October 11, 2007 - Last March, the world was stunned as Captain America, Steve Rogers, was gunned down on the steps of a court. Rogers was slated for a hearing regarding his criminal actions in the superhuman Civil War, one that saw dozens of heroes rebel against Tony Stark and his Registration Act. Since Captain America #25, the world has wondered if there would, or even could, be a new Captain America. Today we know the answer - this January, there will be.
Marvel Comics has just announced that Ed Brubaker will be introducing a new Captain America to the Marvel Universe with this January's Captain America #34. Brubaker will be teaming with his usual artistic partner Steve Epting, but joining them will be painter Alex Ross, who recently announced his return to the House of Ideas. Fans might remember that Marvel teased Ross's return with the return of Captain America only to swerve that into debuting the Avengers/Invaders project. If only they knew how close that teaser really was! Ross will be responsible for designing the new Captain America costume, and will provide a variant cover for the debut issue. Captain America #34 is currently scheduled to arrive in stores on January 16, 2007.
I'd be on board with this, except for this teaser image...
Captain America has a HANDGUN? That's like Batman carrying a gun! It just seems...wrong!
Anyhoo, time to speculate on who the new guy is. Anyone want to guess that it's the Winter Soldier?
That guy doesn't look very black to me. It's Bucky, Brubaker has been building to this since the 1st issue. Anything else would seem pulled out of his ass, and none of his run has been that way at all.

Bucky is too easy an answer.
Notice the bird he's standing on? I'm throwing Falcon out as the new Captain America.
It'll only be until they bring back Steve Rogers anyway, and I think Sam will make a perfect place holder.
I disagree. The only reason to put someone besides Steve in the suit is so that you can have a throwdown when he gets back (Like when Gruenwald did it with John Walker). I can't see Steve and Sam fighting each other for any good reason. I say it's some previously unknown Army/SHIELD/government agent.
I keep thinking Hawkeye even though I am pretty sure he hasn't shown up in Captain America during Brubaker's run at all.
But it would make sense, Clint idolizes/loved Captain America probably as much or more than any of the goofs who donned patriotic costumes to copy/pay homage to Cap - the fact that Clint and Steve fought like cats and dogs notwithstanding.
It's weird to see Cap with a gun, but hey, the guy was a soldier. He wasn't knocking out Nazis and leaving them tied up.
Bucky is the logical choice, and it's one of the few choices that wouldn't make long-time comics fans vomit in rage. If Bucky is the new Cap, that makes it less of a 'here's a new character taking over' (a la AzBats, Kyle Rayner, Scarlet Spider, Eric Masterson/Thor, etc.) and more of a passing of the torch, like Barry Allen and Wally West. Though Falcon would be another interesting choice. It would be interesting to see a Cap with actual superpowers.

Weeeeeeeeeeellllllllll...I wouldn't use the term "powers" necessarily when talking about Falcon.

What this essentially means, I'd imagine, is that if Falcon takes up the mantle, he'd trade in his falcon for a bald eagle. That works for me.
The Flash analogy is perfect, by the way, and infinitely preferable to another "John Walker" situation.
fixed. I forgot to close my spoiler tag and everything went to hell. For a minute I thought that you had capped a screenshot of another thread and carried it over.
