I saw the Biggio thread, and figured someone should also point out that Frank Thomas hit his 500th home run yesterday. I thought Frank was a HOF'er before that, but hopefully getting the nice round number will remove any hurdles from him getting in.

I think with HOFs, I think they're going to have to rely less on the numbers. Thomas at 500 HR is a better HOF candidate than Sosa at 600 HR, in my opinion.

Agreed, plus Thomas' biggest seasons came before the offensive explosion. I think the only thing that might get in his way is his relative worthlessness defensively. But his career OBP is well over .400 (16th all-time) OPS is damn near 1.000 (11th all-time...though it's probably not gonna get any higher) and he's got six seasons where he was top-5 in MVP voting, including two #1's, and 9 seasons (8 straight) of 100+ runs scored. He's also got one of the better nicknames in the game.

I'd vote him in.

PS. Did you know Sammy Sosa has a worse career OPS than Tim Salmon? As of June 29th 2007, 1:50 pm, PST that is. I should also note it's a hair under Will Clark's as well ;)

Just read an interesting tidbit about Frank Thomas. Both he and Jeff Bagwell were born on the same day(5/27/68)and were both league MVP's in 1994. And they were also involved in the two milestones yesterday (although Baggy was obviously not an active player).

I agree about the numbers part not necessarily indicating HOF potential... Thomas was a 2-time AL MVP and certainly at least as, if not more than, a better candidate than Sosa, with 100 less homers.

Two #1's, and a #2 when he lost out to Jason Giambi. In my book, Frank is a first-ballot famer. His numbers might not measure quite as well as other players who will be on the ballot in the next 10 years or so, but The Big Hurt was a dominant hitter in the AL for a prolonged period. Even as a north-sider, there was a time when a channel flip past a Sox game was an automatic stop, if Thomas was coming up that inning.

And it shouldn't hurt him with the voters to be the primary face of anti-steroid use during the Congressional hearings. Assuming he doesn't have a Palmiero-esque moment, of course. But Frank has always been big and beefy, unlike McGwire, Sosa and Bonds who all started out ... smaller than they ended up.

And how cool is it getting tossed from your milestone game?

Not really...ESPN showed big Frank's first homer the other day, and he was in fact very skinny there.

He was skinnier, but even then he was 230 pounds or so, just spread over the frame of a man 6'5". The thing with Frank is that his body never made any odd changes. He came up at just past his 22nd birthday, and steadily grew the next few years, and stayed pretty much the same until his mid to late 30's when he put on weight just from the injuries and getting older and fatter. There was never anything where you watched him balloon 20 pounds in an offseason, or watched his hat size expand by 20% or anything, or suddenly get much bigger in his mid 30's. His body progression followed a much more natural and plausible trajectory.

The similarities between Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell are amazing. In addition to having the same birthday, winning the MVP the same year and both being a part of milestones on the same day they were drafted the same year and signed within 24 hours of each other.

At the end of the 2005 season both their teams (Astros and White Sox) were in the World Series but even though they had been with that team their entire career they had no impact because neither could play because of injuries.

Baseball Reference also has them as the most similar players to each other for four consecutive years. At the end of 2005 (Bagwell’s last season) their per 162 game average was:
Bagwell 114 R 174 H 2 3B 34 HR 115 RBI
Thomas 109 R 175 H 1 3B 38 HR 122 RBI

They even have the same amount of letters in their name (first and last name or full name).

I know that being a good person isn't exactly a factor in the Hall of Fame but I'm glad with Thomas and Biggio (and Bagwell for that matter) we'll be debating whether they should be in the Hall of Fame based on nothing other than their careers and accomplishments and not whether or not we think they cheated and how much they cheated and how good they were before they were cheating.

Sheesh, what else are they going to put in the late-night / early-morning non-Sportscenter slots come summer? World's Strongest Man 1956? I can only hope not. It should be back to its normal rotation by then.
