Making up for its delayed arrival to Australia's Virtual Console, the TurboGrafx-16 will debut in the world's smallest continent next week with eleven releases! Hudson's VC site lists that over a third of the games will be shmups -- no big surprise there -- but classics like Dungeon Explorer, Military Madness, and Bomberman '93 are also set to appear at the system's opening ceremony.

The US, having been spoiled with dozens of TG-16 releases since the Wii's launch, will receive only one PC-Engine title next Monday: Dragon Spirit, an impossibly hard, vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up in which you pilot a blue dragon.

Nintendo has announced the games that will be hitting Japan's Virtual Console in the month of July, and there are some interesting things happening, including a first-party Nintendo game that only a few Japanese players ever got their hands on.

On Nintendo 64, Paper Mario has indeed been bumped back to July, where it joins Wave Race 64 (right). Notable for being the first post-launch Nintendo 64 title, Wave Race was actually excellent and worth the download. And what else needs to be said about Paper Mario?

On the Super Famicom, the most interesting release by far is Famicom Bunko: Hajimari no Mori (Famicom Book Collection: The Forest of Beginnings, or something like that), one of Nintendo's last Super Famicom titles. Released in 1999 (!), it's a graphic narrative adventure with mini-games that was only available through the Nintendo Power download service, where consumers brought blank, rewriteable Super Nintendo cartridges in to convenience stores and downloaded games to them for a low price.

Militia, an early Namco Super Famicom game, and Shiren's Mysterious Dungeon 2 are also on their way this month.

On Famicom, we've already got two of the games here in America: NES Open Tournament Golf and Castlevania. Flappy and Star Soldier join the pack. Both of them will be out this coming Tuesday, June 3.

Also on June 3 are two awesome action games: Super Shinobi II for Mega Drive and Splatterhouse for PC Engine.

On the Mega Drive side for the rest of the month, there's Ichidant-R, a spinoff of Bonanza Bros.; Treasure classic Dynamite Headdy; and the original Shining Force.

Rounding out the PC Engine lineup are five (count 'em!) more games: Makai Hakkenden SHADA, Power Sports, Dead Moon, Appare Gate Ball, and Power League 4. Lots of sports!

Hudson, as is their brave and wonderful choice, has also announced the American Virtual Console lineup for the TurboGrafx this month, which includes Air Zonk, Drop Off, Silent Debuggers, and (omg) Devil's Crush.

But wait: there's more! The MSX computer games Eggy and Aleste have been sitting on the release list forever, with tentative dates of "Spring 2007." But since spring 2007 is long gone, they've been moved back to "Summer." And the price on Eggy (though not Aleste) has dropped from 800 points to 700. So hey -- if they're messing with the prices, that must mean they're close to release, right?

That's all your Virtual Console news for this month. I doubt that Monday will bring us Paper Mario here in the US [it didn't - JK], but maybe they'll have some surprises on tap.

Jeez, SMB2 just came out now? I know why Nintendo doesn't want to release all the games at the same time, but I would have thought that it would have come out before now.

I saw that Japan is going to get a few MSX games over the summer. I'm assuming that's for their region only. And the wikipedia article on the Virtual Console says that Neo Geo games will be available at some point. That will be interesting.

I have no idea why, but I'm more excited about SMB2 than any other previous release.

And to think I was complaining about the VC's slow week two weeks ago. In the last 8 days, they've rebounded with F-Zero X, Street Fighter II Turbo, SMB2, and Ecco 2. Gotta love it. Keep those hits coming!

I finally saw one out on the shelves in a store today. I'm not in the market for one, but have always glanced when I've been near the video game aisle just to see if they have any available (never know when a weird nerve might be struck and I leave the store with one), and finally saw 3 sitting on the shelf. I was able to resist the urge to buy one however. I'm sure I'll get one for when my kids are a little older, but for now will stick with the GameCube.

Glad you folks are having such fun with 'em though and thanks for the updates on new titles available for the VC. That's the kind of info that makes it hard to pass up on the Wii when I see them in the store.

I love the commercial they used to air for SMB2 (when it came out on GameBoy). "Pick Up Your Enemies... and Throw thema t your Enemies!"

The quality PS3-exclusive games are also starting to pile up. If you pick up a PS3, you can also help yourself to Uncharted (and its sequel), Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, and Little Big Planet and come away a happy camper.
