ESPN's reporting that Michael Vick has agreed to a deal (sports.espn.go.com) and will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges. No word on his sentence, but prosecutors were looking for 12-18 months.
Originally posted by ESPN.comVick is charged with conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.
Vick's plea hearing will be Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m. ET, Martin said. Judge Henry Hudson said Monday that no details of the plea agreement will be made public before Vick's hearing.
I am fairly sure that if Tank Johnson gets 8 games and PacMan gets a year, that we will never see Mike Vick in an NFL Uniform as long as Roger Goodell is commish.
Now, void that contract and how much cap room do the falcons suddenly have?
While I know he was under Tagliabue's reign, I still, for the life of me, can't figure out how in the hell Leonard Little is still allowed to play in the NFL ...
Probably, but I wonder how much of a career he can have. Vick's strength is his athletic abilities, and that's going to fade away the next few years (though it probably won't be as bad if he's not playing.) At some point, it's not going to be worth it for teams to sign Vick - not just the issues in signing Vick, but trying to get him to work in your system, when there'd be younger/cheaper/easier guys available.
I think he'll get job offers, but he's going to be battling to hold the clipboard.

Is he a good enough athlete to play WR or RB? Of course. In fact, one of those coaches who has dreamed of using Vick in a non-QB capacity will likely get the chance, because I'd suspect a humbled Vick would agree to do about anything to be back in the league.
If Vick pulls a "I'm-only-coming-back-if-I-can-be-a-starting-QB", I'd suspect his phone will lay quiet for a long time.

Well, he did his suspension, his jail time, his commmunity service, and was humble throughout. Perhaps thats the only reason he still has a career.

Arena's more likely. The CFL may not be an option. If he's a convicted felon, would he be able to acquire a work visa to play in Canada?
This is a tragic story in so many ways. The least of which is watching a guy who had the ability to become a first-ballot HOF'er and multiple Super Bowl winner just piss it all away in such a horrific manner. It's truly a damn shame.

EDIT: I should have been clearer. Lawrence Phillips plead no contest, and was able to get a visa. From what I can tell, no contest means roughly the same thing as far as international travel is concerned, so Vick should be able to get a visa.

Lead defense attorney Billy Martin said Vick reached an agreement with federal prosecutors after consulting with his family during the weekend.
"Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made," Martin said in a statement. "Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter."
Even though nolo contendere pleas are part of a plea bargain, he has been put on record by his attorney that he will admit guilt.
As long as Vick stays in decent shape (and prison life shouldn't wear him out quite as much as a few seasons in the NFL), and he's smart enough to play the contrite *I'm reformed and a better person now* card, I see no reason why Vick won't be back in the NFL in four years or so. Unless Goodell flat out bans him for life, which I suppose is possible. Allegedly part of the issue is that he was gambling on the dog fighting, and any sort of gambling is strictly forbidden by NFL atheletes, so that may be the technicality that does him in.
I'm not quite ready to say he's done, but he is done for the forseeable future. Long live Joey Harrington!
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...

Nah. Arena QBs need to have fast and accurate releases. The scrambling part of the game is far less applicable.
He's done, never to play organized football again.
I hear that the bets he was putting down on these fights were 10, 25 thousand at the most? Probably more a reflection on the class of people generally involved in dogfighting, but Vick going down for this penny ante business reminds me a bit of a scene from "The Dirty Dozen", when Major Reisman (Lee Marvin) goes into Franco's (John Cassavetes) cell, and starts needling the stateside hoodlum (from memory)
Reisman: I hear you were a big wheel back in the states, a big man in the rackets.. Franco: I did alright for myself. Reisman: But then you get in the army, and the first thing you do is go AWOL, and start your own little crime spree over here in Britain. And then you kill a shopkeeper.. Tsk tsk. Franco: Yeah? So what's it to you? Reisman: Nothing, what did you have in your pockets when they caught you? Franco: I had enough.. Reisman (looking at report): Says here you had three pounds, eight shillings... (pause) Reisman, heavily sarcastic: That's almost ten dollars...
Vick's tossed away a $160 million contract for a hobby that likely wasn't even breaking even, for all the money he put into "Bad Newz Kennels".
My guess is that if Vick smartens up, he'll still be able to take what's left of his fortune and ask OJ if he needs a fourth. Hard for me to see a team taking the P.R. hit of bringing Vick in down the road. But you never say never.

Of course he also DID IT AGAIN a few years after the first 'accident'. The sort of scumbag who can get in a car drunk having already killed someone doing exactly that shoudn't be in the league period.
It's hard to have any real sympathy for Vick given some of the abhorent acts he has apparently commited, but some of the vitriol aimed in his direction is a little sanctimonious given peoples' apparent willingness to forgive others in the past for drugs/assault/guns/spousal abuse.
Ray Lewis for example arguably just had friends who were less willing to throw him under a bus first chance they got (see also Pacman Jones).

Jail time and a life long ban from the NFL would seem punishment enough without sticking him behind that line.

Not sure about you, but 25Grand is a large sum to the vast majority of Americans.
