Possibly, as the number one pretender fell tonight in spectacularly bad fashion. Boy was that some horrible football by both teams. Just sloppy, yet again.

So wonderful to see this finally over. Now if we can just knock off BC and start to get LSU back up to the top where they seem to me they belong right now as much as any team does.

Have to wait until next Thursday when they go to Blacksburg to get rid of BC, who could be #1 at the time should Michigan State continue the trend and spring the upset on Ohio State.
Before thinking LSU is going to jump back to the top, do they have anything left in the tank after the last 2 weeks to face Auburn in what is definitely going to be a physical game.
With South Florida losing, does this mean the republic is safe? If you want to really throw the wacky factor into play, if the Pac-10 teams cannibalize themselves, the SEC teams knock each other around, BC remembers they are BC, Ohio State or Oklahoma gets picked off, and South Florida and West Virginia run the table, West Virginia could be in the BCS Title Game without winning the Big East. It's not as crazy as you would think if you consider that they are #9, #2 has lost, #3 isn't respected, and #'s 6-8 aren't considered sure things.

Anybody else think college football's top coaches met in secret during the off-season and decided they were going to throw enough games that the NCAA would be forced to institute a playoff system? If any more top 3 teams lose, I'll be sure of it.

The Rutgers defense was garbage in the first half, but I wouldn't say they played "horrible football." Ray Rice, for example, was as spectacular as ever. I'm kinda puzzled though as to what happened to Grothe. He went from Michael Vick/Tim Tebow 2.0 in the first half to Drew Bledsoe 2.0 in the second. Also, I love trick plays. Jeremy Ito's fake punt was so nonchalant I wasn't even sure if I saw it right.

But I agree with you on your first points. USF played sloppy as usual and this time it caught up to them. They'll probably lose another game or two before the regular season is over and their 15 minutes will be soon forgotten. Meanwhile, I'm quietly hoping we see a BC-Kentucky national championship game because, well, why not?

Wow, just keep on with your SEC loving and OSU hating. (edit) Thank you for the well-thought out response. That's cool, and here's hoping OSU can win out anyway. I'd be really interested to see if LSU and OSU met in the Championship game, to see if it's any more competitive.

Gotta agree though that BC is in for a fight against Va. Tech. If OSU can just win out, I'm a happy panda.

Well I look at it like this. If LSU beats Auburn this weekend, that means they'll have FOUR, count'em FOUR wins over top 25 teams with their one loss coming in triple overtime to a top ten team. Can anyone else out there even come close to that? It's not to diss other teams, so much as say wow look at what LSU is doing so far. Even if Ohio State wins out they can't touch that.

Course with this season it means they'll lose three in a row now, but we'll see.

As for what happened to Grothe StingArmy, Rutgers adjusted well. In the first half they kept blitzing and leaving him openings to run through. In the second, they would still blitz but leave a spy on him to keep him honest. Once they stopped him from running, and USF had no RB worth a damn, it was game over. He just can't pass well enough to win a game like that.

What I saw from Rutgers was smart play, in the second half, but just not a ton of talent apart from Rice. Very slow players they're got there and it showed. That team needs a few years of recruiting to be really good. But the coach surely has them on the right track. Other than both teams maybe needing a new special teams coach. Jesus.

Plus Alabama just got done thumping Tennessee so they very well could be Top 25 by the time LSU comes to town. Then LSU still has to win an SEC Championship game that is going to be against a top 10 team for sure.

People can complain about SEC lovers all they want but it's pretty obvious they're the best conference and anybody who says otherwise is an SEC hater. And if you're down on the SEC only because you're an SEC hater how can you really complain about SEC lovers?

The problem with a lot of SEC fans is that no matter WHAT happens it means the SEC ROOLZ~!~!!11~!!1!1!

For example, Stanford beats USC and Oregon State beats Cal, therefore USC and Cal and the Pac-10 are horrible with no really good teams compared to the SEC.

BUT, Vandy beats South Carolina and Mississippi State beats Auburn who beats Florida and the SEC is AWESOME with every team being just a different degree of AWESOME.

