While the pundits were all talking about bringing Beckett back in Game 4, I was figuring all along that if need be, he'll be available for 3 or 4 innings in the middle of a Game 7 if Dice K struggles again.

Not that anyone in Chicago would know about Josh Beckett and MLB League Championship Series...

At least Sabathia starting forces Francona to take Drew out of the line-up, thus, an automatic benefit for the Red Sox. Wow, 4 more exciting years of Drew and 3 more of Lugo. Another great off-season of shopping by the GM. I shudder to think how he'll spend the Matt Clement savings in the coming off-season. Matt Clement: 1 more All-Star Game and 1 less year on the contract than Carl Pavano. Other than that, push.
I have faith in Beckett. If they somehow could get it back to Fenway for Game 6, I have some faith that Schilling is too arrogant to lose the season in his last start for the Red Sox, and part of me hopes that Carmona is like Tim Hudson and John Lackey and is spooked by Fenway Park. Then, you turn Game 7 into Russian Roulette between the back of the Red Sox rotation and the back of the Indians rotation and hope the Red Sox can remember to hit at Fenway.
However, let's not compare this to 2004. Boston was fortunate to survive Game 4 of that series. If you watch the 6 hour Game 5, there are at least 15 different occasions where if 1 thing breaks right for the Yankees after they take the 4-2 lead, the series is over. Tony Clark's ball bouncing into the stands by the slimmest of margins rather than bouncing around for an RBI double comes to mind, let alone the multiple opportunities Torre had to run on Wakefield/Varitek, when Varitek hadn't caught the knuckleball all year and was barely catching it that night. If you are fortunate, you get one of those breaks in a lifetime, and the Red Sox got it. This team has to play from ahead, if they fall behind, I can't see it happening, unless it is Borowski in Game 7 very close at Fenway. But, they can't screw up before then.

Pavano never got conked in the head with a line drive, then tried to pitch with basically a shredded elbow in order to make up for the time he missed after getting conked in the head with a line drive.

I, as a Chicagoan, personally rather enjoyed Josh Beckett's 2003 postseason work

That said, I feel like the series ends tonight. I know Beckett will make it hard, but I think tonight CC earns his pay and shows that he's deserving of being called an ace. The wildcard is going to be the weather. This could get interesting if there's a storm that delays the game early, so much so that both teams end up with extended bullpen outings.

So much for that. Game 6 Saturday night.

They might be down 3-2, but it's Boston's series to lose now that they're going back to Fenway. Had Fausto been dominant in Game 2, I'd declare the Sox dead. But he wasn't, so I give the Sox the edge Saturday. Though I'm surprised that Boston's putting Schilling on the hill for Game 6. I thought for sure he'd be up there for Game 7.

Speaking of which, who would get the start should Game 7 happen? Do you hand the ball to Dice-K in spite of everything or do you take a chance on Wakefield?

Well, phooey. Figured Beckett would be tough again, but darn if I wasn't hoping the bullpen wouldn't close it out with a better effort. At least Lewis got a bit of a break so he'll be available for Game 6 and 7 if necessary. Betancourt is a machine, he should also be available. Perez should be done for this series. Wow, what a 180 from his season.

I'll still take my chances with Fausto over Schilling. I'll also stand by my Tribe in 6 prediction.

Loved how Mike & Mike were tearing into Beckett re: Lofton this morning. Basically calling him out for being so damn sensitive about Lofton's reaction to a perceived walk. Funny stuff.

So much for low scoring classics we were expecting.

I was thinking if we didn't sweep Boston at The Jake we lose the series. No clue what has happened to CC Sabathia (The C's stand for choke) But he is over 260 innings for the season, his arm must be shot. Hafner is looking worse then he did during the bulk of the season, so I'm not very optimistic about our chances, even though at this hour we have the lead.

I'm having real bad flashbacks from 1999 here, Cleveland had Boston all but beat, then falls apart the last few games. I'm thinking Fausto gets bombed tonight, to some mindnumbing amount of runs. Cleveland comes back and jumps all over Dice-K in game 7, Beckett comes in off of short rest and pitches a perfect game for 5 innings, Boston gets back in it, and blows away Borowski in the 9th. Cleveland fans then spend the next 10 years debating Wedge's decision to close out with Jobo over Betancourt, much like the Mesa/Jackson debate from 97.

