Man, everything this summer is so good. It is a fantastic time to be spending a ton of money on comics.

Starlord #2: I won't tell you who, but in this issue someone dies. It's pretty fantastic because it shows just how expendable all these characters are in terms of accomplishing their mission. Now, we already know Peter's going to be around come the Conquest mini, but this does make me worry that they're thinking about killing off the rest of the characters in this book.

Quasar #2: This week Quasar outperforms Starlord, and I loved Starlord #2. The reason - Christos Gage, master of continuity. In this issue he brings up Moondragon's history, specifically the epic battle where she was possessed by the demonic Dragon of the Moon and battled the Defenders, killing several of them. And at the end of the issue, the Dragon is back. The Dragon, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, is incredibly powerful. The first time it was only defeated was when Valkyrie was granted the Odin-power and attacked with the full host of the Valkyrior. This is on top of Quasar having to deal with the Super Adaptoid, who now also has a solid bead on "savior" that she's been looking for. Incidentally, although the internet appears to be abuzz with hope that it is ROM Spaceknight (which I wouldn't be opposed to at all), I become increasingly convinced that it is in fact Adam Warlock.

Captain America #29: If you've been reading along, you get more of the same in this issue. Personally, I'm not as surprised as a lot of people that this title is this good without the main character, but that's just because the Falcon is a supporting character and he's flat-out awesome. I would probably read a Falcon ongoing, provided the right talent was on the book.

Cable & Deadpool #44: While Cable's obviously not DEAD dead, it's become apparent that he's not going to be around for a while. Issue 50's coming up, which would be as good a time as any for them to re-title the book. Anyhow, this is a pretty damn good Deadpool and Weasel story (and hey look! Wolverine's here too, if you're into that sort of thing.)

Sub-Mariner #3: Let me go off on a tangent here. In this issue, Wolverine mentions Osama bin Laden. Now, here's the deal. Marvel likes to pretend its characters live in the same world that you and I do, with the same basic political and social realities. The thing is, that really only goes so far. Trying to set real world terrorism in the same setting where Kang the Conqueror popped out of the future and blew up Washington DC a couple years ago doesn't work. Not only would someone like Wolverine or Mr. Fantastic be able to find bin Laden in about an afternoon, but the guy's strictly small potatoes compared to guys wielding super science or cosmic power or invisible death rays. It's just stupid. On the other hand, this issue also has Namor beating the fuck out of Wolverine for about five pages, after which he then dismantles a team of Sentinels. So I was still pretty happy with this purchase.

Modok's 11 #2: The plot thickens, Mentallo is possibly killed by a double agent, and the last page may reveal why Modok's been trying so hard not to say that he is designed only for killing. Two issues in, and this is genuinely fun stuff.

X-Men #202: Mr. Sinister has built his own Cerebro device. That's really going to be trouble. I'm going to lay off updating the Endangered Species back up from now on. Honestly, not enough happens in each chapter to talk about. Maybe I'll give my thoughts once the whole thing wraps up.

Astonishing X-Men #22: Really, another issue before the end of the year? Don't I feel special. Not that this has been a bad series in any way, I'm just not feeling like I'm getting X number of months worth of content every time an issue actually bothers to come out. Still, in this issue Whedon answers a question that's been bothering me since the Danger arc, and Cyclops does not die, no matter what they want you to think.

Thunderbolts #116: I've gotten to the point where I do like this book, I really do, but I still have no idea why Thunderbolts was co-opted for it. It literally has nothing to do with the previous iteration of the book outside a few characters, who are inconsistently written with regards to their previous appearances. I really don't know when, or if, I'm going to get over Marvel's edition of Suicide Squad being under the Thunderbolts banner. Anyhow, this issue introduces the new antagonist (protagonist?) Mindwave, and reveals that Mac Gargan doesn't get how the symbiote works at all.

