Unless Rodriguez is going to overhaul the offense he has used effectively the past few years, then he is going to have to really revamp the Michigan roster, which doesn't look like it was created to run the spread offense.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not a bad hire though. Just need to give him a few years to get the athletes he needs, or hope he can run a different style with what they have.

And West Virginia, no you can't have Jimbo. He said no and he meant it.

So, UM hires a coach whose team loses a game in September, starts a big win streak to move up in the rankings, and then blows its last game against its rival when a win would put them in the BCS game. This sounds so familiar.

Lloyd, you have a new protege. From an initial evaluation, this hire sucks. We're already beginning to regret the last West Virginia coach we pilfered. Yippee.

Wait, so you were ok with Schiano, but not with a guy who did a better coaching job in the same conference? A guy who took West Virginia, a team without anywhere close to the resources of Michigan, and made them relevant again?

I don't get you at all.

Funny, I didn't recall asking you to "get" me.

I wouldn't have been doing cartwheels over hiring Schiano if it had happened, either, but he wasn't expected to come in and blow up our entire offense and wasn't coming off a loss in which he was outcoached by Dave Freakin' Wannstedt and losing AT HOME to a 4-7 Pitt team. (Although I should be thankful, since LSU has a much better chance of beating OSU than WVU would have.) Now, the only QB on our roster after this season with any experience is rumored to be transferring because he doesn't fit into a spread offense.

Maybe it'll turn out well. My initial thought, though, is that I'll be reading headlines after a 3-4 start to next season about how it's going to take a few years to transition to Rodriguez's new offense. I saw that in the Nebraska papers after Callahan brought the West Coast there, too.

He wasn't outcoached, he lost his best and most important player to an injury in that game. At West Virginia they don't exactly have four star talent lined up all over the field or as backups like they do at Michigan(normally). In fact he never once got a top 25 recruiting class at West Virginia and that's not because he's a bad recruiter.

And the comparison to Callahan is a poor one. This is a coach who has proven he can do this at the college level year after year. Callahan had never been a college head coach before Nebraska and it clearly showed. That's not to say it won't take a year or two to get back on top, but I don't expect a losing season from him during that time no.

Pretty much everyone else I'm reading today is saying it's an awesome hire and Michgan fans should be dancing in the streets. At the very least you just got a coach who runs the type of offense that is kryptonite to Ohio State.

Not to mention things like this:

"How immediate was the ripple effect of Rodriguez's hire? The coach barely had time to inform the Mountaineers of his decision early Sunday afternoon before the nation's most coveted recruit, Jeanette (Pa.) native Terrelle Pryor -- a spread-option QB who'd reportedly narrowed his choices to Ohio State (the suspected favorite), West Virginia, Florida and Oregon -- told Scout.com, "Add Michigan to my list.""

Think what you want - I say Wannstedt outcoached him. If not for a few questionable calls along the way, the game wouldn't have been even that close. They still had Steve Slaton and barely even used him. A good "team" doesn't rely on one player to win, and I certainly hope Rodriguez's spread offense doesn't all hinge upon an athletic QB or Michigan's going to run into the same problems WVU did.

By the way, if you think Michigan has four-star talent at all of its positions, you haven't seen the secondary for the past 5+ years.

As I said previously, I HOPE this turns out well, but my initial opinion of the hire stands.

Well I do see that Michigan hasn't had worse than a top ten class in a long time so yeah they do have four and five star guys all over the place. Certainly a TON more talent than West Virginia has. It doesn't all hinge on one player at Michigan. It did at West Virginia because of that lack of overall talent. Slaton clearly was not the same player this season that he was prior(though I wonder if them losing Tricket had anything to do with that. hmmm). For the most part Rodriguez took lesser recruits and coached them up. Be interesting to see what he can do with real talent.

I will agree the spread sometimes is way too dependant on the QB, as I could see the Gators leaning far too much on Tebow this year and it hurt them. Course there's always the exception and his name was Vince Young but oh well.

But don't forget, just because he's the master of the spread doesn't mean he can't win by modifying it some. Just ask Urban Meyer who based his offense on Rodriquez's and yet modified it to win a national title with a QB that didn't fit the system at all in Leak.

I mean look at how quickly Illinois became a contender in the Big 10 using a version of the spread and that's with a guy that really isn't that good of a coach in Zook, just a great recruiter.

It's like you said before, there aren't exactly a ton of choices out there and I think they got the best man they could. Hopefully Michigan will get better fast cause I always liked them and I'm REALLY sick of Ohio State.

Thank you - it is heartening to read this. I keep hearing folks on other boards say, "You should root for the other Big Ten teams so the conference looks better!" Screw that, I'll root for the other teams, but I want to see scUM go down in flames. It's just nice to know there's someone else out there on the other side that feels the same way.

Good luck facing Florida! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

I am ecstatic by this hire.
A) It hurts West Virginia, so I can now laugh at my Mountaineer flag-flying neighbor.
B) It will force OSU to adapt to take on spread offenses.
C) If he's gotta retool the team offense, I can anticipate at least a few more years of Buckeye dominance.

In a related and unbelievable story, Nick Saban is trying to leave Alabama to take the West Virginia job.

Nope, not kidding...

Do you just type OSU or Cleveland into the search and comment on "whatever" pops up? I'm glad you hate "scUM"; I know Tressel is 6-1 against Michigan; Florida will probably kick UM's ass; and, yes, we are all witnesses. I get it.

SO, the consensus in Michigan is that a team losing to a division one program is somehow more disgraceful than loosing to a Division 1AA program? Is that right?

They got a decent coach, on the upswing of his coaching career. It's miles better than what they had this past season.

And, seeing as how the other big name coaches wouldn't touch the school with a ten foot pole, I'd be happy with the "third best" that Michigan got.

... the heck? All I was talking about was rivalry smack, not a personal attack on you. Sorry, didn't mean to piss you off like that. Thought you could take some good-spirited trash-talk.

In looking at your past posts, I don't comment on Cleveland/Ohio sports any more so than you do on Detroit/Michigan sports. I love sports, I love my home teams, and I'm excited for them 'cause gee, they're finally doing well now. So yeah, I tend to gravitate towards those topics. Believe it or not, I enjoy reading your posts 'cause I like to get some insight into what fans of rival teams are thinking, and you generally have rational, well-thought out posts.

Still hope Michigan loses, just like you hope OSU loses. Nothing freaking personal against you though, sheesh.

I don't know what's funnier, the fact that people are buying this story, or the fact that this story could possibly be true.

Hey there West Virginia, fuck off and stop trying to interview FSU coaches. Jimbo said no, and you can't have Tricket either.

And in FSU news I knew was coming a week ago but can't bring myself to face:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3159534

Around 20 players will miss the bowl and likely three games next season over the academic scandal crap from earlier this year. Fuck me.

We Wildcats have been eating Indians now for several thousand years. Seminole, however, is a rare and tasty treat that we shall feast on in Nashville. Meet the Chief Wildcat Wesley Woodyard:

If we lose it will be like same old Kentucky football! We are used to suffering! LOL! Although as bad as our basketball team is this year it may be more devastating to lose the bowl game than usual.

Well, last week's game was enteraining enough just based off of It's False signature pic. Tonight's game was exactly what I expected: a bit of a grinder that took some time to get going, but ended with a exciting conclusion in OT.
