Pandas are people too!!

Man, I have too many comics. *slap* what am I saying??? You can never have enough comics, unless you work at Mile High Comics' warehouse like I used to and have seen the stacks, upons stacks, upon STACKS of Bloodstryke comics on PALETTES. Its a scary warehouse....anyhooo.

Go check out that Taskmaster limited series. Good shit.

I seriously came to tears laughing so hard at the last Deadpool book. Shrunken Rhinos and Dazzler! Oh man, talk about a good dose of randomness.

The Authority finished up it's last run, and you mean to TELL ME that Art Adams (my God of comics) couldn't finish the last issue?? What does he do besides play with Godzilla toys?!?! But in all fairness, we ARE talking about the man who Joe Maduriera based his career on.

Hawkman rules. So does Flash. And Batman: Gotham Adventures. JLA's not bad too. But what do all these titles have in common?? They're put out by DC right? And DC has some gay affinity for doing an annual crossover that bugs the SHIT OUT OF ME to NO END. Fuck Joker's Last Laugh or whatever it was. Marvel dropped their's. Dark Horse and Wildstorm haven't done them in years. ABC NEVER does them. GIVE THEM UP DC!!! Man, Bruce Wayne is some fucking murderer/fugitive, but I SWEAR NOTHING is being done to SOLVE what the fuck is happening in this crossover! The last issue of Detective dealt with some stupid ass Yakuza Monster. WTF?!?! I liked the book SOOOOO much better when Greg Rucka wrote about the GCPD... it was MUCH better then. Anyhoo...stop crossovers. Support your local story arc or self contained comics.

Next week Raven's issue of Tangled Web comes out. Should be interesting. Here's the scoop: " What really bit Peter Parker after that spider sunk its radioactive fangs into him? The wrestling bug! Looking for a way to cash in on his newfound abilities, the boy who'd one day be Spider-Man stepped into the squared circle to face off against one of the most feared men in the business: Crusher Hogan! And we all know the outcome of that match -- or do we? So forget Spider-Man -- what's Hogan's story? Just how many lives are affected by some kid innocently looking to make some easy money?" I love this series. Seriously, its one of the best books to come out in years. Except for that retard Zimmerman's issue. DIE MONKEY!! Anyways, it looks like Raven is going to give us some really cool insight into the Hogan character. Something that's NEVER been done, and to have it come from a wrestler who really loves comics just makes it that much sweeter.

Well ladies and germs, next year's comic movies (Save Constantine...hollywood bastards) look awesome. http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com has some good tidbits on the HULK and X-MEN 2. All I'm gonna say about X-Men 2 is: BAMF!! Go read the column about it, there's not a whole LOT of spoilers, just enough to make you DROOL. Hulk will be reportedly FIFTEEN feet tall. And Jennifer Connelly ah, rounds out the movie oh so well. Daredevil by all reviews sounds to be an AWESOME flick despite the oddball casting. Road To Perdition (one of DC's graphic novels) looks to be a good sleeper, like From Hell (which I got on DVD. AWESOME). Think Lone Wolf & Cub but in 1920's chicago in the Mob. Not to mention the last two Lord of the Rings Movies will rule.

And alas...a darker subject, Posers. I was at one of my many fun indy wrestling shows that I usually do writing/ announcing for. And off to my right I noticed an "actress" if that's what you want to call her for a local *ahem* adult distributor/sponsor "Pleasures." And what was she wearing?? A Spider-man shirt of course. So she sits next to us and I ask her if she's seen the movie and she says yes, she saw it with her friends and she liked it. And I asked her if she's ever read the books. Then with her blonde little nymphette bimbo reply she dryly says "No, comics are for fucking dorks." And then my bloodpressure shoots to "HULK SMASH BIMBO BITCH" And then she slyly asks what I do for a career....and I answer, " Well right now I do advertising/web design...but for my career I plan on drawing COMIC BOOKS!" Then she got all shy and apologetic for some odd reason. lol...anyhoo...to make my point...doncha just hate seeing the guys who beat you up for reading comics in high school wearing a Spidey shirt or a Decepticon Shirt?? This ladies and gentlemen, is why I hate everyone. Flamin posers.

Oh well, READ CAPTAIN MARVEL!! Do IT!!!

