With no real obvious candidates, and no time to build to a World Title main event at the GAB anyway, why rush to put the title on anybody? Why not have a good 'ol fashion tournament to crown a new champion, with first round matches starting at the GAB? You could just convert the Batista/Khali and Hardy/MVP matches to first round matches (and the Hardy/MVP match could still be for the U.S. title as well). The finals could be scheduled for Summerslam.

LAREDO, Texas A new World Heavyweight Champion walks tall among us this night, and his name is The Great Khali.
No, youve read this right The Great Khali now holds sports-entertainments most elite prize, one that dwarfs even his 7-foot-3, 420-pound frame. During tonights taping of SmackDown in the Laredo Entertainment Center, he won the title in true colossal fashion, by being the last man to stand inside the ring after an excruciatingly hard-fought 20-Man Battle Royal. The historic contest had been ordered by SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long, who earlier this evening had ordered an injured Edge to surrender the World Heavyweight Title.

The World Heavyweight Title is now the top belt in the whole industry? What?
So what does this say about the WWE Title and its lineage?
Eh, J.R. has alternately referred to both the WWE Title and the World Heavyweight Title as "the richest prize in our sport"-- see WrestleMania 20 as an example of the latter.
Of course, the title is only as good as the person who holds it, and without adding spoiler tags or anything, I'll just phrase my opinion that the title change is a significant step in the wrong direction.

That's really a lousy call by the WWE to put the strap on

Khali(it's not a spoiler when it's on the WWE's frontpage). I know they are in a tough spot because they hosed the roster in the draft, but c'mon the guy can't put on a good match and he's not even a good talker. I'm really bummed out by the call.
- it's a spoiler until it airs on TV, that's how that works
- if you are hoping to get to Friday without finding out who's the new champion of SmackDown, you need to get off the internet for the week. Or at least stay far away from any and all wrestling sites. You're not going to get much help on this one.
"Putting it one Batista would make him look weak for sure. Now that Taker and Edge are gone, he finally wins? That's not good."
Throw in a heel turn and it's possibly the most brilliant idea the E could come up with, seriously.
Monster of a man, couldn't beat either Taker or Edge, has to sneak in and swipe the belt. Then he cheats to win matches, et cetera. Heel heat like a mother.
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.
It hasn't reached it's depths yet, but with the injuries/questionable decision making that has been occurring, is anyone else getting that good old WCW Summer of Suck '99 vibe coming out of Stamford?

Geeze. I remember WCW. I watched WCW. THIS is no WCW. I like how people noe equate the WWE pushing "hosses" with a crumbling at the seams WCW. The WWE is fine (a bit unlucky with injuries), WCW in '99 broke spirits, crushed moral and cause sane wrestling fans to pray for a a Higher Power (not Vince) to strike down the bookers.
About the title choice, I think it's a good move. Performer in question had some good high profile matches this year, logically it makes sense and it leads to some intriguing match-ups. It's actually a really good short term fix.

Also he's been pushed as a monster since he showed up, and so it gives instant legitimacy (in the storyline, at any rate) to whoever beats him for the belt.

Agreed, IF they turned him heel. But they showed earlier this year that they are not willing to do that when he feuded with Taker.
I guess it is redundant now, as the E chose to go in another direction.

But what will be the reaction if Batista wins the belt at the PPV from (HE WHO WAS CROWNED CHAMPION) at the tapings? Would he still look weak?

Dean! Have you been shooting dope into your scrotum? You can tell me! I'm hip!

Do we know what's happening now with Kane's title shot? Last Smackdown!, he was the number one contender, not Batista.
Originally posted by AlexDidn't we have a similar thread when Edge won the title? As I recall, the ruling was it isn't a spoiler if it's on the front page of wwe.com
MY ruling was since they actually came out and said it on (ECW) TV, it wasn't a spoiler anymore...so I started a thread just to let everybody know we were going to talk about it here (but I also made sure the subject of the thread didn't actually come out and say it, just in case people wanted a warning to not read the forum for a few days).
It's still a spoiler if all you're doing is watching TV, so let's try to be good people and keep it under wraps until Friday.
By the way, talking about who DOESN'T have the belt is as much of a spoiler as talking about who HAS the belt, so c'mon.
** SPOILER in above article of who the new World Champion is **
wwe.com has put up an article about the World Title Curse on Smackdown. According to them, every World Champion since Batista's arrival in 2005 has been sent to the DL within 6 months of their reign starting.
Ok, so hell has just about frozen over. Sable's back and now what? Bret Hart, that's what. I am saying it here and now. Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XX.