I'm not going to argue that the SEC isn't the best conference, and I think if you matched them up top-to-bottom with the other conferences the SEC would win a LOT of the games, but just last year when the bowl season rolled around Wisconsin beat Arkansas, Penn State beat Tennessee, and Auburn and South Carolina narrowly beat Nebraska and Houston. It's not like if you put an SEC team with anybody else they automatically roll over them.

I haven't seen anyone talking smack on the Pac 10 this year. In fact I'm someone who has doubted that conference for a long time but think they're clearly the second best in the nation this season. This is the first year I've felt like teams other than USC are legit, and several of them at that.

Sure die hard SEC fans are crazy. But me, I'm basically an ACC guy who likes watching good football, so that's why I support the SEC.

Speaking of pretenders, does Oklahoma when they leave Norman start to fall into that category? They need to drop into the mid-pack of 1 loss teams, not the top.
Farewell South Carolina, Kentucky and California. At least now Cal can't bitch about how they lost with their back-up QB screwing up.
You really have to wonder what would have happened if Michigan State didn't drop the fumble recovery inside the Ohio State 15 and had scored 3 defensive touchdowns in a minute.
Memo to Florida State: Play early games. Once the sun starts setting or it is nighttime, Bowden starts to think that he is missing playing Bingo with Myrtle, Gertrude and Co. and things go downhill. From all those Top 3 finishes in the late 80's/early 90's to now being #4 in Florida.
With the 1-loss teams now starting to narrow themselves, a question: What happens if Ohio State or BC run the table, and #2 has 2 losses? If they were to lose the BCS Title Game, they could argue they should be allowed at least 1 screw-up since the other team got 2.

I rewound my DVR a billion times watching the end of the LSU-Auburn game to make sure I actually saw what I thought I saw. Un. Real. Who cares which conference is the strongest? I can tell you right now which conference is the most fun to watch, and it sure as hell doesn't have a team from Berkeley in it.

(Note: Despite the ridiculousness of the end of this game, I'd like to note there should have been 4 seconds on the clock when the TD pass was caught, not just 1 second. But still, holy smokes.)

Well it lloks like to me when it is all said and done it will probably be Oklahoma vs LSU in the Dome for the BCS championship. I do not see either team losing and I believe Michigan will beat OSU this year. VA. Tech should handle Boston College this weekend. Boston College has not played anybody this season. S.C. will handle Arizona State.

No kidding. I think that's where most of the SEC love comes from anyway. The games are ultra-competitive, most of the teams are stocked with speed-galore, and there are tons of big offensive and defensive plays to go around. So, even losing teams look good in the process. Excuse the wrestling metaphor, but it's kind of like watching a 1980s Ric Flair match - doesn't matter who wins, they both end up looking good at the end of the night.

I tend to think bowl season is the only time you can really make a valid argument which conference is the best but, that aside, the SEC is hands-down the most entertaining. Even as a Michigan fan, I cannot stand watching Big 10 football outside of them. I could watch some combination of Florida/Auburn/LSU/Alabama/S. Carolina play every day of the week.

I'm not ready to commit on any teams right now. OU sure has looked bad against really bad competition this year. Sure they stepped up against Missouri, but the loss to Colorado and struggling against Iowa State doesn't give me a lot of confidence. The schedule shouldn't be hard, but who knows. I could see A&M or Tech pulling off an upset, or even Missouri/Kansas in the Big 12 title game. It's no sure thing there.

As for LSU, I think they will be there but it doesn't get a lot easier for them. Arkansas and Alabama still to go plus the SEC title game.

If Oregon didn't have so many injuries I'd be bigtime for them. I think if they win out, with games against Arizona State and USC in there, the BCS would easily keep them ahead of OU. I'd love to see Oregon/LSU play.