Mebbe someone can explain this to me. Why is the Authority such a hot book? Back in the early 90s, ultra violence was in. You had Image doing Spawn, Shadowhawk, Savage Dragon, Bloodworks and hordes of other books now lining warehouse shelves (no surprise on the Bloodstryke comics there...). DC had Lobo, Marvel had the Punisher. Heroes who kill were in vogue. Now, we have the same type of thing in the Authority.

Call me old fashioned, but heroes shouldn't kill. They should only kill if its absolutely necessary. Heroes who kill routinely just don't have much of a moral centre. There is no respect for morality there. When a hero kills, you should feel something: shame, sadness or redemption. I recall some of the best comics I have read involve a hero crossing that line. The finale of the Golden Age. Kingdom Come. Crisis on Infinite Earths. The deaths mean something.

When I read the Authority, I don't get that sense. Instead I feel sick to my stomach.

Comments? Bueller?

I would argue (and have for that matter) that 1980s/1990s "anti-hero violence" is different than contemporary "meta-violence."

To me, the brand currently practiced, most effectively (good and bad) written by Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis, is typical of the desensitization of the popular culture. It's so over the good than it's not really even the same.

If I get the chance, I'll expound later.

(Can you tell I used to be an academic and this is something I gave a paper on?)

Well, you see the nice thing about the Authority is that it has some good subtle points and some even better funny points. While I'm no Warren Ellis fan by any means (a later rant I'll save that for) but Mark Millar's vision was hands down the better part of the Authority. Well, until it got to that silly part with the "fake" Authority and the book was so damn late I felt like the guys in that scene from the Holy Grail screaming "Get on with it!!"

But I digress...the characters in the Authority really carried over from Stormwatch, and with a lot of people, if you didn't go through the last phase of Stormwatch you never really got the reasoning for being so violent. But Mark Millar put it rather clear in his storyline and I liked that. Here's where the satire/criticism of mainstream super comics come to play. JLA, JLI, Avengers...WHATEVER...all had "certain" loyalties whether it be to the U.N. or the USA. Mark Millar brought up a concept where ALL governments were corrupt, the Authority knew about it, and when the U.S. president asked them to stop doing what they were doing because it was ruining it for the political fat cats in Washington. Then Jack Hawksmoor basically told the Pres to fuck off and they went on their own way until the governments went and did something. And yes, it was violent, but that helped drive home the story a little bit more. The Governments were so ruthless in their campaigns to get the young Jenny Quantum and kill the Authority itself that the extreme violence seen in the Authority was the only way to stop the adversaries.

And to be perfectly honest with you, I've never felt desensitised by any comic or anime. I still get squeemish when I accidentally land on that stupid surgery channel. And there's still stuff I cringe at during movies. Black Hawk Down anyone??

And yeah, meta-violence is quite different from anti-hero violence. Its more uncensored and in mass doses, but its not sweeping the ENTIRE medium like the anti-hero stuff. The ones pulling the meta-violence have a certain callousness about them that scarily everyone has wanted to give into sometimes. And sometimes, its just funny. IE: Preacher.

As much as I liked Authority (since I guess we can refer to it now in past tense), I thought the end of Stormwatch Vol 1 was the best thing done with the whole bunch of characters.

It was also the beginning of Ellis' archetype/doppelganger fixation, since he's done at least 3 different versions of "the JLA" now.

Then, it was new and fresh. Now, it seems tired.

I guess, I like books like Authority and Planetary in moderation, but still prefer "clean/retro" books like JSA or the Flash. But hey, I'm an old man. :>

I told myself I wouldn't get into this thread because of the initial post, but I couldn't resist any longer.

If there is one word I would NOT use to describe The Authority, it's "subtle."

Uhm, the current incarnation of the JLA answers to no one. They protect the world from the moon.

That's funny, I thought the main theme of Millar's Authority run was that the book focused on Apollo and Midnighter being gay and everyone that attacked them did so because they (the attackers) were homophobes or gay bashers.

I'm with Mark, here. The Flash is the finest superhero book being published right now. And it's written, along with the aforementioned JSA, by the most talented young writer in comics.

The "Daredevil" casting wasn't too oddball. The only thing I worry is Micheal Clarke Duncan as Kingpin,It may be a little hard to replace a HUGE white guy with a HUGE black guy but causal fans won't care, only fanboys(like me)will.I think Jennifer Garner was a great choice to play Elektra she's extremely HOT right now.All the other cast members are solid.

