from 411mania.com:

WWE Monday Night Raw scored a 2.5 rating Monday night, down from the previous week's 3.4 rating. They scored a 1.83 in males 18-49, a 1.99 in males 18-34, and had a total of 3.4 million viewers. This is the lowest rating the show has done since moving back to the USA network. The above-mentioned demographic numbers were down a half a point from the average.

Could this all be fallout from the Benoit thing, cause I think the shows have generally been good...

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

If it were a steady ratings decline, then maybe, but for that many people to suddenly switch off...bizarre. Something must be up with that number.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Just had a quick check and it's the lowest non-holiday Raw rating in almost a decade. The strange thing is everyone I've asked has said there were no other major shows airing on Monday that would account for such a decline.

It seems quite out of the blue to be associated with Benoit as there hasn't really been any new breaks reported this week so you would think the decline would have happened earlier.

Seems kind of like a perfect storm:

-Benoit and his fallout slowly driving people away

-news about WWE being possibly called before Congress perhaps giving some parents extra incentive to nudge their kids from the tv

-lots of the top names not currently involved who had been around in the last few months (HHH, HBK, McMahon, Austin, Edge, Flair)

-A program on the top that isn't particularly interesting to many people (Cena is stale, and Orton is just not a draw to viewers right now it seems).

-Lack of direction in general making each show more inessential. Seriously, if you miss Raw any given week, are you in danger of missing anything really important, especially right now? I think the Benoit death not only took a major performer from the roster, not only made them have to change the way they present the product, but really altered the booking plans and it shows.

Benoit's death altered ECW's booking plans obviously, but RAW and Smackdown have been hit hard by losing Edge, Undertaker, and now Lashley and Jeff Hardy. They're scrambling to make Kennedy and Carlito, a couple of midcarders who have been mistreated on RAW for weeks and years, respectively, suddenly seem like threats to John Cena. Although a lucky pin on RAW, which I enjoyed watching, doesn't mean anyone actually buys Carlito as Cena's equal.

RAW will have Triple H back and Smackdown will have Rey Mysterio back at Summerslam and that will help to a degree.

As for why ratings are dropping, people could just have better things to occupy their time with in these last few hot weeks of summer.

If ratings stay down next week, I'm interested to see what form Vince pushing the panic button will take.

So everyone was fine with him on top for the first ten months, and then suddenly they all got sick of him and changed channels the same week?

Canadians are probably still p.o.ed how the WWE treated them after the death of Benoit with cancelling the shows without make up dates etc. Hopefully when Triple H and Undertaker return ratings will go up again. Anybody know the Smackdown rating? Is it that bad?

Remember, they also planned the death of Vince McMahon storyline to be a major piece of the summer booking. That got squashed when Benoit died. Whatever they are doing now is in some way or another the Plan B booking.

Considering that they hadn't officially lost Jeff Hardy and Lashley before the show aired, I can't say that their departure could have had any effect on the rating this week, which is bizarrely low.

Oh well. Let them fret over the causes and solutions! Maybe they'll throw some money at the Rock to give the ratings a spike.

At this point in time I doubt offering Dwayne Johnson 25% of the company would be enough of an enticement to get entangled with Vince right now.

Perhaps this could be the moment of desperation that makes VKM pick up the phone to the Hogan family residence though...

A little context (from Scherer):

The 2.5 is the lowest non-holiday rating since October 27, 1997, which was a 2.3. That show was a taped Raw (taped on October 21st) and headlined by WWF World Champion Bret Hart vs. Ken Shamrock, Intercontinental Champion Owen Hart vs. Ahmed Johnson and WWF Tag Team Champions The Legion Of Doom vs. Los Boricuas. It also had one of Jim Cornette's rants about how horrible WCW was.

That same night, a live WCW Nitro did a 4.3 headlined by World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Diamond Dallas Page, Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage, U.S. Champion Curt Hennig vs. Booker T, Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Jericho and Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio vs. Dean Malenko.

That almost seems like a lifetime ago. To think that I was watching 4 hours of wrestling on Monday night back then - and now I barely follow the storylines online... it's almost like I want to ask Vince why he deliberately alienated fans like myself from a product that we WANTED to watch. Anyway...

The problem is those aren't long-term solutions. They might pop the ratings up once or twice - but you can't reasonably put a title on Hogan at this point.

I think the real test will be when HHH comes back. If things stabilize after that, then at least they'll have some time to figure out a long-term plan. But I think - even if a fluke - that rating sets the "low bar" a hell of a lot lower than any one thought it could go.

