Randy Orton def. Nobody At All to become the NEW WWE Champion

HHH (1) def. Randy Orton to become the NEW WWE Champion

Kennedy & Cade & Murdoch def. Hardy & London & Kendrick

CM Punk def. Big Daddy V via DQ when Matt Striker ran in about three minutes in and knocked CM Punk down for no reason, even though CM Punk didn't have the match won and Big Daddy V was already almost back up on his feet.

HHH (2) def. Umaga

Finlay vs. Rey Mysterio went to a no-contest when Finlay faked a concussion and attacked Mysterio as they were carting him out and the fans were chanting "Finlay" after thinking the injury was legit, which sure showed them stupid doctors who keep saying concussions are no laughing matter!

Matt Hardy def. MVP in a PIZZA EATING CONTEST

Beth Phoenix def. Candice Michelle to become the NEW WWE Women's Champion

Batista def. The Great Khali in a Punjabi Prison Match (which went 25 minutes)

Randy Orton def. HHH (3) to become the NEW WWE Champion

Vince McMahon def. The Fans when various chants of Y2J and signs brought to the arena yielded no appearance

If you didn't see this pay-per-view, you'd think I was trying to be funny. But no, it all actually happened.

Granted, with the Y2J thing the company NEVER said he was going to be there - it was just people reading way too much into random shit that popped up on the screen. But yeah, if you didn't want to see Chris Jericho return and you can't get enough of hot HHH action, then this was the show for you!

Was it just me or did there seem like the entire six-man match was a last minute addition? The entire match was disjointed, with an entire series of blown moves and spots there towards the end.

So am I to understand that Orton gets *two* title reigns out of this (while winning one match) plus one for HHH?

Yeesh. Maybe next they'll do a match patterned after that old Hardcore battle royal (during the 24/7 era, when every fall meant a new champ) so HHH can become a 30-time champ or something.

An 'interesting' booking choice, but I'm still trying to figure out WHY they give HHH the title and then have Randy Orton win it back later. Isn't that more of a late WCW booking tactic?

Easy Answer.

Orton being handed, the belt, and then defending it, doesnt build anything.

Having him lose it, and then win it back in a Last Man Standing match builds him as a much more credible champion.

Personally I never saw the "7OCT" that caused so much speculation that tonight would be Jericho's return date, although after the third or fourth time I heard about it I assumed there was something to it. If it really was in the video, WWE dicked with the fans for no reason; if it wasn't, then fans had as much reason to expect Jericho tonight as they did of getting the blowoff on GTV.

I think a big chunk of fan disappointment will come from the assumption that Jericho would return and be part of the title picture due to WWE not announcing anything before the show. Turns out that was their own indecision on what to do, but c'mon--every fan on the planet thought of "put it on Orton or Hunter" the minute Cena went into surgery, so why couldn't WWE?

Yeah, but if that was the plan, why even hand the belt to Orton in the first place? Why not just do Orton/HHH with the belt up for grabs? Other than the "fun" of watching HHHogan beat Raw's two biggest heels in one night?

For the first time ever, I walked out on a PPV -- during the Punjabi Prison match -- so it sounds like I missed a good final match. But with the way the show had gone up until that point, I had no confidence that HHH wouldn't just beat Orton again to complete the deballing.

As for the PP match -- when Khali got tied in the ropes early, am I the only one who was thinking "Just go for the door, dummy!" when Batista started beating on him? And with the way the injury bug has been lately, I'm amazed they booked Batista's jump.

If I cared about ECW, I'd probably be really pissed at the silly nonfinish of the title match.

Oh well. The six-man was good, at least, and Rey/Finley was entertaining up until the fake injury.

The crowd sure wanted Y2J at the beginning, didn't they? Still, they seemed happy settling with Triple H. If you like him, you probably liked this show. Me....not so much.

The opening match was fine action, and the immediate title switch was surprising, especially for a company that seems to be priding itself on long title runs lately.

The six-man was something different that you wouldn't see on Raw; they got more time and did some different moves.

