Almost playoff time. Going into Monday, September 17:

AL EAST
Boston 90-60 -
New York 85-64 4.5 GB

The Yanks took two out of three at Fenway, making them a cool 5 for their last 6 against Boston. Although the one game the Sox did win was pretty emphatic. With the way the Yanks have been playing, I have a really bad feeling that October will end with those damn Yankees winning the World Series and Joe Buck prattling on about how much adversity the team with the biggest payroll in the sport had to overcome. I am pre-emptively throwing up.

AL CENTRAL
Cleveland 87-62 -
Detroit 83-67 4.5 GB

The Tigers are as far behind Cleveland as the Yankees are behind Boston. The Indians will definitely be the underdogs in October, but isn't that the position every team would like to have? It's always the underdogs you have to watch. Just ask the '02 Angels, the '03 Marlins, the '05 White Sox, and the '06 Cardinals.

AL WEST
Los Angeles of Anaheim 87-62
Seattle 78-70 8.5 GB

The Angels pretty much have the AL West wrapped up, but the chinks in their armor have started to show. Their once-superhuman bullpen is looking VERY mortal, especially Shields (a near 4.00 ERA is VERY unlike him) and Rodriguez (who turns every save opportunity into must-see TV for all the wrong reasons). Justin Speier, once heralded as the big free agent pickup for Anaheim, hasn't done the bullpen any favors, sporting a near 4.00 ERA himself. The Angels are safely in, but their 'pen needs to improve if they want to stand any chance in October.

AL WILD CARD
New York -
Detroit 2.5 GB
Seattle 6.5 GB

For as great at the Yankees have been playing, the Tigers have also caught fire, winning 5 straight and 8 of their last 10. Detroit is still within striking distance and both the Tigers and Yankees have weak schedules to finish the year. Johan Santana could play spoiler, though, against the Tigers at the very end.

NL EAST
New York 83-65 -
Philadelphia 80-69 3.5 GB

Pedro Martinez was every bit the big lift the Mets were hoping for. But now Orlando Hernandez is hurting. If the Mets can hang on, they'll make a lot of noise in October. The Phils are finding their stride again after some bad losses, so this will come down to the wire.

NL CENTRAL
Chicago 78-72 -
Milwaukee 76-72 1 GB

Speaking of "down to the wire", witness the Cubs and Brewers, separated by two in the win column. The Brewers are playing like pros again and the Cubs are playing like a team that can feel October within their grasp. The Cardinals, on the other hand, lost 9 straight. Better luck next year, Cards fans.

NL WEST
Arizona 84-66 -
San Diego 81-67 2 GB
Los Angeles 79-70 4.5 GB

The Dodgers took two of three from both the Padres and D-Backs, but it might be too little, too late. The D-Backs have little to worry about and nearly have their ticket for October punched. The Padres are starting to get hot thanks to a sweep of the lowly Giants.

NL WILD CARD
San Diego -
Philadelphia 1.5 GB
Los Angeles 2.5 GB
Colorado 4.5 GB

The Padres have one problem right now: Chris Young hasn't been showing his Cy Young form since coming back from injury. If he finds his stuff again, they're definitely in. The Phils can catch up if they keep scoring runs, while the Dodgers and Rockies are on life support, but still technically in it.

Replace Yankees with Redsox and Biggest with Second Biggest and you know how the world felt when the Sox beat the Cards.

Either way, lots of tight races, making for an interesting fall!

Also, insert "give the Red Sox a 3-0 advantage, a lead in the ninth of game 4 with the Greatest Closer in Playoff History™ on the mound and games 6 and 7 (if necessary) at home only to lose the ALCS to the Yankees." Or have we forgotten about that already? No "adversity to overcome" there, right?

Was the ALCS comeback a huge, impressive moment? Yes.

Do many people who used to sympathize with the Red Sox now find them to be whiny, hypocritical fat cats who do to the rest of the league what they always complained that the Yankees did to them? Yes.

Of course, but that is SINCE the Sox won the Series in 2004. While it was happening the only people who were bent about it were Yankee and Cardinal fans.

Since then, I'm sure plenty of people wouldn't mind an Indians or Angels AL champ, for exactly those reasons. I jsut thought it was a bit of revisionist history on Stagger's part.

Uh, I am neither a Yankees fan nor a Cardinals fan and I was quite "bent" about it. Partly because of that windbag Bill Simmons, but mostly because every single Red Sox fan I knew was telling me that I have to root for the Red Sox because the Yankees were the anti-Christ/Evil Empire/league's richest team and because of that rooting for the Yankees was like "rooting for the house to win in blackjack".

