CLEVELAND INDIANS (96-66, 3-1) vs. BOSTON RED SOX (96-66, 3-0)

Game 1: Friday, October 12 @ Boston
Game 2: Saturday, October 13 @ Boston
Game 3: Monday, October 15 @ Cleveland
Game 4: Tuesday, October 16 @ Cleveland
*Game 5: Thursday, October 18 @ Cleveland
*Game 6: Saturday, October 20 @ Boston
*Game 7: Sunday, October 21 @ Boston

All games (thankfully) televised on Fox
* If necessary

These were the two best teams in baseball this year, and it's right that it comes down to them. The aces for each team are equal, but I think Carmona can outduel either Schilling or Matsuzaka. The difference, for me, will be in the bullpen, specifically the end of the pen. With Joe Borowski closing things out, no Cleveland lead is safe. When Papelbon comes in, the game's pretty much over. I take the Red Sox, in 6.

Edit: Playoff schedule confuses me.

Personally, I'd MUCH rather have the TBS crew than the Tweedledee and Tweedledum combo of Buck & McCarver, but that's just me.

As for the series, it looks like we have great pitching matchups to look forward to. I don't think Beckett will slice through the Indians as easily as he did the Angels and Dice-K has proven himself to be a major question mark. On the same token, Sabathia and Fausto won't have it nearly as easy, either.

The Red Sox will have the offensive advantage, though. Ortiz and Manny have found their swings again (both have 2 HR's, including one instance of back-to-back jobs and one Manny walk-off), so I'll have to back Boston on this one.

But this series is definitely going 7.

I agree that I can see it going seven. I'll pick my Tribe for one reason, their attitude. If they stay loose and take what they are given they stand a great chance of making it. It's great seeing a team play baseball instead of long ball.

I think CC vs. Beckett will be a heckuva duel. Could go either way.

Fausto > Dice-K.

Pitch Byrd in Game 3 against Schilling. That'd be another good game that could go either way.

That would leave Westbrook against Wakefield(?). All depends on which of either starter shows up.

Tribe in 6.

I'm guessing/hoping/praying Schilling will be the Game 2 starter for Boston. Two best teams in baseball for pretty much the entire season. Boston in 6, as they'll get to Borowski at some point, and I don't want to see a Game 7 if Schilling is lined up 2/6 and Beckett 1/5, unless they go Wakefield or Lester 4/7. If you can't tell, I'm down on the guy going in Game 3, as they've based their recent evaluations of him on 1 good game against a Minnesota team that had been eliminated weeks earlier on the last weekend of the season.

I would venture to guess that this potential matchup would lead to a high scoring game. If the offenses show up, the Boston bats will make short work of Westbrook (who wasn't all that good against the Yankees) and Wakefield's banged up, so I wouldn't bet against Cleveland getting to him early.

Your hope has come true. Announced starters for 1st 4 games...

Game 1: Beckett vs Sabathia
Game 2: Schilling vs Carmona
Game 3: Dice-K vs Westbrook
Game 4: Wakefield vs Byrd

If it goes beyond that it looks to be Beckett game 5, Dice-K game 6, and Schill the game 7 starter.

Anybody on the east coast still awake?

That was a great game that you just KNEW was going to end as soon as Eric Gagne walked out. I just didn't think Cleveland would score SEVEN in that inning. It's a 1-1 tie heading back to Jacobs Field, but who do you give the advantage to between a struggling Dice-K and an inconsistent Westbrook?

The Tribe as they have nothing to lose and aren't expected to win. Plus they have better middle relief.

Jensen Lewis looks like the real deal, but Rafael Perez looked like he was tossing up batting practice fastballs on Saturday. He needs to get that turned around or the Indians will be in trouble.