The ECW Title match was embarrassingly short. And probably had the most pointless DQ I've seen in a while.

Triple H over Umaga was nothing special. Did anyone really think Umaga had a shot here?

The pizza eating contest would've been better served on Friday night. And all that time wasted to lead to the payoff of....Matt puking on MVP?

Finlay/Rey was a match you'd get on Smackdown....actually, it would probably be LONGER on Smackdown. The whole "Finlay fakes an injury" has been done before too. The camera going to a shot of the ref giving the "X" sign and Finlay not actually being strapped to the back-board were dead giveaways.

Beth/Candice was quite sloppy, and both women have done better.

Batista/Khali had an interesting last few minutes. I didn't think Khali could climb that much that fast. But Khali slamming the door on Batista's back was really not how they pictured it, I'm sure.

The main event was very good, and there were several spots where I thought Orton would be counted down. Still, not enough to make up for a pedestrian rest of the card.

i just got back from the show and i don't know how any of this came off on tv but at the allstate the worse match was finle and mysterio. the best was HHH / Orton 2.

Batista and Kahli was reay good. I have never seen a guy that size climb up a cage that dam fast. and that leap Batista did tore the roof off.

Biggest POP was Triple H the 3rd time he came out.

Bigest heat was Randy after that RKO on the table.

over all this was a fun show. The lines to get food was killer as it took from when Big daddy V came out till Umagas music ened to get to the end of the line.

It gets Triple H one reign closer to beating Flair's number.

Triple H doesn't have too many years left as a wrestler, he's gotta get as many quick little reigns in as possible.

If you had told me that I would paying to watch HHH wrestle three times in one night, I would have just opted for the Bears vs. Packers game.

Just not an inspiring card. Yes the third match was a decent match, but by that point I was so tired of HHH that nothing could hook me into the match. And really nothing else on the card did much. I enjoyed the Finlay match, and the MVP/Hardy thing, but otherwise I just was bored.

I think what did it for me is that I held out hope that something unexpected would happen. And while yes, they took an unexpected road to get there, in the end we ended up with Orton with the belt, and HHH as the #1 contender. And that's not a feud I want to pay to see.

The thing that really bothered me was that they switched the name plate on the belt to Triple H when he won the belt!!! Did they have an engraver on-site to do up the new nameplate? Do they carry around name plates with everyone's name on them in case they win???

It kind of ruined the illusion.

I left the bar after the Punjabi Prison match also. HHH is cool and everything, but 3 matches were too much. Especially since 2 of them were with Orton.

BTW, does anyone else think that Beth Phoenix looks like Beth Chapman, wife to Duane "Dog" Chapman?

I can't fault the WWE title booking, at all. It was a huge deal, which was needed to re-set the pieces after Cena's departure. It made Triple H more interesting than he's been since DX reformed. It put Orton over as a huge heel, without him having to resort to super-sneaky/chickenshit tactics. And it gave us a good match (HHH/Orton 1) and a great match (HHH/Orton LMS). I can understand it not being everyone's cup of tea, but objectively this was a Helluva way to solve the title conundrum.

Not a great top-to-bottom show, but the central conceit worked gangbusters and there was some good stuff in between. The six-man was fun, the PP match was shockingly watchable - better than Khali's bouts with Cena, even - and Rey/Finlay was good while it lasted. I don't like doing two non-finishes on one card, but man, that angle got over HUGE with the crowd.

"Like WWE would give away the return of Jericho on PPV! If that even ever happens they'll save it for free TV."

Like they did with HHH, Rey and Undertaker, and planning to do with Edge? Inaccurate sarcasm really doesn't work.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

So far, the Jericho tease is just that. The returns of the folks you cited were hard sells: identifying them clearly for weeks before they came back. I haven't seen anything conclusive that says the "save us 222" is definitely for Jericho's return.

I was likening it more to the returns of Eric Bishoff, Ric Flair, and Matt Hardy!

edit: and the Rock that one time

edit2: and it feels like The Undertaker has had a big return like, three times this year already.

