In his daily workout in a sports club in El Segundo, Clippers forward Elton Brand ruptured his Achilles tendon. He's expected to ultimately make a full recovery, but he'll miss at least the first two months of the season.

As a career 20-point, 10-rebound guy who's only missed six games in the past three years, Brand's absence could mean the Clippers start the season in a bit of a hole from which they'll have to recover-- no easy task in the strong Western Conference.

Thoughts?

ESPN was guessing Brand would be out until February (at least), meaning the Clippers' season is already over three months before it even starts. With Portland, Seattle, and Golden State all improving, this is not the season to start in any kind of "hole".

I ruptured my Achilles a few years ago and they told me I would be in a cast or boot for 12 weeks and doing physical therapy for three months before I was "normal". It turned out that I was in a cast for six weeks, and boot for four more, then I didn't need any physical therapy at all, and I was basically normal alrerady.

If he is a quick healer, he could be back sooner.

I ruptured my Achilles 17 years ago. It was six months before I could walk normally. I was casted for several weeks and then wore a special sneaker with a lift in the back which made it feel like I was walking downhill all the time.

I will be surprised if a professional athlete will be totally normal before 6-8 months.

There have been AMAZING advances in medical technology since 1837, dude.

(Oops. I read that quickly and thought it said 170 years. My bad. )

Anybody else in the club with me and pieman?

Comparing your experience with what Elton Brand will experience is a bit of a stretch.
He's going to have top notch physiotherapists/trainers/medical staff on tap, with as many sessions a day/week as he can handle. You guys probably had as many sessions as you/your health fund could afford.
That said, he's looking for a slightly better result too. His "normal" is vastly superior to yours. I am assuming here that you 2 aren't pro athletes in your spare time between posts :)

Don't look at ME. I was ship-shape in half the time they told me it would take.

Merc - that was my point. He's going to be expected to be playing professional basketball at a high level, where I was expecting to get back on the softball diamond.

And to make matters worse, with my injury, I waited 12 hours before going to the ER. I was playing Wallyball (volleyball on a racquetball court for those who don't know) and went down in a heap on a block attempt. Drove a manual transmission car home, showered, went to bed (didn't sleep one minute) and went to work the next morning. Since my Achilles was gone and I couldn't move my foot, I stubbed my toe on the stairs to the office building and nearly passed out. A nice co-worker brought me to the ER, where I was on the operating table within 2 hours.

And JJD - back then I was just lucky they didn't amputate my foot, given the Dark Ages medicine, eh?