Looking at this weekend, who the hell knows. We could be in for another HUGE string of upsets:

1. Ohio State at Penn State - big potential here
2. Boston College at Virginia Tech - yep
3. LSU has a much deserved week off
4. Arizona State vs Cal - Cal's dropped off but could do it
5. Oregon vs USC - close call
6. OU has a week off
7. West Virginia at Rugers - Definite close matchup
9. Kansas at Texas A&M - Could see this being the end for KU
10. South Florida at UConn - probably not.

So in just the top ten you have two byes, one probably sure win in USF, and everyone else playing games they will really have to fight to win. In fact I'd say Ohio State, BC, Arizona State, Kansas and West Virginia are likely to lose even. Course now that I said it, none of that will happen. I'm not missing a second of these games this weekend though, just in case. And I didn't even mention Florida/Georgia or SC/Tennessee.

What you just pointed out is both the best thing and worst thing about a season of upsets like this one; there's no certainty. We can guess, we can have teams we like, but we won't be sure until the final BCS standings before bowl selection.

As for me, I don't buy the Pac-10 teams at all. They are great competition for themselves, and have good games aesthetics-wise, but I don't see them having a winning record against teams from the other BCS conferences. Stanford finally revealing USC as a fraud & UCLA beating Cal cemented this for me. I never understood from day one where all the hype for this year's USC team came from, so I'll set that aside. I bought into Cal. Their loss to Oregon State is easily, even now, attributable to a freshman QB making a gigantic rookie mistake. But losing to a horrible UCLA team? That's proof right there that, just like their styles of play, Pac-10 teams are all flash and style. Who have Pac-10 teams beaten besides themselves this year? A Nebraska team so bad the athletic director got fired? A Michigan team, and I say this as a lifelong diehard Michigan fanatic, that will get ripped apart by teams with effective offensive speed (which is nearly everyone else on a national level)? The Pac-10 is overrated. And no, no amount of arguing will change this Big 10 fan's mind.

Now when I say I'm a fan of the Big 10, I mean if I were to coach I'd subscribe to the Big 10 style of play offensively. Purely for watching them on TV, SEC games are the best. And while I don't dispute their being the best conference, it does give me pause when a South Florida team that I have no handle on can beat Auburn at home, the second-worst SEC team in Mississippi State can beat Auburn at home, yet Auburn can beat Florida and nearly beat LSU on the road. That Kentucky has earned national recognition yet loses to that same lost-to-Auburn Florida team as well as a South Carolina team that ends up losing to Vanderbilt at home. Those are far worse parity transgressions than what the Big 10, ACC, and Big 12 have displayed. More questions should be brought up about SEC teams than there have been to this point. They may be the best conference, but it's not a runaway victory like some think.

Anyways, Big 10 offensive play - smashmouth running with play action on offense. In my mind the best way to counter speedy offenses (aside from the right defense, which I'm about to address) is to have a clock-controlling, defense-pounding offense in return. But the quality of Big 10 play is waaaay down this year. Most of the teams are re-establishing identity after losing key players, and then you have anomalies like Illinois. In a good year I put the Big 10 up against the SEC any time. Definitely not this year.

As for Michigan, I'm heartened to see they won at Illinois. I'm not afraid to say that I was rather scared going into that game. I'm a huge Lloyd Carr opponent, and nothing he's done with this team gave me confidence going into that night game and Mike Hart not playing was the icing on top. But even getting that solid win only proves that they will be able to defeat Ohio State should the Tressel curse on Lloyd not rear its ugly head. None of the Big 10 teams, especially Michigan, is equipped to face other teams nationally. All of their defenses are built for the prototypical Big 10 offense and as such, lack quality corners and speedy linebackers and safeties. A proper spread offense, with the proper talent, will destroy any Big 10 team right now, especially Michigan. What Michigan needs to do is keep their style of offense, keep the wrinkles like the Arrington pass, but start recruiting real secondary players. Start training for speed like they supposedly started to do last year. It's rather sickening for me as a Michigan fan to constantly see failure on a national level, to constantly see Ohio f'n State earn more respect, year after year. We might salvage a Big 10 title out of the debacle that's been this season, but if Lloyd remains and/or names his successor things aren't going to change. That is what scares me the most.

