Planetary was ... originally intended to be a 24-issue bi-monthly series. However due to illness (writer Ellis) and other commitments (artist Cassaday), the series was put on hiatus between 2001 and 2003; it has since restarted and Ellis has announced that it will conclude with issue #27, which has still yet to be published.
However, in a recent dispatch on his mailing list, Bad Signal, Ellis confirmed that Cassaday would be getting back to the issue and (hopefully) finishing it sometime in early 2008.

Don't hold your breath. I've been suffering through having to restrain myself from buying the current trades with the thought that eventually they'll release a single "Omnibus" type volume of the entire series. It's also funny because I think this "final issue" issue has come up in a thread before (probably last year). ;)
I wasn't really thinking about an Omnibus-type trade (although that would be cool) but rather the fourth hardcover volume. I have the first three and it is annoying incomplete without a fourth. However, you are probably right that I shouldn't hold my breath. Given the ridiculous delays many people have totally lost interest in the series and drumming up enough interest for a new hardcover may be difficult.
