So apparently Ned Yost decided a beanball war was more important to him than trying to win the game last night. I kind of like the Brew Crew, and I've got to think between coughing up the division lead and crap like this that Ned Yost has to be entering his final weekend as the manager up there.

For what it's worth, Mark Attanasio has already said that Yost will be back next year.
And, could you stop talking about the Cubs in the playoffs, please? You're making me worry more than I already have to. :)
I've been fastidiously refraining from posting in these playoff tracker threads - just when the Cubs finally reach 10 games over .500 and appear to be home free... they must have got a collective nosebleed.
But as much as I want to enjoy the meltdown of Ned Yost, you just can't think that anyone would be stupid enough to intentionally plunk someone in the 8th inning of a game you're trailing by a run. Particularly in the last week of a pennant race you're trailing by 2 games. Although looking at the replay, it's hard to say how the ump had much choice but to run McClung for that pitch, with warnings already given.
Still (barring a turnaround), I suspect that 'getting kicked from 3 of 4 games as the division is being decided' is the sort of thing local media types will keep on file if the Brewers get off to a slow start next season. And as the Saints are showing us now, being a young "team on the rise" is no guarantee that the path to success is inevitable.
Originally posted by kwikHow many different playoff games would you need to break THAT tie? The Mets and the Phils would play off for the East, there'd be 2 games in the West. Say for the sake of argument, Philly wins a NL East playoff, and San Diego beats both Arizona and Colorado in West playoff games (That is how they break 3-way ties, correct? One team gets a day off, and sacrifices home field, or something like that?) Since playoff games are treated like regular season games, wouldn't there still be a 3-way tie for the Wild Card? And what if San Diego beats Arizona, but loses to Colorado? Oy, the mind boggles.
Hey, ESPN (sports.espn.go.com) answered my question!
Some tiebreaker coin flips for home field have already happened, but MLB apparently has to do some more today, probably due to the Rockies run and/or the Mets slow fade.
In any event, here's what would happen if there is a 5-way tie for 3 spots (NL West and East titles, and Wild Card)
Monday- Mets at Phillies, NL East tiebreaker, game 1 of NL West tiebreak, Colorado won the 3-way NL West tiebreak for choice, so they have a decision, play both the Pads and Diamondbacks at home, or make SD and Arizona play, and then go on the road to play the winner.
Tuesday- Game 2 of NL West tiebreak
Wednesday- Start of Wild Card tiebreak, with the Mets/Phillies loser, and the 2 NL West losers
Thursday- Game 2 of Wild Card tiebreak
Friday- NLDS start
If it winds up being a 4-way tie, with 2 in the East, and 2 in the West, the tiebreaker games would be on Monday and Tuesday. Division titles decided on Monday, Wild Card on Tuesday.
If there's a 3-way tie in the West, AND Philadelphia (or, to be fair, New York) finishes with the same record, the NL West would be decided on Monday and Tuesday, and the Wild Card on Wednesday and Thursday.
As of now, both NL division series are supposed to start on Wednesday, and if they can't start until Friday, both series would be 2 games behind schedule.

A slight bit of clarity has developed. Colorado is dead in the West, while still holding onto life in the Wild Card being 2 out with 2 to go. The Diamondbacks have clinched at least the Wild Card, as neither the Rockies nor Mets/Mutts can reach 90. Padres have clinched at worst a 1 game playoff on Monday and hold 2 game lead with 2 to go. Cubs have clinched the Central and the 3 seed thanks to the Fighting Ned Yost's deciding not to accept the engraved invitation to stay in the race until the end. Yost needs to go after blowing the lead and then not being able to have his team play with composure down the stretch. They would sing songs for years about the Brewers collapse, except it will go overlooked as the stench from Shea Stadium will forever overshadow the Brewer meltdown. Mr. Met has been seen hanging from a tree as the Mets have surrendered the East lead to the Phillies, 1 out in the East and 2 out in the Wild Card. Only thing that could possibly save the Mets is if the Phillies remember they are the Phillies. AL is very simple. Indians vs. Yankees and Red Sox vs. Angels in Round 1, with only remaining question being who is the 1 seed and gets the opportunity to pick the 7 or 8 day series. If the Mets get bounced, get ready for the Phillies vs Padres/D'Backs/Rockies games to be the very late night series next weekend.
Therefore, I hope there is a four-way tie for the NL wildcard. They could then play a round-robin schedule, home and home against each other. Fox could call it the "National League Round-Robin Wild Card Mini-Season Elimination League Playoffs". The top two teams would then play a best of five to determine the wild card team.
That would be the "NLRRWCMSELP Championship Series".
The season would last into December and it would give me even more options in avoiding watching the NHL.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... Cancel the Amber Alert: There is life in Flushing and the Mets are back in control of their fate, thanks to Philadelphia finally slipping up a bit and a stellar performance by everyone involved against the Marlins. All the Mets gotta do is win tomorrow and their season will continue, whether it's to a playoff or to the start of a LDS.
There's still the potential for a four-way tie for these last two spots should we see a Rockies win tonight combined with Mets, Phillies, and Rockies wins plus another Padres loss tomorrow. I *think* this is how the tiebreaker games would go down if that were to occur:
- NYM @ PHI to determine NL East champion
If PHI wins: - NYM @ SD (COL won season series against NYM & SD, SD won season series against NYM) - NYM/SD winner @ COL to determine Wild Card
If NYM wins: - SD @ PHI (COL won season series against PHI & SD, PHI won season series against SD) - SD/PHI winner @ COL to determine Wild Card
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
Reason why you can't script baseball: Trevor Hoffman blows a shot to get the Padres outright into the playoffs. In itself, not surprising, as Hoffman isn't someone I'd put my life on in a big spot. However, to give it up to the patron saint of the Padres Tony Gwynn's son is something that would get thrown out of any Hollywood studio.