Not that UCONN has played a tough schedule, but they are only a 1 point road loss against Virginia(damn kicker for Virginia shanks a 38 yard field goal in the last minute that would have made it 4 and helped my 5-team parley that weekend, but Cal would have killed it later anyway) away from being unbeaten. That is not a misprint, UCONN has less losses than any team in the SEC not named LSU, and are tied loss wise with them. They'd probably get beat by 50 by an SEC team, but, they still are one of the few 1 loss teams remaining, and knocked USF out of a potential BCS spot 2 years ago at home.
On style of play: Being a Notre Dame fan, I've probably watched more Big Ten style than anything else, as until the past few years, unless a Notre Dame game was on ABC, they usually sent a Big Ten game. Now though, they generally send a dreadful ACC or Big East game. Lately though, I don't see the intensity coming through for a Big Ten game like I do an SEC game. Maybe it is because most of the SEC games I see are the top level games, and the run of the mill Purdue vs. Iowa and Minnesota vs. Michigan State games just have jaded me, but the SEC seems to take it to that next level. I'd still rather watch the Big Ten over the Big East or even the Big XII, but the SEC the past few seasons has really drawn me in, and I have no real rooting interest for anyone in that conference, except whoever is playing Alabama that week.

Oh, I don't mean aesthetically. I'd much rather watch a SEC game or a Pac 10 game than a Big 10 game. But if I was a coach, I'd want my offense to be Big 10 style.

Well honestly what other style is the Big 10 going to run? You're up there in November, chances are the weather is going to favor a slow pound it running game over flashy passing offenses. It just makes sense for those teams to play that way in my view. But yeah, it is boring as hell and the main reason why I hate watching Big 10 games. And as for if I had my choice, I'm not going with that style. It has the ability to slow down games and keep you in it. But when it fails early and you get behind, you're basically dead in the water. Whereas if you go spread option or something like that you can mess up a bit and still be in the game.

I recall a few years ago when Ohio State had an undefeated team(can't remember what year) and every single week no matter who they played, great or crappy team, it was down to the wire with a close win. That slow it down style could have lost them a game every week as much as it could win it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the location helps keep the SEC schools stocked with talent. I mean if you're a hot prospect and can choose either Ohio State or sunny beautiful Florida, where are you going? Now that wouldn't be the only factor and isn't for everyone, but you better believe it plays into it for some of these kids.

Why do we see upsets in the SEC? I think it's mostly because it's such a hard conference where very few teams are really bad. When you've got to face say Florida one week followed by Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and Auburn, heck you're much more likely to be beaten to a pulp/looking forward/back/whatever and get beat by someone you're probably better than. Look at the games LSU is coming off. If they didn't have the week off but instead had to play at Arkansas, a team they should whip, it wouldn't be shocking at all to see them get upset.

Even though they are the other school here in Wildcat Country and K-State could have beat them, The potentially scariest game for the Jayhawks is probably Missouri. They have several possible stumbles but even though they were off last week, they beat at decent CU team. Good, Good defense and not a flashy but efficient offense. They could make it to the Conference Championship game undefeated. If they win it, and LSU loses again, I wonder if they could go to the big game or will their noncoference kill them?

Yeah isn't it just crazy to think that come the last week of the season before conference title games, we could be gearing up for 11-0 Kansas vs 10-1 Missouri???? Sure it's a big if right now but certainly possible. I'd probably bet on Missouri getting there with that record and maybe Kansas having one loss as well but who knows.

IF KU can go undefeated and Mizzou holds up it's end that will certainly help KU a lot. Being undefeated, beating a one loss Missouri team and then potentially a one loss OU team should be enough to make it a very close call for the title game. If Ohio State loses a game, as does BC, I think it would be enough to pass them up.

Course Kansas/LSU is not a game anyone wants to see, and it's not going to happen, but still. I almost want it to happen anyway, just so we can get the entire nation to see The Round Mound of Touchdown and the wonderful T-shirts he has inspired such as "Our Coach Can Eat Your Coach".