Now to the posers,If something is big it reaches to all points of the universe,so with Spider-Man making a ZILLION dollars at the box office,It has became popular. Therefore, any person wanting to be popular will wear the Spidey shirts and people who liked it before it came popular will be ridiculed.A lot of people who saw the movie probably never knew it was a comic book in the first place or ever read a comic book(or any other book). This year preppy, kids will be wearing Spidey shirts with their Abercrombie khaki shorts,no doubt

Well anyway,I'm done

If I was in charge of everything, Marlon Brando would be playing the Kingpin. Cause he's big, fat and white. Only downside, is that he can't move much... because he's big and fat and old.

Maybe if they claim to be a fan of the comic books. People aren't allowed to like comic book-spinoff movie without reading the comic series first? I have never read an issue of spiderman (or any other comics you guys have mention), but I still enjoyed the movie. I never claim to be an expert on the series, but I can say I loved the movie. I am a "poser"?

Maybe I should start acting like a panda in mocking defense of an animal protection angency I didn't even know existed 6 months ago. THAT THERE is legitimate fandom.

BucsFan, when you start preaching about how GAY comics are and comics fans, and then start preaching about how much you love comic movies and whatnot, then you're a hypocrate...not a poser. But a poser is a special kind of hypocrate, so I guess they're both true.

I still disagre with that. A non-comic book example. I am a big fan of author John Grisham. I read the book the Rainmaker and loved it, but I didn't think the movie was very good. At least, it didn't do the book or Grisham justice. My Dad, on the other hand, hated the book, and in fact hates everything Grisham writes and says he doesn't understand how anyone can read it. But he LOVED that movie. And this is OK because a movie (or television) serves a different purpose and appeals to differen people than a book (or a comic) does. That's not to say you can't like both, but movies are designed to reach the kind of person who won't sit down and read. In most cases, though I can't speak for spiderman because I don't read it, a spinoff movie will be very different from whatever it is spinning off of, or at least have several unique elements that make it something different from what inspired it.

For example, someone can like the movie Spiderman bit not the comic Spiderman because they can't (or don't want to have to) use their imagination. They look at a comic book and see a bunch of small pictures and words. No movement, action, etc. because they don't picture it and consequently aren't interested enough to get caught up in the story. But they can go watch the movie, and all their thinking is done for them and laid out on a big screen.

PANDAS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!!

Well let me be frank. First off, "Buc" as a student of debate throughout high school, especially on animal rights, I full well know what the WWF is. Thanks. But maybe you can go and pretend to NOT make asumptions for once? And no my background will not go away. T.S.

And the JLA can protect the World from the Moon all they want. Never changed or will change the fact that they'll still work with governments from time to time. They worked with the U.S. Government quite a bit during the early Morrison run. But you still have a point, JLA is still one of the best written books around. Action Comics is as well. I'll give it all to Joe Kelly. He's an excellent writer, and pretty damned funny.

The part about posers was more geared towards the jerks from high school/college. Anyone can enjoy and watch Spider-Man all they want. They can go read the comics all they want too...I wish they would. Comics need more readers. BUT, its more than irritating when some asshole who slapped you around for reading Spider-Man and watching the animated series comes around gushing about the movie and wearing Spider-Man shirts. NOW that I've made my point a little clearer, are you happy?

I never said you hadn't heard of it. I said I hadn't. Looking back it did sound like I was saying that, but I didn't mean it that way.

That said, I still think the whole Panda thing is stupid and I bet that background will be gone soon whether you want it to be or not.

Ah gotcha.

Well while we're ahead, I'm calling a cease fire. Its ridiculous for us to be arguing like this.

And Tripod sucks. If I'd have known that on every computer but mine, my background was showing up as some stupid Tripod logo I'd have fixed it sooner. My bad on that one. Hopefully this one works now.

I would think that everyone on this board would be used to a cute girl calling them a dork by now. Everyone but me, of course.

With that said, I'd just like to point out that The Spider Man movie moves exactly like the old comics did, and therefore I think anyone who enjoyed the movie would enjoy the comics. Raimi seems to have a knack for comic book style pacing in movies, as Darkman moves just like an old comic, too.

lol...you've got a point there. Well except for me too of course.

Anyhoo...yeah wasn't it paced well??? It really felt like reading a comic, and I think that's why it felt so comfortable. That and seeing the Goblin on his glider come around Times Square for the first time gave me a big ol' grin. It felt just like a comic shot.
