So, the soon-to-be Queen of Keith was given another vacation week by her boss. This was totally unexpected by us. We have recently come into a good chunk of change and want to take a vacation. It would be from a Wednesday to a Sunday, and would have to be in the US. We want to try a big city or a beach. Advice?

Don't go to Vegas. I was there from July 4th through 11th and there were a few days that were 115 and over. Hot doesn't begin to describe it. If it wasn't for the fact I was there for my best friend's 30th birthday, I would have gone in a colder month...like March-ish for MY 30th.
Hmmm...big city/and or beach? I would reccomend Ft. Lauderdale. 30 minutes from Miami but without all the busyness of it, much better beach than MIA and you can get great fares through Spirit Air or Jet Blue. It's a place one doesn't think off but its a great lil romantic getaway with lots of sites less than an hour an half away including Orlando, West Palm Beach and of course MIA.
Another big city you can go that's very cool right now this time of year, Denver. Great sites, people, food and lots to do.
Oh...and where I would personally like to be right now in the US? NYC for the Braves series.

I love Vegas. I've been there twice, loved it both times. And I'm not even old enough to gamble.
But if it's still gonna be crazy hot out there, like Zeruel said, don't bother. You get so hot, you go inside to try and cool down and you can't. It's crazy.
Chicago. Go for a swim during the day. Enjoy some world-class dining for dinner. Let the Queen of Keith hit the Mag Mile. It is very hard to go wrong with Chi-town in summertime.
If you're willing to wait until late September (since you didn't note when this week would be), the Boardwalk Weekend at the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival (Sept. 28-30) is really very enjoyable. My mother and I went to it two years ago. One of the biggest attractions there is the professional sand-sculpting competition: the North American Sandsculpting Championship. They've got a couple good comedy clubs on the boardwalk; bands playing steel drums; (if I recall correctly) a coast guard museum, and some great food. Parades, a regatta, an 8K, a volleyball tournament, flag football, surfing classic, there's something for everyone.
Hampton Roads has some fun stuff in general: the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, the Mariner's Museum, Nauticus, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens are all must-see.
Even better, the weather is still summer-like for us in late-September, and the beach (crowded with tourists in July and August) is filled mostly with locals for the Neptune Festival. Airfare and hotels should be less expensive, too. And there are plenty of hotels lining the boardwalk itself.

No offense to the splendor that is VA beach (I've been there in September, it's very nice) But I'm sure the Queen of Keith would be a little upset if they didn't leave the state for their mini-vacation.
Y'know, I had not noticed that. That's a good point. I guess ultimately (as it does in every situation) it comes down to what she wants. If she's cool with staying in VA, Virginia Beach is very nice in September.

I'm just a big kid at heart and would choose the Orlando Florida area with all the Disney attractions, Universal Studios, Sea World, Cocoa and Daytona Beach, NASA Space Center, etc etc.
I'm a Disney fan, so I'd suggest Walt Disney World in Florida. Of course it's neither a beach nor a city, but there's lots to see and do there-even for those with no kids. Most people don't realize the property covers 43 square miles and besides the four parks has resorts, shopping, restaurants, golf, etc.

Well, shoot, I might as well go to Williamsburg and Richmond, and every where else I went to on vacation every year of my life growing up!!!!!!!!! AAAAHHHH!!!!
Sorry, eke. VA Beach has been played out for me.
spf, I'd love to go to Chicago again, as it's my favorite big city and we could see the Cubs, but we've been there like 100 times.
With all of the research we've done, I think we're going to take MedallaGuy's advice and go to Ft. Lauderdale. We'll be going after Labor Day, so it'll be cheaper and it looks pretty nice down there. The only thing I'm worried about is that it's smack in the middle of hurricane season.
As a citizen of Houston, come to the 4th largest city in the land! Enjoy our frog infestations and bird-sized mosquitos! And the construction and traffic clogged roads! And our wonderful, swampy, featureless and flat terrain and daily flooding rains! And our polluted beaches! And lets not forget, the former home of Enron and your hard working refineries polluting the air for your 3.00/gallon gas! I love it here! And the Chamber of Commerce will read this and hire me immediately!

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who hates the 'Christmas Shoes' song. My real peeve with Christmas songs is not the songs themselves, but the stations that play them.