Theoretically, Colorado would actually have a decision to make:
Play 2 games, at home, or 1 on the road. So whoever won the Tuesday game would host Colorado on Wednesday in that case.
The AL playoffs are set at this point- Boston starts their series hosting the Angels on Wednesday, and Cleveland hosts the Yanks on Thursday.
As for the NL, well, may as well break it down by team.
NY Mets (vs. Florida)- a win gets them, at the very least, into the NL East tiebreaker. A win and a Philadelphia loss clinches the division. A win, and a Philadelphia win, and a San Diego loss gets 2 cracks at getting in, via the East tiebreaker, and a Wild Card tiebreak. A loss eliminates them from the Wild Card, and a loss plus a Philadelphia win eliminates them from the playoffs.
Philadelphia (vs. Washington)- See above, substituting Mets and Phillies accordingly.
San Diego (at Milwaukee)- The easiest of the bunch: win, and they're in. At the very least, they're in whatever Wild Card tiebreaker scenario emerges. If everyone (Mets, Padres, Phillies, Rockies) lose, they back in.
Colorado (vs. Arizona)- Really, they're only watching two games- they win, San Diego loses, they're in a Wild Card tiebreaker, regardless of how the NL East plays out.
If a NL East team wins the Wild Card, the NL matchups would be:
Arizona vs. Wild Card Chicago vs. NL East Champ
If the Wild Card comes out of the West, we get: Arizona vs. Chicago NL East vs. Wild Card

For the curious (like me,) a win by Arizona tomorrow gives them their 91st victory, the lowest win total to lead a league since the 1983 Dodgers (not counting the 1995 and 1981 strike-shortened seasons, of course.)
(Not to knock the D-Backs; I've heard enough cracks at my Cardinals after last October. But it speaks to the parity of the Senior Circuit.)
If Zona loses, their 90-win mark will be the lowest to head a league since the 1959 Dodgers racked up a paltry 86 victories (out of 154 games, which extrapolates to just over 90 wins in a 162 game sked) en route to a World Series win over the White Sox. (They added two wins in sweeping a best-of-three playoff with Milwaukee to decide the pennant.)
After leading the division by 7 with 17 games to go, the Mets have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm sure they'll have plenty to think about as they sit home this October.
Meanwhile, congrats to the NL East Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Don't that beat all?

If Willie Randolph, by far the dumbest manager in the Major Leagues, is fired as a result of this then it will have been worth the suffering...
It'll be Arizona San Diego @ Colorado tomorrow. Game will be on TBS at 7:37 EST. Peavy vs Fogg is the current pitching matchup, but the Rockies may change their mind.
TBS started an HD feed on 09/01, and will broadcast (most?) games in HD. It's supposed to be picked up by many cable companies tomorrow (10/01), so you may want to hunt around.
San Diego should be favored with Peavy, but you have to wonder after blowing leads in 2 games that would have clinched a playoff spot. Nice to see Jorge Julio still does his best to be an arsonist. Onto the Metropolitans: What will become of the special seating they installed for the playoffs? Has any player gone from beloved to despised by a fan base as quickly as Jose Reyes? When your team has problems hustling, maybe bringing in #24 in your programs, #1 at the in-game card table, Rickey Henderson in to be a coach isn't the sanest move.

SAN DIEGO at Colorado. Arizona won the NL West and Monday's winner is the wild card.

Kind of says something about young teams under pressure when the Brewers gag their way through the last 2 weeks to blow the NL Central, then the second the pressure is off they pull it together for the last weekend to kick the Pads into a playoff.
And speaking of choking, congrats to the Mets for a historic collapse, and to the Phils for somehow not blowing it for themselves. Go get yourself another ring now Gooch and Crash :)
It's interesting because from what I've read recently about the Dodgers is that they can resign their players but they really can't add new free agents to their team until the sale is final.