I'm glad they had a(n apparent; I didn't see it) great title match and it's nice to know the last injury didn't wash up HHH but good. But even throwing out the uncoolness of 20 minute and 2 hour title reigns, I think Hunter winning the belt here takes the shine off of what could've and presumably still is his big coronation getting the title back at Wrestlemania after three years without it. Now it's three years without it except for that time he won it and lost it in one night.

As cool as it would've been for Jericho to show up and win, I'm glad that whatever they have/had planned for him will continue as planned instead of getting cut short after just two of those things.

My running diary...

Here we go, a combination of circumstances making this the most anticipated PPV since WrestleMania..

I spy signs:
"I'm Glad Cena got hurt"
"Orton is God"
"Save us Jericho"
"We Can't Stand Orton"
"Save us Orton #18" (Bears 3rd stringer Kyle Orton)
and even a "Mike Knox Pose" poster halfway up the ramp

Who had 3 minutes in the "someone uses the Cubs for cheap heat" pool? (Did I just say... three minutes?)

McMahon and Regal are out, speech time - it's fun to watch Vince's face as people keep cheering the demise of Cena's reign. Okay Vince, I think you heard what the fans want, loud and clear. If Jericho isn't behind "Save_Us.222", the angle is officially screwed.

Orton comes out to get handed the belt? (wtf??) Orton poses with the belt to mild enthusiasm, while the director misses the money shot of Orton posing with the fireworks going off behind him. Another loud "Y2J" chant when Orton's asked to pick an opponent for tonight. I love Chicago. Orton: "John, I know you're a home, watching the PPV right now..." I didn't know Excalibur05 was writing his promos now

And now here comes HHH to complain about how stupid it is to just hand a championship to someone. Er.. wait.

Just when I was about to think that a 30-minute gabfest segment would work in this one situation, Trips kills off that thought with some of his typical Conan droning. The so-called "Cerebral Assassin" finally goads Vince into giving him a title shot by calling Vince a chickensh*t doodyhead, with shriveled up balls. Sigh.

Match was special only for being for the title, and just when I think that HHH's near falls aren't believable because he only wins with the sledge or pedigree, he wins with a roll up off a blown charge into the ringpost? Not really a match that will go down in history. The crowd seemed okay with the result as Trips (11) resumes his chase after Flair's (17?) record. The deja vu belt pose does suggest that we may not be done crowning WWE champions tonight.. Did King have a Bobby Heenan moment as HHH posed with the belt: "How many of these (title posing pictures) will we have tonight?"

Backstage, Orton's gonna cry. I think Orton's "reign" is the second shortest in WWF/E history, behind the one when Andre the Giant beat Hogan in the "Twin Hebners" match, and tried to surrender the belt to DiBiase...

Just pointing out that at this stage of the show, if there wasn't the spectre of Jericho hanging over this show, it would be craptastic with handing away the WWE championship to Orton, and having HHH come out to grab the glory, yes?

Here's a 'special bonus match', which cuts down on the chances for more WWE championship matches later.. (Kennedy gets pwnt in retrospect by 5 Packer turnovers, heh.) I didn't remember what happened between Londrick and the Rednecks on Raw, now let's see if Kennedy is going to get de-pushed for the Champ being injured on his watch... Apparently not, Kennedy gets the duke over London with his second rope, fireman's carry Ken-ton bomb. Eight minutes didn't leave six men much of a chance to tell a story.

HHH and Batista tease a WM unification match?

Oh goodie, here's a rare HHH/Vince segment - Vince decides to make HHH vs Umaga into a championship defense. Are we going to see WWE Champion Umaga make more history tonight?

Punk gets a nice hometown pop, defending against Abdullah the Big Daddy V. Match never got into a flow as Stryker comes in for a blatant DQ after about 90 seconds.

Tazz: "You gotta be kidding me, I don't understand why Matt Stryker would cost Big Daady V the title!"
Me: "Word."

