Surprised nobody's said anything! I was on WWE.com to see the Hornswoggle thing and noted this:

WWE has come to terms on the release of Raw Superstar and ECW Original Sandman as of September 11. We wish him the best in all his future endeavors.

Who had 2 months and 25 days in the pool?

Buy Kanye West's "Graduation" (The W at Amazon) and YOU can help send 50 Cent into retirement (and put some money into The W while you're at it)!

He was only entrance over, and even though they took away the unique parts of his entrance (smoking, beer) he still seemed over last night, to my surprise. But he brings nothing to the ring unless he is in ECW, so there is only so much they could do with him. TNA has no use for him, but that hasn't stopped them before. He should be able to do OK on the indy scene, and hopefully he saved some money, except the dough Paul still probably owes him. ; )

Sure looks bad that they release him the day after he appeared to seriously injure his...what was it, hamstring? I wonder if it was going to keep him out for at least 90 days anyway, and they figured what the heck, let's buy him out.

Sounds like Sandman also doesn't need the WWE money, as his bar's profitable and such. If rumors I read on the Internets are true, it happened pretty suddenly, but wasn't surprising:

World Wrestling Entertainment released former ECW World champion The Sandman today. Internally within the company, the release had been expected over the last 24 hours.

Sandman was hired by the company in June 2006 when they re-launched the ECW letters as a third WWE brand. After floating around the top of the ECW brand as a popular babyface, complete with a toned down version of his famous entrance, he was drafted to Raw several months back. He had most recently been seen last night against Santino Marella.

We'll have more on this later on PWInsider.com.

The guy was so close to winning the GM Battle Royal and the McMahon Bastard sweepstakes too.

I do think they underused the character a little.

We did all see this coming when The Sandman was drafted over to Raw, didn't we? The only thing odd was the timing, since it sure looked like he was starting a little program with Santino, rather than getting jobbed out of the company. Gives credence to the "injured, and we were about to job him out anyway" theory.

A pity, as Sandman, Sabu, Stevie and Balls have been/were better that I expected as a casual original ECW viewer. While I agree that a fair bit of WWE Sandman's overness was the entrance, he wasn't exactly given a lot of mic time or a meaningful push that would have shown how far he might have been able to climb. And of course the creative geniuses had to neuter the entrance (on the so-called "adult" show) to kill any chance he may have had.

Of all the originals, Sandman seemed to have made the most effort to succeed in WWE - in that he got in as good of shape as I ever remember him, did everything he was asked without complaining, and never got in trouble. But if he's got a nice business to fall back on, good for him.

I'll always remember him at One Night Stand I.

I thought it looked like he messed up his shoulder too on that...well, whatever that drunken move he attempted over the top rope was.

Fixed.

Personally I'll miss the guy. Of course he was awful, but he was so amusingly awful that it always brought a smile to my face. Regardless of the kitschyness of his performance, I always found his matches at the very least entertaining, and dug his persona even after they neutered it. It helps that for all his shortcomings and everything going against him, he was still pretty over.

Mark me down as sad to see him go.

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.

At least he got a Wrestlemania payday and a video game likeness payday ...

Should've never moved him from ECW ... I liked the Dreamer/Sandman team ...

First Eugene, now Sandman. I guess being in the ring with Vince doesn't guarantee long term job security.
