That's Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0807/5522.html

I support most of what W's administration did since he's been in office, but appointing AG was simply the biggest cronyist (is that a word?)move ever.

If Bush had a sense of humour, he'd nominate Harriet Miers as the next AG just to see if it would draw a perfect 100-0 vote against in the Senate.

As much as I dislike what has happened at Justice, I wish the sob had held on til the end. Now there is a strong likelihood of a confirmation zoo/bloodbath for all of 15 months. He never should have been appointed, "W" should never have allowed Justice to get to this awful state, but this could make things worse.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Solicitor General is just quietly kept on in the interim role until the elections. I guess the Dems could try and make something of it, but I think it could backfire on them. If the SG isn't just retained, I expect Bush to nominate someone as milquetoast as possible to try and avoid a fight. I think he knows he has nearly zero capital left, and is already testing party unity...no reason to risk totally breaking it.

Yeah, he can do that -- it requires a little runaround, but it's possible. Accoring to this page (politico.com):

So let's see. About 20 days until Gonzales' actual retirement (Sept. 17) + 210 days + another 210 when a nominee is anounced = 440 days, or about 70 days short of Bush leaving office. If the nominee is accepted, great; if not, Paul Clement runs out the term with plenty of room to spare.

U.S. and Iraqi officials believe that today -- Saddam's 66th birthday -- might be one of the last hurdles they face in convincing Iraqis that the Iraqi president will not return to power.
