That was a fantastic pair of fights. David Estrada was very game under an assault from Andre Berto that would have stopped many fighters in a lot less than eleven rounds. However, that was just the appetizer for the main event, that saw Kelly Pavlik knock out Jermain Taylor in seven rounds. Pavlik was knocked down in the second round and was in BIG trouble, but fought through it to survive the round, and went on to get the KO by battering Taylor with repeated right hands.

Pavlik is going to be a HUGE star if he keeps winning. He's a well-spoken white kid from Ohio, 25 years old, 32-0 now with 29 KOs. I'm surprised that the judges had Pavlik behind (though that could have been erroneous reporting by HBO), but he was getting to Taylor a lot, and once he got Taylor with a flush shot he finished him right away, blasting him with four clean shots that I saw.

A lot of the big fights that had been scheduled have been canceled or postponed, but there are still a bunch of good ones coming, and this got us off to a great start. Three awesome rounds, three boxing rounds, and then dynamite.

The rematch clause in the fight says a rematch would be at 166, but hopefully they will fight at 160 again so Taylor will have another shot at the title.

I don't think either one of them would have a problem getting to 168 and moreover, Pavlik's frame is probably better suited to it than Taylor's, whose kind of maxed out at 160. At a point in boxing where there really aren't that many stars, Pavlik's a star. The writing was on the wall after the Miranda fight, but HBO has potentially something very big on their hands with this kid. He's also a bad opponent for most middleweights since he hits hard and has that lanky reach. It's like Tommy Hearns reincarnated.

Pavlik - Taylor was indeed an excellent fight, and (as mentioned in the prior two posts) Pavlik has definite star potential, as fans love a come from behind winner. However, it should be pointed out that if Steve Smoger had not been the referee last night, Jermain Taylor might still be middleweight champ. Pavlik showed a lot of heart coming back from the knockdown, but there are more than a few referees who would have stopped the fight in the second round (by the way, good work by the HBO announcers in making the point prior to the opening bell that Smoger is slower than most when it comes to calling for a stoppage). If Taylor can duplicate that early barrage in the rematch he could be the recipient of an early TKO victory.

Another key point from last night's fight was Taylor's inability to stop Pavlik's straight right hand. While there was nothing wrong with Taylor's offense, his failure to consistently defend himself against the combination of a straight left jab followed by a straight right hand proved to be his undoing. Whether Emmanuel Stewart can train into Taylor the side-to-side head movement needed to dodge those shots in time for the rematch remains to be seen.

That is a really good point, and I was really worried he was going to stop it in round 2. Referees are usually quickest to jump in to prevent a guy from taking defenseless shots, and Pavlik was trying to defend but he was wide open. When he got up you could see that he was not as badly hurt as it looked like he could have been (you could see him curse at himself as he walked to the neutral corner), and I think Taylor is 100% right that he threw too many finishing punches that didn't finish as the round went on. Pavlik did an OUTSTANDING job of weathering the storm and holding on as the round concluded, too.

It turns out HBO had the judges scorecards correct, and on ESPN.com Dan Rafael had it a shutout after six rounds for Taylor. As a loyal freak, I think Dan is the best boxing writer out there, but I don't think we were watching the same fight, but I think he was at ringside so maybe Taylor's shots looked like they were doing more damage in person. I found myself agreeing more with HBO's scoring because Pavlik was doing damage in the corners moreso than Taylor was in the center of the ring. Good thing for Pavlik he finished it wothout having to go to the cards.
