Assuming that we can't just go back in time in order to make money on the stock market / gambling, and presuming that I could prepare before I ended up there (take time to learn the language), I would want to live in Ancient Greece. Being a philosopher at that time seems like a pretty easy job. Everything was theoritical, so you could make ridiculous claims and no one would call you on it.
This may sound weird but say the 2050s or 60s. See what happened and should have a lot more decades in front of me. At 51, going back means I am almost toast. And the good old days weren't.

Echo this - I figure in many older decades, I'd already be dead.

Having just seen that thing on VH1 Classic last night, the 70's (specifically 1977) in New York. Ya know, besides the whole Son of Sam and bombed-out everything, it seemed like that would've been one really interesting place to be.
This is a rather interesting question. What made you think of it?
Anyways, I'd go back to the 70's... 1770's that is. I think it'd be pretty cool to live through the American Revolution and see how the founding fathers went about doing everything and picking the brains of the writers of the Constitution.
I'd also go back to the 0030's to see what the last years of Jesus' life were like. See what he was really all about and how wrong the christians of today get it all wrong.
That would be tough to pick. I'd either go for 1850s (or around there) because it would be neat to see unexplored America (1900s for brand-new Seattle would also work), or 1940s so I could see Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, the guys pieman saw when he was a kid.
Also, I would be happy to go back to 1970s Seattle to try to build more, wider roads for 2000s traffic.

But, if whatever group of Christians you're talking about got it right, would you even recognize it?
As for me, put me down for the future. Although it would be cool to experience some of the great moments of the past, I can always read about them. Not so the future. Plus, I think actually experiencing romanticized days gone by could only be disappointing.

Make that 3 of us - I'm 45 and if I went back to the Old West of the late 1800's like I would like to, I would be filled with lead and left for dead

Michael Moorcock's book "behold the man" is a fun little story about this very subject. It might be kind of heretic in ways, but it deals with precognition and 'destiny' in a nice way.
My choice, as crazy as it sounds, would be the 1930s-1940s. Assuming I can just be an observer. Would be interesting to study all the craziness of those two decades.
If I had to really live in that time? 60s/70s.
(edited by dMp on 26.10.07 1034) *sigh* Why bother?
If you can add the additional factor of picking the location, I would pick the 1980's in New York (because I also want to be in New York during the 1970's while in my twenties so I could hang out at CBGB).
I would also pick very specific parts of Los Angeles during the 1960's for my current age. Post WWII Paris would've been cool as well. And New Orleans, Chicago or New York during the 1920's jazz scene - seeing Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, Sydney Bechet, and a bunch of other jazz greats who were dead long after I was born. That would've been awesome.
Whenever and wherever "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" was staged....that's where I would want to be.
Life was so much simpler back then.
I've seen 17 movies so far this year: Because I Said So - (2*); Borat - (5*); Children Of Men - (4*); Die Hard 4 - (5*); Evan Almighty - (3.5*); Fantastic Four 2 - (4.5*); Hairspray - (5*); Harry Potter 5 - (4*); Knocked Up - (4*); The Last Mimsy - (4*); Mr. Brooks - (4*); Resident Evil: Extinction - (3.5*); Shrek The Third - (3*); Simpsons Movie - (3*); Spiderman 3 - (3.5*); Superbad - (1*); Transformers - (2*)
Put me down for the future too. But like the year 2100. I would love to se ehow far we have come and to see if anything disease wise has been cured. Then I would know which to donate to when I get back!

To echo Wpob's signature; the year 3000. I admit I like the concept of the future like many here mentionned, but imagine it taken a step further. As long as I get to see the flying car (youtube.com)

Yes; failing to pay a transit ticket. I rode the C-train in Calgary, didn't pay my fare, got caught...and lost the payment information. I ended up getting arrested when getting a a criminal check done for a security license.
