.. in a trade with the A's, just announced by Cubs GM Jim Hendry on tonight's local broadcast. It's Kendall and cash for Bowen (designated for assignment earlier today) and a AA lefty named Blevins. I've liked Kendall since he came up with the Bucs, and if he can still defend we really don't need him to hit much. Kendall is 33, so hopefully he still has a couple of good years.

An encouraging sign for those of us Cub fans who figured that the ownership flux would preclude any deals of note. Now get Zambrano signed, fools

(edit: added specifics of trade as they became available)

They just traded for a catcher hitting 226! 226! An on base of 261! A slugging of 281! That's insane.

I'm not defending Koyie Hill or Rob Bowen's performance, because they haven't hit, but why do a deal where you're paying millions of dollars more for a player who looks done?

If they traded Barrett because of defense, why would you ever pick up Kendall?

They should've just given Soto a chance to go at it. If they could've spent money, why didn't they trade Jacque Jones earlier? I don't get this at all.

He's hitting something like .295 in his last 25 games, though. His lifetime average going into this season is over .300 and his lifetime OBP is about .380...

I'd rather take the chance that he bounces back to between where he is now and where he was, keep Soto and send Koyeeeee back.

Plus, Rob Bowen swings a bat like a girl. A girl with two mangled arms who's deathly afraid of anything made of wood.

Always liked Kendall with the Bucs - he's been away from my sight for awhile - but, as a "rent a player" (I assume he's a Free Agent after the season), he's probably worth a Bowen. and some prospect. Although I'd prefer getting Pudge - Next season.

Plus, as I recall, he doesn't strike out much, and he crowds the plate. I like guys who do that.

I love this. You know you're getting a high-quality player with some real legs on him when people are relieved that he's going to be a free agent, and that makes it a better deal than if he had 3 years left.

SI says last year of contract; he's making $13.4 million this year, but that's going to be subsidized by the A's, and I think the Pirates have to pay a big chunk of that as well. For those keeping score, that would be the second sign of a high-quality player, when three teams are chipping in.

Echoing what's been said, but pointing out that he's still better offensively than either Hill or Bowen (who was a whopping 2 for 32 while with the Cubs, and one of those hits was in his first AB).

Having time to reflect, I guess that this really isn't costing the Cubs anything, so I renew my objection that the ownership situation is going to keep the club from making any substantial moves until the sale is voted through by MLB. Which sucks for us.

Remember that Geovany Soto was an option (a) when Henry Blanco went down, only journeyman Koyie Hill got the call instead, and also (b) when Barrett was traded, only we took journeyman Bowen from SD instead of some minor league toss-in. AAA All-Star or no, I think that's all you need to know about what the Cubs think of Soto.

Oakland appears to be selling it as "make way for our young catching prospect", and getting back a 24-year old A/AA reliever (plus Bowen) doesn't appear to argue against this being a dump on their part. The trade gives the Cubs an experienced receiver for the stretch run, and as stated before - there's nowhere to go but up for offensive production over Bowen/K Hill/Soto. Don't discount the slow rehab of Blanco as a factor in encouraging them to bring someone in.

Probably as good as Hendry could do, given the financial constraints I'm presuming he's under. I wonder if Sam Zell is asking around to see if the Wahoo Express bus from "Major League" can be had on a 3-month rental...

It isn't fair to blame this on Sam Zell. The Cubs are going to be sold beyond Zell, and as a businessman he knows it is just not prudent to add very large liabilities just before selling.

Also from a baseball standpoint, it seems more fair to let the team be built at the new owners and their chosen baseball guys decide to build it. Yes, Zambrano is, when he decides to have his head in the game, one of the best pitchers in the NL. But to say simply because of that the new owners should have to be on the hook for anywhere from 75-100 million in extra spending seems problematic.

Besides, if Cuban buys the Cubs then you can relax and enjoy the $200 million payroll he'll bring with him.

Soto had been playing a lot of first base at Iowa while working off an injury.

I also congratulate the ChiSox, but bah... as far as I'm concerned they don't deserve to ever win the World Series ever again. I know, the Black Sox scandal happened 63 years before I was born and therefore I should get over it.
