I'm without power at home, I'm without power at the office. Oddly enough, our internet is working at the office if you can find a PC that has emergency power.

We're safe and sound for now, but our roof is slowly tearing off on the side facing the wind gusts. It's a crappy roof and we were going to get it replaced anyway, but this is sort of sealing the deal.

Our roof has three layers as it has never been fully redone in the history of the house. The top layer is all that is coming off at this time, but I'm still not happy about it.

Our neighbor lost some trees and I almost hit a 60' pine tree on highway 101 last night when I was trying to get into the office.

Cell phones are down (Verizon and Cingular) and I can't get long distance out at the house. My local # seems to be able to make local calls.

Rivers are rising and the winds are going to be gusting up to 100mph until later tonight when the gusts will drop down to 70mph.

I managed to find a starbucks that was open

no pictures this year, i'll see what other people have and I'll post them later.

I'm going back up to my hill.

It's raining like CRAZY here. I was on my way into the new office this morning - first day after the big move - so I went a way I've been a hundred times, and right at S . 177th and Military I hit a HUGE puddle that launched my Corolla up over the curb, leaving me high-centered for about an hour while I waited for the tow truck.

Is there now going to be a bit of the house remodel budget dedicated to getting a portable generator to have on standby?

Hunker down, & stay safe!

Holy shite. It's just been really windy here, but there were a few power outages around the area. I was surprised everything was as clear as it was when I headed into work (around 1:30 PM... hush, you). Our gusts are only up to 50 MPH, those lightweights...

Well, I was going to buy a generator. I still probably will. I had heard that last year during the big storm that our house had power most of the time, so I was cautiously optimistic that I wasn't going to need one.

We ended up losing a decent portion of one layer of the roof on the south side of the roof. I need to call our insurance guy and find out what to do next.

Oddly enough, there were springs in my yard last night. No kidding - water was gushing out of the ground in spots. Very, very strange.

Yeah, I heard Alvarez talking on his podcast about how bad it was up in Seattle.

It must be mad for used-to-rain Seattle to set records.

It rained hard enough and long enough here to flood the Chehalis River, which has a TWENTY mile-stretch of I-5 closed in both directions. My boss drive to Portland for a Monday meeting down I-5 (approx. 180 miles) and had to come back today via Yakima, going I-84 to US 97 to I-90, about a 350 mile-trip.

We had 5.2 inches of rain in the first 24 hour period of the storm. It was pretty crazy... I had springs welling up in the hillside on my property because there was just so much water and no-where for it to drain.

The springs are gone, the power is back as of 10 pm last night, and everything is getting back to normal. Some people still don't have power in the north county here.

By the way, what is the difference between a storm that has hurricane strength winds and an actual hurricane?

Glad to hear everyone made it out okay, as it sounded very serious from the new reports.

We're about to get your left-overs. All eyes will be on fire-ravaged Malibu on Saturday, as the remnants of your storm is passing through over the weekend. We're hearing 1" to 3" of rain in a 24 hour period for Santa Barbara (Malibu is about an hour away) - if it's more than 1", there could be some serious problems in those fire damaged areas.

A hurricane is a cyclonic storm system with defined characteristics and like a typhoon except for the name. They start as tropical depressions and strengthen over the warm waters of the southern Atlantic. They have the defined eye, etc. Hurricane force winds are just that, winds of a strength comparable to a hurricane.

For me, the scariest part by far is that, "...they could not...understand the arguments of newspaper editorials..." More and more these days, public discourse in the mass media is becoming over-simplified and dumbed down.