And this was while they already had "Red Sox Nation" and (by FARRRRRR) the second-highest payroll in the league. If there's one thing I hate more than fans who whine that their baseball team hasn't won in X years (HELLO? Try being a Cleveland or Philly fan - at least you have the Pats) it's fans telling ME who I should be rooting for.

Anaheim is underrated, and I think they're the most dangerous team in the draw. They match up well with the Yankees, so will have to overcome their recent history of playoff chokery before they can be considered real contenders.

Then again, my preseason pick of Indians/Mets in the Series still has a chance of happening, so that's where I'm leaning.

The Angels aren't playing very consistently right now. They have a very young and eager with a lot of potential, but it seems like the closer we're getting to post-season, the more they seem to be rattled.

Hopefully, they'll calm down and play their kind of ball.

Replace the word 'Angels' with 'Tigers' in your response and you have a replica of 2006

Just when you think maybe the Phillies have straightened themselves out, they barely hang on against a team that has faded after jumping out to an 11-0 lead. Not as bad as jumping out to a 4-0 lead against Washington and then getting blown out, as happened to another team, but still have to be concerned about when the Phillies will walk into the chopper blades again. Wouldn't a Phillies/Cubs NLCS collapse the universe, or would both teams somehow find a way to screw up the series?

I'd be much more concerned about a Cubs/Indians World Series. The Phillies have won since color tv was invented, unlike the other teams.

That said, Philly isn't making it. The West will take the WC in the end.

And it isn't going to matter. Because I watched the end of the Cubs game last night. I saw the Cubs win one of "those games" that teams who are on the crest of the great wave always win. It reminded me of the night that Joe Crede belted 2 HR's to beat Cleveland in 2005, when the Indians had closed to within 1.5 games. So I'm going to come out and say it right now:

The Cubs are winning the World Series this year.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping that saying it out loud might have the effect

But really, watching that park last night, and watching them the last few weeks, it feels like deja vu. It's like watching the White Sox in 2005, as they went from down and out to unbeatable over a few weeks. They expect to win, the fans expect them to win, and somehow they find ways to win.

I'd be lying if I said they didn't have a chance at the pennant, because the NL, even more so than last year, is crap. Then again, if/when Chicago runs up against San Diego they have to deal with the expanded playoff schedule that adds an extra day or two to the first two rounds and allows the Pads pitching staff to gang up on the Cubs. San Diego winning the west would give us this matchup in the DCS with the Pads having home-field; as much as I will honestly be rooting for the Cubs now that the Champs are done, they'll be at a huge disadvantage.

Then there's the World Series, although everyone said last year the Junior Circuit would win in a walk. ;-)

The Angels have been one of the few teams to consistently have their way with the Yankees during the Joe Torre era and have ousted the Yankees twice in the last five years. I'd feel very confident with an Angels/Yankees series for that fact and because, for as over-the-hill as he might be, Garrett Anderson still eats Yankee pitching for breakfast.

But also because an Angels/Red Sox series would be disastrous for Anaheim. Red Sox bats absolutely feast on the Angels bullpen (they came back from 5 down in the 8th inning just a few weeks ago) and Angels ace John Lackey can't buy a win against the Sox, especially at Fenway. In fact, NONE of the Angels pitchers do well at Fenway...except for Ervin Santana, which is very odd, considering Santana has an 8.00+ ERA on the road.

If given the choice, give us the Yankees any day of the week and keep the Red Sox the hell away.

That's how I've been looking at it the past few weeks on the eliminate the Yankee viewpoint: As good as the Indians are, the Yankees have owned them since Jacobs Field opened, the '97 playoffs being the exception, while the Angels are the team the Yankees fear. Of course, Francona has decided that instead of winning the division and going for the best record he is instead going to hold community auditions and let everybody play. Thank God the Tigers blew 3 run leads in back-to-back games, or else it would be 5 up with 10 to go instead of 7 up with 10 to go. Mentally I've conceded the East to the Yankees though. Could be worse, could be the Metropolitans. And, since the sun shocking rose in the East yet again, Ben Sheets also injured himself again. I know, extremely shocking news.

I'm not sure I'd go quite that far, since the Mets seem to be doing their level best to gag away a division lead that they've had most all season. If the Phils win tonight, it's just a 1-game lead, and the Mets have one more in D.C.

The way they're playing, I'm not sure I see them getting healthy against the Marlins, and if Philly is in it going to Washington, it's going to be a VERY interesting last week and a half of the season.
