Oh, fuck Hulk Hogan. Maybe I'm overreacting because Chris Benoit was my favorite wrestler, but somehow the "Thank God I'm still alive!" thing strikes me as being a crack at Benoit, especially considering he was the most recent high-profile case. (Even though there's no way it was roid rage, and that thread already has 451 replies so I don't want to get too off-topic.)

I dunno. For Hogan, that interview is remarkably humble. Other than the absurd and probably unfounded claim that he'll be starting his own promotion, which he's been talking about doing for nigh on ten years now, it was pretty lucid and free of his usual wild claims. I took the thank God I'm alive thing as a tacit admission that he too engaged in a lifestyle that may well have put him on that list of dead wrestlers. That's a huge step forward from claiming the goodness of his character inspired him to live better, or saying "we all smartened up and our priorities changed", which is what he was saying up to a couple years ago...
Bottom line, to have Hulk Hogan saying this is a good thing. Like him or not. He's not Marc Mero or Leapin' Lanny or anyone WWE can claim hasn't been around recently or didn't make it. No other big names are stepping up and admitting a problem exists.

And if Vince had thrown enough money his way in January, Hogan's mouth would still be glued tightly shut. Let's not kid ourselves - Hogan's not speaking out because of his dedication to the Unknown Wrestler.
To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Well, Vince DIDN'T pay Hogan hush-money in January, so I guess we'll never know that for sure, huh?
I totally agree with HMD, that last quote had nothing to do Chris Benoit and shouldn't be read into as such. For quite some time now, even way before the Benoit business, Hogan has expressed his gratitude for still being alive after all he's done in wrestling. It's a blanket statement that probably covers things he's expressed concern with before -- the excessive roid use, his partying and the weird situations and people who wanted to mess him up as he and Vince made the WWF national.
I think he said those hindsight revelations were one of the things that made him and Piper get along.
I don't get why a lot of people play catch-22 with Hogan. Benoit dies and everyone says, "Where's Hogan's comments, I wanna know~~~?!?!?" and then he says something, and no matter if it's true (or his opinion/view of truth) no one believes him. If it's absurd, everyone says, "Pfft, typical Hogan!" and dismisses it.
Well, when he came out and said "Nancy was into devil worship" it reminded me that Hogan is out of touch, and has truly not been one of "the boys" in about 20 years.
Dean! Have you been shooting dope into your scrotum? You can tell me! I'm hip!

Yes, Kevin and Nancy Sullivan were into devil worship 25 years ago during their Florida based wrestling days. Kevin was "The Prince of Darkness" and Nancy played "Fallen Angel", based off their then real-life Satan worshiping.

Does anybody know in what context Hogan said "Nancy was into devil worship"?
“He was peaceful and kept to himself,” he tells Us.
Hogan, who last saw Benoit in March, says he wonders what pushed the wrestler over the edge. "I think it had to be something personal, a domestic problem between him and his wife."
And Hogan tells US the wrestler’s wife (and WWE costar) had a dark side.
“She was into devil-worship stuff. It was part of her [wrestling] character, but [she was] somebody who gets so close to their character, someone who gets into their character too much. Sometimes these people believe their own publicity.”

I always figured it was just a part of their characters. Although, Sullivan played it perfectly. Were they really into it? I can't imagine WCW, as retarded as they were, making him booker several times if he was a devil worshiper.

I am not saying that it should, but I would imagine a major conglomerate like AOL Time Warner would not see it that way.
However, my question was if they were truly into it, or were just really good at playing their characters. I am sure plenty of people thought Undertaker was into devil worship over the years, but it turned out that he was just really good at playing the part.

A Major conglomerate like Time Warner (which, I am not sure owned WCW when Kevin was booker, but, anyway...) would be even less likely to consider religion when making any decisions. A big company's policy wouldn't look at an employees' religion. No way.
The reason Benoit left WCW in 2000 was because Sullivan was named Booker after they booted Russo the first time. I won't provide a link, because that is a pretty widely accepted fact if I am not mistaken.
How AOL-TW would react is debatable I suppose, but it is one thing to shy away from someone because they are Catholic, Buddhist, or Muslim, but it's a little different if the guy actually worshiped Satan. However, I don't think it has ever been confirmed that even Kevin was actually into that stuff. All I have read online says that it was just a part of his gimmick, and he played it well. I have not been able to find anything that states otherwise, but if someone can find confirmation that he is/was, so be it.
My original point being that Hogan is so far removed from the boys, that all he knows of Kevin and Nancy is a gimmick they had 20 years ago. He is not a good source for inside info, because he didn't live the same life as the average wrestler.

Yeah, I remember that. That was creepy too, 'cause I remember it started so casually like "Hey, sup, Eddie, I forgot to tell you 'bout this dream I had."
