I hate graduation. I find it quite boring, and the only reason I went to my college graduation was because my mom made me. Having said that, I still think this is a ridiculous ban and an even MORE ridiculous way to enforce it. Ban air horns and other noisemakers, sure, but how on earth are you going to ban people from CHEERING? A "solemn" occasion? Get real. Graduation *is* celebration.
On another note, is it really that big a deal if you don't get the paper diploma? I don't even know where mine is, probably in my parents' closet somewhere. I suppose it could be a bigger deal for someone who doesn't make it past high school though.
Originally posted by CNNSchool officials said they will hear students and parents out if they appeal. Damn, I hope the parents and kids do fight this. That is ridiculous. The kids do nothing and get punished?!

I think it's a huge deal to someone who is just now graduating high school, but probably not to someone who graduated 10-15 years ago.
Before my ceremony 12 years ago, they said that any "unnecessary" cheering from the audience for the grad or anything other than a simple walk across the stage, and the principle will give the student a blank diploma.
She or he would have to come to the principle's office at a later date to get the real one.
When I graduated, the announcer always said "hold your applause until the end of the presentation", so that everyones names could be heard. After each class went up to reach their diplomas, they said "The graduating class of 12E" or whatever our homeroom was, and the cheering began.
The ruling makes sense - it is respectful, but to punish the students? For shame.
I've seen FIVE movies so far this year: Because I Said So - (2*); Borat - (5*); Children Of Men - (4*); The Last Mimsy - (4*); Spiderman 3 - (4.5*)

I dunno. I didn't really care about it at the time (bigger deal for the parents) and I didn't go to my college graduation at all.
I went to my niece's high school graduation today and there was plenty of cheering. It didn't seem to affect the whole affair. Sure, there were a couple of idiots with airhorns, but there were only 160 seniors and each and every one got cheered when their name was called. It was actually held in a nice theater in Portland (even though it's Westbrook High School - alma mater of Scotty Too Hotty!), so it had a little more dignified air about it than had it been in the gymnasium like mine was 29 years ago. Ouch, 29 years ago. I saw some teachers today who I had that are still teaching. I think one's name was Grog the Caveman. (Saving JJD and dunk the obvious joke here.)
Anyway, on topic, I think some cheering is fine and the occasion isn't that solemn.
CRZ had to edit my profile and close my table for me. I am a bad man.
Well if they would have just held their noise till the end of the ceremony like they asked, There would not have been a problem. It is called listening, and it is called respect to others. Is it that hard to follow instructions especially for parents till all names are called?

And exactly HOW many graduations have you been to where this happens? Pieman hit the nail on the head: it's not that solemn of an occasion.

Still, everyone was told the rules beforehand. If you make someone sign a contract and then don't enforce it, you look really weak. And if you sign a contract saying you won't cheer, and that doing so could cause your child to not receive their diploma, and then do it anyway, you're an idiot.

While I personnally don't much care either way, I agree that if you as adults know the rules and choose not to follow them, you are an IDIOT.
What I don't understand is our inability in society to allow for any solemn ceremonies. Why must we act rather boorish at every public event? I don't mean a simple cheer or two or a clap but over the top stupid obnoxious noise. At our local high school it is occasionally so bad it embarasses the graduate.
Originally posted by Mr. BoffoOur class didn't get our real diplomas until after the ceremony. I think it may have been for this reason, though I don't recall them mentioning it.
We got the cases for the diplomas but not the actual ones.
I thought the gist of the story was that the rule was there because one kid would get announced, wild cheering would ensue, and the next kid's name wouldn't be heard. This seems fair to me, and in this case there's no real "punishment" except "here's a blank piece of paper because your family and friends acted like rowdy tools."
I suspect that there was more than the hearing of the names behind the rule, though. This smacks of "everyone cheers the football hero but then the skater-dweeb who never showers is next and no one cheers for HIM, so let's do this so the dweeb won't FEEL BAD."
Holy fuck shit motherfucker shit. Read comics. Fuck shit shit fuck shit I sold out when I did my job. Fuck fuck fuck shit fuck. Sorry had to do it....

They didn't say anything about other people at my graduation, but the principal did threaten during rehearsal to not give a real diploma to a student and to hold off sending transcripts if a graduate acted like an idiot. Screwing with someone's transcripts is what I found distasteful, and found it as a form of karma when the principal had to resign a few years later due to his being a slight bit too familiar with some female students.

However the school is forcing them to do community service to get them. One student made an excellent point - there is NOTHING stopping someone who dislikes them from hooting and hollering out of control.
Punishing the students here is retarded, and if it's REALLY that bad, ask the offending cheering section to leave.

I forgot to add that the biggest reason we needed our applause to be held was that there was almost 600 people graduating that night in my class.
It was a 3.5 hour ceremony and if it went any longer...
At my graduation there was a huge class, probably around the 600 mark. One person did get a standing ovation that held up the entire proceding, but that was because he almost died his sophomore year.
Diplomas are frivolous. Colleges don't need them, jobs don't need them, they're just a decoration. Mine's collecting dust (insert your own joke here).
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.
OK - I have a VERY POOR way of dealing with this situation. It's immature and passive-agressive, but it once worked in the exact same situation. (about 10 years ago, when I was less mature and more passive agressive)