God I never hoped to be more wrong then right now.

Well, I had a feeling it'd go 7. Sabathia and Fausto were anything but dominant and they both rolled over again for Games 5 and 6. Fausto, in particular, got rocked HARD at Fenway for the second straight time. When J.D. Drew is making you look bad, you've got problems.

Now it comes down to Dice-K and Westbrook. If Dice-K rolls over again, it'll be a while before he can win over the Fenway faithful again. But Westbrook's more of an X-factor. If he morphs back into Bad Jake, the Indians are getting sent home.

Oh and get familiar with Cleveland's 1999 3-1 series choke job against the Red Sox, because I have a feeling you'll be hearing about it ALL FREAKIN DAY on SportsCenter tomorrow and Fox on Monday.

I have to believe that neither manager will let their starter get too deep into trouble. The Red Sox have Wakefield and Lester (and Beckett?) ready to go if needed, and the Indians can go to Byrd if they need him.

If Daisuke gets into trouble in the middle of an inning, even the first, I really hope Tito gets a RELIEF pitcher (Timlin or Delcarmen) up to get out of it, then lets Wake/Lester/Becks start an inning fresh.

Don't piss off the Sox. Good lord, that was some beatdown.

The turning point? Kenny Lofton getting greedy in the 5th and getting gunned down at second base. Had he stayed on first, it would have been the start of yet another Cleveland dominant 5th, but that just killed the Indians in the end.

Let's also not forget the hold-up/not hold-up in the seventh when Lofton looked like he could've easily scored on that ricochet base hit in foul territory. He scores there and the game is tied. You could tell FOX was already focusing on that particular moment as the goat incident that'll be replayed for years

Man, rough year for Ohio sports fans. Ohio State gets lit up in both major NCAA finals, then the Cavs get blown out of the NBA finals and now the Indians blow a 3-1 lead.

Yeah, but... WE'RE #2! WE'RE #2! It's like the Buffalo Bills, only doing it all in one year! Sigh.

Congrats to Boston. They kicked ass.

I think all of Cleveland cried out at once, "WHY DID HE STOP?!?!?" I know my wife and I both did.

This series also managed to reduce whatever liking I had for Boston to nothingness, and inspired the lovely Mrs. whatever, who could really give a rat's behind about sports, to now carry a white-hot hatred for each and every Red Sox player.

I honestly have no idea what this means for the offseason. With the core locked up, this is the team I'll be pulling for for the next few years. They look well armed for the regular season, and I still feel good about the bullpen and offense. But when it comes to the postseason, will they be able to learn from this and stay loose? Will the starting rotation be managed better so CC isn't used up? Will anything come of this report I now hear about Byrd and HGH?

Joel Skinner: Former teammate of Don Mattingly. The Curse has tentacles.
Momentum of the series changed on Youk's triple in Game 5 off the glove of Sizemore. First break the Red Sox had gotten in a few games, and it led to the Indians season being flushed down the toilet for the 2nd time in 3 years with a ball off the glove/lost Sizemore.
In terms of the Indians long-term, you have to expect Cliff Lee to be better, but you have to wonder if Carmona will have a dip from 19 to 14. Now, if they can't get Sabathia signed long-term during the off-season, do they put him on the market and try to get a big return for him, or do they roll the dice next year, let him have a big year, and then have him walk when he wants between Zito and the expected Santana money?
Lugo's career in Boston was dead if Lofton had scored, as that run would have taken the air out of the building and probably led to an Indians victory.

Welcome to the club. I rooted for Cleveland, even knowing that probably 90% of them (including you) are OSU fans because I hate Boston so much. Now the Sox will probably win the Series and the Pats will probably go 19-0 and we'll have to suffer all those miserable, pompous fans who just 7 years ago were crying "Woe is me" and getting national attention for being losers. Now they'll be invading my TV for the exact opposite reason.

There is no God.

Wilson Valdez is the fifth starter. Chooch catches 18 innings of baseball, then lays out for a foul pop after moving to 3B. Man is my hero. Lost in all the Wilson-mania is Danys Baez pitching five innings of shutout baseball.
