Last year I arranged for myself and friends the first annual dorkathalon. Below are the events we used:
1) Bowling
2) Risk
3) Trivial Pursuit
4) Poker
5) Darts (cricket)
6) Billiards (Stripes n solids)
7) Video games (NHL, mariokart, mario party)
8) Mini Golf
9) Card games (hearts, rummy, casino (fun game, PM me if you are interested in how to play))
10) Home run derby (used softball, set up a "home run distane" everyone got 10 outs)

I had some friends that didn't want to participate because some of the events weren't "dorky enough." I need suggestions for replacement events that would up the dork ratio but still be interesting for most and allow for a clear winner for each event.

You're having a dorkathon without Croquet? Anti-dork!

I also suggest: Mario Party is good, but NHL is too tough for Dorks - may I suggest Jeopardy or Millionaire. Dorks are smart. Just not coordinated.

and

If you could get bumper pool, now we'd be TALKIN'!

I'd do the home run derby, but with a wiffle ball. That would rock.

Posting on the W(einerboard)!!!!

6) Billiards (Stripes n solids)

That's 8 ball! I like the bumper pool idea, but that's a tough table to find. Play bank pool with the stripes and solids. You'll be too drunk for 7,8 and 9. But PERFECT for Home Run Derby!

I agree with AWARulz that we dorks are more about the brains than the coordination. In fact, to me even a whiffle home run derby doesn't sound very dork-like. (Fun, but not dork-like.) Games like Scrabble and Boggle--those are dorky!

And nothing's more dorky than role-playing games. Of course, real RPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons take a long time and don't have a clear winner. So a great substitute would be Munchkin or one of its spinoffs such as Star Munchkin or Munchkin Fu. They're really fun RPG parodies in the form of card games. You'll want to brush up on the rules a bit ahead of time, but newbies should be able to pick up on it quickly and it's fun for non-dorks, too. http://www.sjgames.com/munchkin/game/

The types of cardgames like Munchkin are great, yeah.
Very geek and dorkish but actually great fun.
Though a game could last quite a long time and might never end up with a winner. BUt that really shouldn't stop you.

Make a trivia quest about tv shows and movies such as Xena, Transformers, Hercules, Buffy, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc etc.

Poker doesn't sound like it belongs in a dorkathon. Especially these days.

Oh, fastest to solve a Rubick's cube? Oh, ok. that might not get you a clear winner.

I'd assume many table top games are quite dorkish too.
Djenga (sp?) and that sort of thing. Yahtzee!

Two big dork games that I know of are Settlers of Catan and the card game Euker. Now, I don't personally care for either game myself, but I know lots and lots of people that are very big on them.

What about a spelling bee? I mean, that is about the dorkiest event I can think of.

By the way, if you lived near me, I would pay to enter into this event. Sounds like an awesome time.

I was thinking the same thing! Sounds like a blast! I would like to add "debate which comic hero would win in a fight with another comic book hero" to the list.

Recreate one of the card games from a Final Fantasy game. Any other games from console RPGs would work too.

Dorks can't play it - they are uncoordinated and don't know the songs - except "oops I did it again"

If you MUST play DDR - you need DDRMax2 with the beginner mode.

If you feel compelled to play a game with a floor pad, find Twister.

This sorta' bridges the gap between board games and video games, but howabout a game of SIMON

Yeah,a card game like Magic, VS. or Anachronism would be a good fit. Or a miniature figure game, like HeroClix, WarHammer or whatever. Those are definitely dorky (with bolded text!), bBut it would take some time for noobs to learn all the quirky rules.

Howabout a radio-controlled car race? Notably the cheesy/cheapy types that "turn in reverse".

Radio Shack needs to be involved in this, somehow. Either by using some of their goofy games, or else have a Final Geek Overtime Challenge: walk into Radio Shack and whoever gets a job interview WINS.

Nah. Becuase any decent dorkathon is going to have some people who already work at the Shack attending.

By the way, when is this event - just look it up on your palm pilot..

Hey, being a dork doesn't always mean bad co-ordination, you know.

If you had coordination, you wouldn't be one. You'd be hanging with babes, instead of planning a dorkathon.

Source: nearly 50 years of dork experience. Nearly 28 of that with a woman who loves dorks - ok, puts up with dorks.

(and also can't play DDR)

I'm not sure, but I think I was just insulted here.

Anyways, thank you for all the good ideas. We are currently in the "finding a weekend that everyone can give up the whole weekend to participate in the event" mode. We have so many good ideas coming in we may end up changing this to a summer games/winter games sort of thing (winter games of course including a snowball fight). I am also trying to get some sort of trophy for this. One of my parents friends were moving and was throwing out a bunch of old trophies (including bowling) so I grabbed them and may convert them into something for this. If not that, then design something else and make it myself. We do not have anyone from radio shack involved, but we do have a couple of IT guys, a pastor in training, a cell phone salesman, and a scientist(me) among others so that's gotta count for something. Also, if you guys dig the idea feel free to steal it. I give full permission to steal the idea in the name of dorkery. Hell the original reason I started this last year was to try and get all my friends together since some of them have wife/kids now so its harder to get them out for anything less than an event of some kind.

Edit: Just thought of an event-internet scavenget hunt! Now I just need to think of things to scavenge. As far as timeline, this is looking like a late August thing. (I was hoping for Thanksgiving weekend but one of the people that really wants to do this has a pregnant wife due then.)
