Did I say Ottawa in 5? I really meant to type Anaheim. Really.

Like many others I know, I can't believe how wrong I was about this series. Anaheim utterly dominated Ottawa. It had, in the end, very little to do with Giguere in nets or the Pronger/Niedermayer/Beauchemin trio on defense and everything to do with Anaheim playing the kind of hockey as a team that could beat the high-flying Senators.

As mentioned in another thread, I have no problem watching a true team like the Ducks and especially guys like the Niedermayers, Pronger and Selanne hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup. They certainly earned it.

Here's hoping that an Anaheim win truly does raise the profile of hockey in the US, especially California.

Wow, awesome series, awesome game. Feels so good to be a Ducks fan right now. I'm especially happy for Selanne, who is probably done after this year.

I was gonna say this in the prediction thread but I wasn't gutsy enough, and its easy for me to say this now, but I don't understand what some were thinking picking the Sens in so few games- even a sweep (I'm looking at you, CRZ :), though 6 of 8 W's picked the Sens). I looked at predictions from sportsline and ESPN with wonderment, as most teams were picking against the Ducks as far back as the Canucks series (now looking, in the QUARTERFINALS, all five of the sportsline hockey analysts picked the Wild over the Ducks). I don't know, for as well as they played for most of the season and for as balanced as they are (not to mention they are excellent at playing their kind of game), I would not have counted them out.

But maybe that's the homer in me talking.

the Ducks dominated on all fronts (even in Game 3 they were not out of the game for the longest time) and earned the Cup.

Great to see Scott pass it to Rob and from Pronger to Teemu.
Who would have thought 2-3 years ago that Selanna would be a dominating player again?
Great performance by the entire team though. From the young kids (on CBC they kept harping on the fact that half of them were undrafted or rejects from another team) to the veterans, everyone played hard and played their best.

If they manage to keep this team together, they will be a force to deal with for the next few years.
Ofcourse the same goes for the Senators. Up until the finals they played great hockey as well. There is always next year for them

I got a kick out of Bettman last night. Knowing full well he would take a hit from the fans during the trophy presentation, he was prepared with his retort 'But I'm bringing good news'.

I wish I could get into the NHL all year long like I can at Stanley Cup time. I love the playoffs. Congrats Ducks.

It was a painful series and the outcome seemed never in doubt. I'm happy for the Duck organization and franchise, as no one outside of Scott Neidermayer had won the Cup before. I'm also happy for one of my favourite journeymen, Ric Jackman, whose career I've followed for a few years (why, I have no clue).

The Senators gave it a good fight. I can't believe I'm praising him, but Alfredsson had a lot of heart and guts last night. The effort he gave on that second goal was amazing.

Congrats to both teams.

Well, I picked Sens in 5 in that thread for reasons of mathematical pattern since that was how all of their series had ended, although realistically I was thinking Sens in 6 or 7. Which was no slight to Anaheim, just based on how Ottawa had played all playoffs long. But turns out Anaheim was perfectly built to undo Ottawa just as Ottawa was perfectly built to undo Buffalo. To say nothing of them being a great team all year long, etc.

Seeing Teemu win it was really great. Seeing Pronger win it, less so. Scott Neidermayer has had quite a career; when he was in New Jersey I always saw him in the shadow of his brother-in-Scott, Stevens, who was more notorious because of his headhunting and deathblows. But Niedermayer is ultimately the superior Scott and one of the two best defensemen of the last ten years along with Lidstrom.

This reminds me of that Jamaican bobsledding movie. Who the hell could believe that anyone from somewhere there is no snow/ice could be so good on the snow/ice.

You'd think the Canadien team would own them, but the Senators got schooled.

Bah... Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead are an hour's drive from the Pond (less if you're lucky with traffic).

I'm pretty happy for the Ducks. My first live hockey games were two Duck games from last year - and they're much easier to root for with the "Mighty" gone from their name.

Well, the Ducks did have more Canadian players on their roster than the Sens.

See, I would have gone the other way, and noted that Anaheim, in the last 16 years, has won the same number of Stanley Cups as ALL OF CANADA.

Meanwhile, over the last 16 years, 14 of the playoff MVPs were Canadian.

This might be the dumbest post ever in a sports thread, all the more inexcusable in that the team from your town (hardly a winter paradise) just won the Stanley Cup a couple of years ago. What do you think, they just went to the beach and grabbed some surfer dudes and put them in skates?

As a hockey purist, I hated seeing the Ducks, with their disney pedigree, win the CUP. As a hockey fan, I LOVED watching them get the CUP after the game. No other championship trophy means as much to the players & fans as the CUP does to hockey.

However, nothing will ever top 1994.....

JJD - that's what I was thinking, too, but I was being too polite and I wasn't going to point out what a ridiculous statement that was. It's been mentioned by others that they don't stock the California teams with just California natives, though if they did, CRZ might have made the squad.

Rangers/Devils seems destined to go seven games. I'm picking New Jersey. I'm also picking Phoenix over Los Angeles just so I can take the opposite tack and predict ratings armageddon for NBC and the NHL. Coyotes! Devils! The Cup!