If Rock keeps getting movies like Doom, and this turd where he plays a football player/father that is coming out soon, maybe we will see him back in the future. His career is definitely at a crossroads right now.

As for the ratings, I will reserve judgment until this develops into a pattern over a few weeks. But with a lack of star power and a stale champ, I am not surprised. Even if ratings stay down, once we see the return of some of the bigger names from injury, they won't stay down long.

That would have no effect on the American ratings.

As far as I know, WWE was hurt bad (as far as Canadian ratings go) when Smackdown moved to Fridays, and worse when Raw jumped from TSN to The Score. "Bad" as in the Raw rating immediately dropped to something like 1/3rd what it had been doing on TSN. I don't have a source in front of me, though, so I could be way off.

As someone who was supposed to attend one of the canceled Canadian shows, I'm not really that broken up that they didn't announce make-up dates. Between the Benoit tragedy and WWE's ignorant handling of it, I am perfectly fine with not giving them my money.

I figure the decline in Raw viewership is attributable to numerous factors, all of which are coming to a head at once:
- the Benoit thing kinda made all of wrestling less fun
- WWE's handling of the Benoit situation has revealed the organization as a whole to be clueless at best or, more likely, just completely full of shit
- stale product
- so much television and so many PPVs that even if you really like wrestling, you'll probably wind up skipping some of it
- numerous top guys out hurt (HHH, Michaels, Rey, Edge, Undertaker, Lashley) or dead (Benoit, Guerrero) or just plain gone (Angle, Jericho, Brock, Trish, Lita)
- UFC's emergence; it's basically pro wrestling except it's a genuine sport, currently a lot more popular than WWE, the owners appear to actually care about the drug issues, and it doesn't leave you embarrassed to be a fan or afraid that someone will catch you watching it

There's obviously most likely (how's that for a infirm statement?) backlash from Benoit and lack of big names contributing here, but I think it's time to blow some things up.

Reduce Smackdown to an hour, put ECW out of its misery and kill the brand extension. World champ, IC champ, tag champs and ladies champ. Go back to twelve PPVs a year, with a couple slightly cheaper and only two hours long. Cut dead weight from the roster.

There's also probably something generational here as well. I remember back when Raw started beating Nitro again where half of high school would anticipate Raw every Monday night, and discuss it heartily the next day. A couple years go by and guys scatter to college and other things become priority. Obviously this isn't true of everyone, and others come up to take their place, but with how drab the industry has been the last couple years I wonder sometimes if newer fans aren't being generated like they used to and as older fans slip away we get ratings like this. I can't think of a reason for anyone to become attracted to the WWE, or, for that matter, older fans to care at the moment. It's the mid 90's all over again, only without competition from Atlanta.

It's still 3.4 MILLION viewers. And while I'm thinking of it, if WWE could ever fix this pissing contest they are having with Time Warner (or Brighthouse, for me and others), they could move this whole wrestling viewing pleasure to 24/7 and tell the Hammers and Scherers of the world to go suck a cock.

Ratings mean nothing when you are in the PPV business. Meltzer made some good points when trying to explain the upswing in UFC - it's the amount of people you get to pay for your show, not the rating.

TUF had like a 1.4 rating at it's highest, I think. But a lot of them PAID for the money shows - opposed to WWE's 3.8's and low domestics. TNA's rating is always a 1.0, and no one gives a damn about their payoffs.

If the buyrates for SS are good, anyone in their right mind should care less about RAW's rating. That won't be the case, because Vince is crazy and the rest of us have been conditioned to think "low ratings = bad business".

Make the deal with 24/7, pull the shows from TV and have everything In Demand. Paid for. It would be best to start planning for 5 years from now, instead of hotshotting madness for no reason

A few thoughts on Raw's lowest ratings since 1997:

1) Didn't TNA recently prove that ratings = Kurt Angle in a speedo? Correct me if I'm wrong, but RAW = no speedos, no Kurt Angle.

2) There's too much wrestling on TV right now. If you try and catch it all, your nights are basically tied up until the weekend.

I miss the days when I could catch an absurd amount of wrestling in one day -- first hour of WCW, two hours of WWF (switching back and forth when things got dull) and then back to the three hour Nitro repeat around midnght. Yeah, six hours of wrestling in one day sounds pretty bad, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, and the rest of the week was free.

Before I dated wrestling. Now I'm married to it.

3) Crime Tyme's skit went on *forever*. They weren't just stealing sneakers, they were sucking the very soul out of my dying body.
