope Rule' to come into play, with Orton getting it plugged into the match and Hardy trying to find a way around it. Perhaps a ref bump where he could set up a ladder someplace and do something sick, but end up getting caught going to the well twice by the ref by doing a top rope move, thus building up Hardy but not giving him the belt.
I guess the smaller screen on the ramp wasn't an HD screen, but is the large TitanTron HD? Just remember though: Vandalism and destruction of property does pay in the world of Vincent Kennedy McMahon.
The Flair angle really has no juice. They should have had him start at the bottom and work his way up, rather than working from the top on down. Can't even give him promo time because it would just be the same promo due to the stipulation. Good idea in theory, not good long term idea in practice.
I want Steamboat vs. Flair 1 more time.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

You couldn't be more wrong. The more they build Hardy up like this, the more Vince needs to pull the trigger and switch the title. The fans are ready to accept Hardy as a main eventer, and putting Orton over him clean would do nothing more than kill Hardy's momentum completely dead and render him WWE's version of Monty Brown in TNA. With all the main event talent on RAW (Orton, Trips, HBK, Jericho, JBL, Lashley when he comes back, etc.) it's now or never for Jeff.

They don't need to have Orton go into WM as champ because they've got Edge to main-event the show right there, especially since the Rumble is looking like a second win for either Batista or the Undertaker. Put Jeff over at the Rumble and book him against HBK for WM, toss all the main event talent into the MITB match, and let Orton the Legend Killer retire Flair. That's the way I'd do it.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

I laughed at MiniKennedyKennedy's entrance for a good five minutes.

They could've done a much better job of destroying the TitanTrapezoid. Who was it that drove a truck through it last time, Austin? Compared to that, HHH hitting a sheet with a sledgehammer and the lame-ass pyro....just weak.

Hardy's bump was nice to see on free TV, but it's nothing we haven't seen tens of times before. Let's hope that we see something we've never seen at the Rumble...namely Hardy as champ.

Since both are just rear projection screens, the screens themselves shouldn't matter as much as the projector, which can just be swapped out. The big reason for the mayhem is, according to an AVS Forum thread where a poster contacted a WWE production guy that has a blog (first hand information!!!) Raw and ECW get brand new sets for the HD launch next week (and maybe SmackDown; he didn't say.)

Yea, breaking the set is usually a definite sign of a new one next week. But it was cooler when Rhyno gored Jericho thru it and it was (somehow) less fake when Show pulled down the big screen so Austin could cut it up.

Geemoney is right about Trevor Murdoch. He is now just another guy, and actually is looking a bit like Cade.

A good Raw show with an incredible ending. The final shot of Hardy with his arm raised was awesome. I don't know what they can do next week that will come close to this. Dueling "medical facility" promos?

Prediction: Next week Triple H has to face JBL to get into the Rumble.

I love that Vince was just walking around with an enema backstage for no reason. Why not.

How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

I was hoping you'd say that so I wouldn't have to. Thanks!

The only problem with Hardy's final "holy shit" moment is someone had the misfortune of framing the shot so that we saw that there was yet ANOTHER level of scaffolding/ledge above Hardy's head, so it was all "oh man he didn't go EVEN HIGHER"

But then, there was an awful lot of weirdness technically this week. Once Kennedy's promo started and they realised they had timecodes up on the screen, you could kinda feel them panic - should we look at Michaels the whole time? Should we try to reframe the video screen? If only we could stop this thing and start over, but that ruins the whole "we swear this wasn't pretaped" kayfabe....but we've already ruined it with that damned timecode....ohhhhhhhhhhh oh oh oh.

You kinda wonder if there was some simultaneous "test HD" stuff going on tonight. I kinda wonder how it'll look NEXT week. I'm so glad all these HD channels mysteriously appeared on our lineup during December! (I'm so glad we bought an HDTV last summer!)

That "if America needed an enema..." line is bordering on overuse, though. Lazy writers are the worst kind of writers! (I should know!)

I would sure hope they taped Jeff's dive in HD, since they'll be using on their HD shows for a long time.

I didn't figure this out myself, but it was pointed out to me this morning that the Vince/HHH/sledgehammer bit was supposed to be a homage to the Apple commercial doing 1984. I wonder if Hunter is hoping for a ultrathin laptop at Macworld today!

it has been 10 years, so I guess they can rip off one of the best lines ever. Bret even said on his doc that he didn't want to say it, so obviously the writers at that time (Russo?) came up with it.

How in the world does Jeff top that spot at the RR?? He may kill himself trying. I still think there is no way he gets the belt, unless it is a short 2 week reign, and Randy gets the belt back before Mania. Although, I would love to see Jeff-HBK for the belt in a ladder match at WM 24, we are only kidding ourselves if we think HHH isn't getting the belt at WM.

But just going by his efforts over the last few weeks, as well the crowd reactions, he deserves a win at the Rumble. He may be the most over guy on the roster right now.

Hardy's leap was impressive but give me Shane McMahon's 50-70 foot leap on the Big Show anytime over it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agXhK8UrsDU

Other than the main event, it was a so-so show really. They really need to hire another female wrestler to compete with Beth Phoenix, there's plenty in Japan to pick from.
