i thought the avs thoroughly outplayed the wings in the first 2 periods yet somehow detroit managed to be tied. sometimes it looks like colorado is just in cruise control and there are times they decide it's time to score a goal and look absolutely unstoppable...almost scary.
i'm glad mccarty decided to step up after taking 5 years off. talk about a guy who used to play on the powerplay and be considered a vital cog to someone who is strictly a grinder. i guess he's considered a veteran and just about their only fighter with shanny since lapointe left, but he sure has disappeared. i'm glad they won this one so i don't have to worry about being down 2-0.

Marge: Mr. Scorpio, this house is almost too good for us. I keep expecting to get the bums rush.
Scorpio: We don't have bums in our town, Marge, and if we did, they wouldn't rush, they'd be allowed to go at their own pace.

When Patrick Roy gives up a lot of playoff goals in a game - he almost always comes back to slam the door shut in the very next game - I think we are going to see a very physical and low scoring game tonight - something like 2-1 or 3-2 and we are definitely going to see some OT......I would love for them to throw in a good old fashioned brawl that spills over into Game 3 out in Denver.....

Missed the OT last night when I had to put the kids to bed but caught the replay on ESPN2 this morning at 4:30am while I was on the NordicTrak - they should show OT games at that hour more often because I went faster & farhter than usual......with Sundin back and knocking off the rust - the Leafs look pretty damn good coming back up to Toronto

That has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a hockey game. Ever.

It took 15 years. In my last semester of school ever. But I finally did it. The kid who was supposed to barely finish high school has received an A minus average. This makes me want to go back home.....see all those teachers in high school, my former class mates. And eventually (if I ever see him again), my father. All those people who said I wouldn't cut it, that I'd be nothing. And that I probably wouldn't make it past high school. I want to see them all. And I will enjoy shoving all those comments down their respective throats with a hot branding iron.

I think this kind of illustrates why Roy is the better goaltender. He's got Stanley Cup Rings and Conn Smythe Trophies and Vezina Trophies. But he still feels he has something to prove. And he still wants to WIN.

I've never seen any kind of interview with Hasek that indicates to me that he's as much of a competitor. I agree, not having a Cup ring or a Smythe suggests he has more to prove. But neither his play nor the personality he shows in the media (even with a grain of salt) shows me that he feels that way. He's quite satisfied with himself.

I hope he's just as satisfied when he's retired with no rings.

Hasek does have an Olympic gold medal, which Roy will never get because he was too much of an arrogant bastard to play for Team Canada.

Well, that reason is also why Roy is driven. He chose not to play for Canada because he wanted to focus on helping the Avalanche. Right or wrong, he's in the thick of it now, and if Colorado didn't get past Detroit, he'd be the centre of the storm of questions.

Plenty of the greatest players ever to play never won a single medal, let alone gold, in World Championship or Olympic play.

Only recently did it even become possible for a North American to do both (Europeans have long had the option of defecting after already winning in International play).

I'm sure Roy would rather hear his name alongside other multiple Stanley Cup winners as Clint Benedict, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Glenn Hall, Bernie Parent, or even Billy Smith.

Meanwhile, off the top of your head, name me a goalie other than Vladislav Tretiak (granted, possibly the best ever, but how can anyone do a comparison?), who won multiple Olympic or World Championship gold medals since World War II and whose name can rightly be mentioned among those above? Even if you can, the average fan can't, I assure you.

Patrick Roy is a shrewd man who wants to craft his own destiny. Is he arrogant? Hell, yeah. But he's also a great goaltender. I think the two go hand in hand.

His argument was that the Canadian Olympic team didn't need him to win. He turned out to be right, but nobody's going to acknowledge that if he doesn't win a cup this year. I think such a motivated Patrick Roy is bound to defeat Dominic Hasek, especially if the series comes down to goaltending.

FWIW, last night's game took Roy to 40/56 in overtime games in the playoffs. That's better than 75%. I can't decide whether the best adjective for that is `obscene' or `absurd'. Hasek is now 12/23 in overtime playoffs. Roy's record is money goaltending at it's best. Hasek's merely human.

Further, with regards to International hockey, I can't think of an international hockey event where one has to win more than 6-8 games. And yes, the last 4 or so need to be in a row, but even assuming it's 8, that's only halfway to a Stanley Cup...

I got to see those hideous Charlotte Checkers sweaters a couple of weeks ago. It was like looking at a test pattern. Just UGLY.
