And the Hall of Fame Shawon-O-Meter finishes at .002
Congrats to the Goose, and to Jim Rice as well.. with one last chance next year, I'm pretty sure no one's ever got that close, and not subsequently made it in. No problem with either of those candidacies here, and I'm solidly behind Dawson and Blyleven, as well as Alan Trammell.
I think the surprise here is that McGwire got no bounce at all. I was figuring there was a lot of "no way we make him a first ballot 'famer" sentiment, but looks like there were no new votes at all. That's not good news for Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, et al.
Although I think as people figure out how widespread the performance enhancing has been in the last generation, a lot of these guys will have better prospects down the line. Possibly not McGwire, since when you put his numbers into the offense-inflated steroids/small parks/depleted pitching era - he looks more and more like a latter day Dave Kingman to me.
For reasons of creative incompetence, this space will be left blank. Advertising opportunities are avaliable though!!! Contact (Number removed due to pending litigation) for details!
It's one thing to be selective but another to be elitist. The writes are really starting to lose credibility. Was McGuire even mentioned once in the Mitchell report. I know it's not the final word and he acted bad in front of Congress but c'mon.

This would, if anything, make things much worse. Then you'd get old-timers on the veterans committee inducting old teammates and buddies with pathetically non-HOF stats.
How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

Or not letting anyone in, like they've been doing lately.

And that's a good thing. Considering how many looks anyone being considered by the VC has had by this point they should be electing very few people. When you've been considered and rejected 20 or more times like many of these guys have been, they probably should be done by that point, instead of hanging around and getting in because they're the best of who is left out.
