I never really look at the ratings, but am surprised that the Office is that low. I remember when shows were canceled if they were not in the top 40.

If Studio 60 was #61, why was it canceled? I know the competition on Monday is not as tough as Thursdays, but still...

Because it was billed as this high end, potential top 20 show that cost something like 3 million an episode to produce. And when the ratings tanked, NBC couldn't afford to pick it up for a second season. Also, I do believe that this is showing the season average. Studio 60's ratings started out strong and got progressively worse as the season went on.

EDIT: Man, NCIS is the one top 20 show that nobody talks about or seems to watch. (Except me and AWA.)

68. The Office [8.3m; 28th in 18-49]

It's not the overall rating that matters, it's the 18-49 demographic that advertisers (and therefore networks) care about the most. 28th isn't bad for a show that probably doesn't cost a whole lot to make.

After doing some analysis, here's where each network's line seems to be:
ABC: Unless you're a news magazine, Saturday Nigh Football, or a reality show, you need about an 8.5 rating (2.7 18-34) to stay on. The only exception was "Notes From The Underbelly", which garnered a 5.5 rating in its airing starting in April, and was picked up for a 2nd season. "Men in Trees" was right at the dividing line, with an 8.4 rating, 2.8 among 18-34s. I'm going to guess that ABC had enough dramas, which is why they went with MiT instead of "Six Degrees" or "The Nine", two similarly rated shows.

CBS: On CBS, it seems more important to have a high rating among 18-34 year olds. Everything with a rating above 2.8 among this group returned except for "King Of Queens", "Smith", and "The Class". And for the old people, there's still 60 Minutes and 48 Hours.

The CW: CW's ratings threshold seems to be about a 1.1 in the 18-34 demographic. The only shows below this that were not brought back were shows in at least their 4th seasons, including "Gilmore Girls", "Reba", "7th Heaven", and "Veronica Mars".

Fox: I'm surprised they brought "King of the Hill" back. It's a full 1.6 rating below any other Fox show brought back for 2007. Its 18-34 rating is fair, but "The Winner"'s rating was higher, both among 18-34s and the total population. Other that that, you need to have a 7.0 rating (2.6 18-34) or be a reality show to make it (which include America's Most Wanted, Cops, Trading Spouses, and Nanny 911).

NBC: The dividing line here is once again the 18-34 demographic. A rating over 2.7 means you make it. "The Office" does much better in the 18-34 demographics, garnering a 4.1 (which ranks it 28th). The only shows above 2.7 that weren't renewed were the aforementioned Studio 60, and "The Apprentice", which Donald Trump doesn't want to do anymore. The only shows below 2.7 that made it back are "Friday Night Lights", which someone at NBC must like, and the 8 showings of Dateline NBC that air (ok, maybe it's only 3).

edit: beaten in my explanation about "The Office". oh well.

Boston Legal probably gets by because of how high the ratings are among the richest portion of the audience.

Another thing about "The Office". Look at that list of Top 30 18-34 year olds. Notice how few of those shows are comedies. "The Office" is the 3rd highest real comedy on the list. Only "Two And A Half Men" and "Rules Of Engagement" (which aired immediately after "Two And A Half Men") are more watched comedies. Everything else is game shows, reality tv, dramas, and that strange hybrid, Dramedy (or is Comada?).

Ouch, the CW covered the entire bottom 10 on that list.

Is there a Cable version of this list that ever comes out?

It's kind of funny that for all of the hand-wringing that the critics did over Lost moving to a later timeslot and not 'connecting' with viewers due to the complicated plot, it's still the ninth-highest rated show on TV.

Where's Ugly Betty on the list? I thought it was a big enough hit to crack the top 28

Saw this today and really enjoyed it. Had me thinking throughout the whole movie. Thought John Goodman was great. Quick movie. Less than 1:45 running time. Highly recommended.