Iron Fist #8: This is the best issue of Iron Fist so far, and they've been pretty damn good so far. The tournament of the Capital Cities of Heaven begins here, and the combatants are introduced. All of them are great designs, all of them are potent martial artists, but only one of them is named Fat Cobra.

Birds of Prey #109: Do you know who wrote this issue? Not Gail Simone. I mean, Bedard does all right, and even has a couple of genuinely good moments here. But the decline in quality is sharp and noticeable. I'll give him a couple more issues before I decide whether or not to give up on BoP.

Booster Gold #1: I really just picked this one up on a lark, and I'm glad I did. I'm not sure what I can say to help you decide whether or not this is up your alley, but it involves time and dimension travel, someone stealing the Supernova costume, and the promise that Booster's going to save the life of Ted Kord. Really, just pick it up, it's a lot of fun.

Gumby #2: And speaking of fun, this is possibly the most fun comic you will ever buy. I know it's been out for a while, but I read something in another review that convinced me to check it out myself. Here's what I read about it:

"In an effort to raise money to buy rocket-powered roller-skates to impress a girl named Cuddles, Gumby gets a job at the local circus. Owing to the fact that circus people are inherently evil, however, things go bad, but the day is saved when–and I swear to you that this is actually what happens–Johnny Cash descends from Heaven to help Gumby pass through a burnin’ ring of fire and rescue his gal."

If that doesn't convince you to buy this book, well then you and I are very different people. In fact, the only thing I can think to add to that myself is that the scene that appears on the cover does in fact take place in the book itself. It's really just a fantastic read, and it carries my highest recommendation.

I can't emphasize enough how awesome Booster Gold #1 is. If you're not convinced that the story possibilities here are endless, just look at those last few pages. Three words: Green Lantern SINESTRO! This will be on my permanent pull list.

Speaking of intriguing 52 spin-offs, if you haven't already, check out Black Adam #1. I thought that after Countdown pretty much ruined the big reveal of Black Adam getting his powers back that a mini-series would ultimately be pointless. I couldn't be more wrong and Adam's story is actually really interesting. I genuinely want to see where things go in the next issue.

I realize that he did his share of ass-kicking, but after the ending of Sub-Mariner #3, Namor had better come back with a HUGE vengeance next issue. You just don't do that to the guy and live.

Iron Fist looks very entertaining and I keep hearing nothing but good things about it. Unfortunately, since I'm late to the party, I'll have to wait for the trade. I'm just sorry I've missed out.

One more recommendation from me: Superman #666 may not be the best, but it's certainly the coolest single Superman issue I've read in years. Basically, he starts having a dream at the behest of an old Kryptonian Hell demon and Supes just gets a chance to cut loose on whoever he wants. And the way he does so is pure awesomeness. He kills Lex Luthor with a SUPER LOOGIE! If that doesn't scream "Must Have", I don't know what does.

Buy Kanye West's "Graduation" (The W at Amazon) and YOU can help send 50 Cent into retirement (and put some money into The W while you're at it)!

Actually, #8 is a really good jumping on point for Iron Fist. It's the start of a new arc, and there are only one or two story points from the previous arc that are still important, and they explain those in the issue.

I take it this new Gumby series isn't aimed at the kiddies?

This was a really good issue. Howard Chaykin's art is awesomeness personified. Chaykin has been doing his best work in years the past year or so, with his BLADE series that just ended. Damn shame no one else bought it. I'd liove for hime to do another BLACKHAWK series, or maybe draw the new SUICIDE SQUAD.

Chaykin has been doing some great work as mentioned, but Walt Simonson did the artwork on Superman #666, and he turns in a stellar job as always.

It is a good rule in life never to apologize. The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.

You know... I was disapointed. I don't really see the reason not to put spoilers because nothing really seems to have happened with any lasting effects. Green Lanterns!, Yellow Lanterns!, (Red Lanterns!) Comming soon!, Purple Lanterns (Star Saphire?)...
