Because the Cyber Sunday ECW Championship match options debut on WWE.com tomorrow, tonight's matches are packaged as try-outs to impress GM Estrada.

+ Big Daddy V vs. Tommy Dreamer
Squash. Or a squish. Take your pick.

+ Kevin Thorn vs. James Curtis
Tazz rightfully chides Curtis for wearing tights that bear his first name. Thorn clubs and clubs and clubs, eventually putting Curtis in the corner for a while. Then we get a scary botched spot where Curtis falls off Thorn's shoulders for what seemed to be a Torture Rack-style backbreaker. They quickly set up the "Original Sin" ring-draped Stunner to end the match.

No Mercy footage shows me for the first time that Punk was smashed and left to crawl away exactly as Triple H did on the next night's RAW. Huh. Even had the bevy of refs help him up the ramp.

+ The Miz vs. Balls Mahoney
I have no joy in admitting this, but Miz is really putting out an effort in the ring. He sells and steps into his spots well. He's good. He wins by countout when Balls smashes into the announce table. And then Miz punts the teddy bear into the stands.

+ John Morrison vs. CM Punk
Punk wears the DDP rib tape, and Morrison goes to town. And frankly he proves he's the best guy on the roster. His only failing may be too much reliance on kicks, but Punk does the same thing in his moments of offense. Punk eats a front suplex slam onto the ring steps and a brilliant slingshot dropkick to the torso. Punk can't hit the G2S, and Morrison gives him an inverted suplex from the top rope. He pins him, and it's only now that I find that this isn't for the belt. I wouldn't have minded a title change here as Punk was clearly weakened, and Morrison attacked with style. His various kicks are stylish, even if there are too many of them.

I found it interesting that they did play up how strange it was that Matt Striker would essentially cost Big Daddy V the championship, interfering when his man was actually winning. Hopefully they're going somewhere interesting with that.

That Kevin Thorn match belonged on Derby City Wrestling, not ECW. It was so bad though that it ended up being high comedy.

I still like the Balls/Miz feud, although I will point out that Miz can't punt like Snitsky can. Shame really.

The main event was good, but now if anyone is going to pretend that CM Punk is not being punished for his interactions with Tony "Cellaphone" Atlas last week, they are just incorrect.

John Morrison will win the Cyber Sunday vote, and I'll be happy that it isn't BDV.

Punk's been booked exactly the same for the past three months. Why anyone would assume that him jobbing to Morrison is punishment - especially after the dirtsheets have repeatedly stated that a return to the Morrison feud was planned as soon as Morrison returned - is beyond me. If Punk was being punished, he probably would have dropped the belt.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Orton plays semi-conscious well. Hopefully they don't use his pinfall win in a tag match as justification to put him in a Triple Threat or to replace Batista at Mania in a title match.
