No champagne for the '72 Dolphins this year.

ESPN - Pats' year of perfection capped by thrilling comeback win over Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- With one mighty heave, Tom Brady and Randy Moss took care of the record books. Now it's down to business for the unbeaten New England Patriots: stamping themselves as the greatest team in NFL history.

The Patriots completed a perfect if somewhat joyless journey through the regular season Saturday night, finishing with a remarkable 16-0 record following a thrilling 38-35 comeback victory over the New York Giants.

New England became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on the schedule, and that one was only 14-0. This victory required a comeback from a 12-point deficit engineered by the brilliant Brady, and smashed the Patriots' league mark for consecutive victories.

The Giants gave them a hell of a game...for three quarters. Then the coach turned back into a pumpkin and they became the Giants again. Stupid penalties (I'm looking at YOU, Amani Toomer!) and a poorly-timed Eli Manning INT doomed the Giants and the Pats go undefeated. I was astounded that as soon as the Toomer holding penalty happened, I could see the Eli pick coming. Sure enough, it came on the very next play.

The playoffs should be interesting. The Pats ran the table, but they didn't look dominant in doing so. Colts and Jaguars fans should be stoked after watching this game tonight, because it shows that the Pats are very much beatable. Hell, with the way they've been playing recently, even the Chargers are capable of knocking them off.

Final tally of records broken:
Most Points in a Season: 589 (previously held by '98 Vikings)
Most Receiving TD's in a Season: 23 from Randy Moss (previously held by Jerry Rice)
Most TD Passes in a Season: 50 from Tom Brady (previously held by Peyton Manning)

Nice to see the Giants defense continue the Strahan Era tradition of not being able to get a big stop in a big game once they went up a dozen. Conversely, I now have more faith in the Giants against Tampa after a defeat than I would had they knocked off the Patriots, as the Giants cannot handle prosperity and would have been ripe for a 27-3 type letdown game against the Bucs.
I didn't know tight ends were actually allowed to catch balls thrown their way. Why hasn't Shockey received that memo?
For a veteran, Amani has made numerous bad plays down the stretch of the season. I was actually expecting the strip sack of Manning after the hold instead of the pick though.
And, to add onto the list of records, Patriots break their '03-'04 record of 18 consecutive regular season victories with their 19th consecutive regular season victory. Difference though is they had 21 overall victories in the 18 regular season victory streak, while in this 19 game streak they had the loss after blowing an 18 point lead in the AFC Title Game.

The back to back Brady to Moss plays might have been the biggest mood swings I have ever experienced. I'm talking Dr Jekyll/ Mr Hyde type of stuff.

Faulk was huge and played his best game ever.

Welker was all over the place and his inside block on the Maroney TD was just awesome.

Now it's time to get the trophy!

The Giants should be ashamed for that awful, awful clock management at the end of the game. It took them, what, four minutes to go halfway down the field for a touchdown with under five minutes to go?

Um, in what, like five out of the 16 games? NE has already beaten the Colts in Indy, so they can definitely beat them in New England. The jury's still out on Jacksonville. And there is no way barring injury that San Diego could possibly beat the Patriots at Gillette.

Nope, the New England streak will continue all the way to the Super Bowl...where it gets snapped by Brett Favre.

This has been a fun season to watch the Patriots. It seems like I've seen over half of their games this year.

I'm hoping they can run the table - and it's going to be interesting to watch how this all plays out.

I would love to see San Diego beat them, but I don't think it will happen.

Like the Ravens before them, the Giants found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And what WAS up with their clock management at the end? Manning just seemed to be accepting defeat, and running out the clock so they could hit the showers.

I hate the Patriots, but it does boggle the mind the way they can just turn it on in the second half and completely dominate anyone.

I don't think GB gets past the Cowboys. Would be nice to see Favre have one last super bowl run though, but even if GB did get there against the Pats, I don't see them winning. The only team I think that has a legit shot to beat NE is the Colts.

But wait, all the sportswriters and radio guys have been telling me jacksonville could be the team to beat NE or Indy and "no one wants to play them".

Despite the fact that they say this EVERY year about Jacksonville and they NEVER come through.

But this year's different! First off... uh... well, Byron Leftwich isn't on their roster?

Jax not playing half the team might have something to do with that. Also, the Texans are secretly awesome this year.

Doesn't Jax still have to go to either Pittsburgh or San Diego and win in those places first? You think these so-called "experts" on the networks would know these things before they speak? I can't see the Steelers losing to them again in their own place, and the Chargers aren't going to be easy for them either.

As the Macho Man would say, "Ohhh Yeah!"

What a season, and it ain't over yet!

(Did NFL Network show way more commercials than a typical network broadcast, or did it just seem that way?)

I'd bet on the Cubs to win back to back World Series titles before I bet on the Jags to win the Super Bowl. They are just a terrible team in the clutch, year in and year out.

A team went undefeated through an entire season, and it's the Patriots. That boggles my frickin' mind, as does the fact that I wasn't the least bit surprised they came back last night.

Nor was I. As a life-long Giants (you know they were New England's team before the Patriots existed, don't you ), I had every expectation that they would cough up this game. As stated earlier, I am kind of glad the Giants lost, since beating the Pats would have been the highlight to their season and they would have lost to Tampa. Now I think they'll make it to lose to Dallas or Green Bay!

If you want to get technical Pieman, the Redskins were New England's team prior to the Pats and Giants (before they moved to Washington).

As for the Giants chances against TB, didn't Madison, the Giant's starting center, and a few other Giant players leave the game due to injuries?

Pieman should have known that, he was old enough to see them leave Boston back in '36...