The Red Sox desperately need a rain-out before Game 4. I'd rather see Tavarez than Matsuzaka at this point. You've heard of 5 inning pitchers, well, Matsuzaka has turned into a 4 inning pitcher. I used to see the John Burkett 1st inning disaster area, but never one who consistently struggled in the 5th.
As much as a flop Gagne was in Game 2, let us not forget Schilling not being able to hold a 3-1 lead or at least get through the 5th, where by getting through 6 would have allowed the bullpen to last longer before the disaster.
Why the hell is Francona so in love with the left-handed specialist who can't retire left-handers? They should have kept Romero instead of Lopez. Pull phony Roger Clemens injuries for Lopez and Gagne and put Tavarez and Corey on the roster, so we actually have 10 pitchers plus Lester rather than 8 pitchers plus Lester. As bad as the 11th inning was for Lester and as bad as the cancer scare was for him, at least his parents didn't name him Mo.
Get Pedroia out of the lead-off spot, put Ellsbury in the lead-off spot and get Drew as far away from the line-up as possible.
Time to see if this Red Sox team can handle coming back from adversity or whether they were a front running team that can't take a punch. This is as pissed as I've been at this team since the Saturday Night Massacre. At least put up a fight against Borowski.

On today's PTI, Tony K pointed out that the Red Sox paid a lot of money to Matsuzaka in the offseason. Hell, they paid $50M just to TALK to Dice-K's people. And why did the Sox go through all that trouble? As Tony said, to WIN in situations like today's game.

You tell ME if he was worth all that money.

Yeah, that scared the crap outta me. The biggest relief is seeing that Mastny, Lewis, Betancourt, and Borowski are at least pitching well against this lineup - they can ride along on their arms through this series at least.

Westbrook just earned a chunk of his contract. Makes up for the New York outing. Fantastic job last night.

Jensen Lewis is the man. I love our bullpen for next year. Don't know about Borowski as closer, but he's been getting the job done (although Wickman-esque) all year.

I hope Byrd can at least make it thru 5 innings tonight. Anything more than that is sweet, sweet gravy.

It's Year 1 of a 6-year contract, and it will probably be the worst year. Yeah, Dice has had a rough year, and no, I don't trust him one iota for the rest of 2007. (If it gets to Game 7, and he's upright, I say we start Wakefield.) But this offseason will be a lot easier for him than last; he can work on his mechanics, get more accustomed to the Major League style, and not have the media all over him as much as they have been. He'll be fine. Eventually. Not now, though.

It's been the story of the ALCS so far. It was all going well for the Sox until the 5th inning...again. It's a shame for Wakefield, who was doing pretty well until that point. Lester, at the very least, redeemed himself for Game 2, but the damage was done. I thought it got interesting again when Boston went back-to-back-to-back, but it was ultimately for naught.

Well, they came back from 3-0 three years ago. Can Boston come back from 3-1?

For a knuckleballer, he did his job. I think we all now know that their rotation outside of Beckett is shakey. And it will be very, very hard to win three straight but I can seeing it going at least 6.

Great job by Wakefield. Fantastic job by Byrd. I was disappointed to see the wait affected him so badly, but at least he got to 5+ innings for the bullpen to take over. What a grab by Cabrera late in the game. Outstanding.

Is Youkilis still juggling that ball?

I hope CC has his stuff together and keeps his head in the game. He'll have the home crowd, he's seen how to attack this lineup, let's see him put it together 'cause Beckett's history shows he is not going to give up runs easily.

ONE MORE TO GO...

In 2004, it was done with a starter so shaky he was pulled from the postseason rotation, a past-his-prime "ace" having to beat his Daddy, an ace with his ankle tendon sewn to his skin, and the same shaky starter except this time he was on two days of rest. Plus a dynamic, top-to-bottom offense where just about everybody chipped in and nobody wasted at-bats or outs.

In 2007, it will have to be done with an ace who may or may not be injured, the ankle tendon guy from 2004, and one of the following: The shaky Japanese import, the shaky/achey Wakey, or the starter so shaky he was pulled from the postseason rotation. Plus an offense that has anywhere between two and five absolutely dead spots, depending on who decides to show up and who the manager rightly sits.

I'm standing by my pre-series pick of seven games. Beckett is turning into a sure thing in the playoffs, and it's hard to believe that Schilling could again pitch as poorly as he did in Game Two.

That being said, hell yeah Tribe! Screw the Red Sox.