I guess this will lead to Morrison beating the weakened Punk then? That was ridiculously stupid booking, given it was shown that Punk had virtually no chance against V in the shows leading up to this, and Viz was dominating what little we saw. Of course Punk had to know that it's never good, being in WWE and appearing in your hometown.

Here's a commercial for the SmackDown match (Matt & MVP vs Taker & Kane) that everyone paying for the PPV would like to see NOW. And now a recap video package for the match, too. On a PPV. For a program that isn't getting a match until free TV this coming week. Are they freaking kidding??

Ah.. we need the PPV time for more important matters, as Tazzwell is hosting a Deep Dish Pizza eating contest between MVP and Matt Hardy. I'm sure the crowd will greatly prefer this to a match with Taker and Kane. (As we kill more time that could be used on WWE championship matches)

And THIS is your WrestleCrap moment of the night... The "payoff" joke is Matt puking pizza onto MVP's white jumpsuit. Absolutely brutal. How in the HELL does this get out of a writers' meeting??

Commercial: Cyber Sunday's gonna have a Hell in the Cell match. And Stone Cold will appear as a guest referee. After the formality of a vote, I guess.

HHH vs Umaga. I notice that WWE keeps an engraver on staff in case you need a nameplate done up in the middle of a PPV. Or maybe they hired the guy who does the (British) Open Championship trophy? Another plodding match that is interesting mostly for the belt being on the line, and circumstances of the night. HHH wins off Umaga missing a corner splash in under five minutes. That's two finishes where HHH's opponent took themselves out as much as they were beat. I'm guessing this is just here to weaken Trips more for the show-closing angle. Sigh again.

Nice to hear them playing up that Finlay has held all those titles in Europe, but never the WHT, he'd make a great contender if given a chance. We get about eight minutes here before another sportz entertainment finish. I hate silly stuff like this injury angle - by any stretch of internal logic, the ref should count him out - or stop the match if he thinks it's an injury. Or was that the worst camera angle evar when they caught Finlay peeking up? Okay, stupid it is. No, even stupider - as they decide to make it a non-finish... this show is now rated N, for Nitro-licious!

And it gets better... Vince informs Trips that Orton is invoking his rematch clause immediately, and HHH/Orton in the last man standing match is our main event. I think we've seen enough to say that the Chicago PPV curse has officially struck again.

God, I hate Candice's new remix theme.. That match was... no good at all. But maybe we need to give Beth a chance to see what she can do with someone who can work? Nice touch with Beth trying to co-opt the "history was made tonight" theme.

Time for Batista/Khali.
JBL: "There's a reason they've only done this match once in the WWE."
Me: "I didn't *think you'd actually have the balls to say it, JBL - heh."

This match blows based mostly on the format. Two men clubbering each other for an eternity, and we have to suffer through the first three door spots before things can even start to get serious. Let's just say that hopefully that will be the *last Punjabi Prison match. I made it out as about 15 minutes of hell (for viewers). Although I can understand why people would think it lasted 35.

Thank God for Todd Grisham, I didn't think we were going to get to hear from HHH tonight. H is back to remind us that it's his show again. His third entrance of the night doesn't quite get the same pop, I think the live crowd has lost hope. Or they could all be in the back hitting Matt Hardy up for some Milk of Magnesia.

And another fairly pedestrian match, we kinda seem to be waiting for the heavy artillery to come out.. Orton with some unexpected recoveries at 9, now I'm "Waiting for Sledgie" to finish Randy off. Match finally picks up momentum when HHH is allowed to work his "main event style" (which looks suspiciously like working red, using announce tables and weapons that mid-carders aren't generally allowed in their matches). So how this is different from WCW back in the day not letting mid-carders and cruiserweights show them up? Don't look at me, I dunno know either.

Oh, Orton wins in the end. I think the heart was cut out of the event when people realized that the a re-anointed HHH was the best they were going to get on this night. The mega-push is dead, long live the mega-push!
